That was freakin' awesome! When people say "this guy gets it" I don't want to hear "every coach makes changes...blah blah blah" as this guy has really gone above-and-beyond, ala Schiano, to get things done (off the field, conditioning, etc. etc.) and done ASAP since he's arrived.

Good to know, however, that he is grounded, has no problem speaking publicly about, and understands that it's not going to be easy on the field this year. Gotta LOVE that in a head coach IMHO.

All around as an athletic department, things are constantly being changed for the good. Awesome time to be a Rutgers fan.

Attention to detail is amazing. Keeps it fun and tracks everything for results!! This guy get's it!!!!

Ash sounds like my Officer Candidate School experience . I can tell you it works.

"If a player is missing class or not performing well academically, his entire unit has to go on what we call, "The Night Shift." That's a study hall on Friday nights from 10 p.m. until midnight. If that doesn't get the message across and players still mess up, we work them out at 5 a.m."

Great read. It's also a wake up call for us. I knew that our facilities were a step behind but he killed them. Granted CA came from OSU where I am sure the facilities are great, but it is shocking that we didn't even have all HD TVs up in the building. And let's just say that CA isn't a fan of the way KF ran things. No surprise there but he wasn't remotely complimentary of anything.

I like this guy. I really hope he can coach.

This was a great read. I love the fact that the players are buying into the new coaching team's philosophy. It really does seem like a completely different team. From their physical builds to mental attitudes, our future looks bright. And I'm loving the fact that recruiting is heavily built around the players talking with recruits. Making things look pretty is one thing, but finding out from a player what it is really like is priceless. Heck, I would like to see the transition photos of some of the players. Maybe that would get me motivated. LOL

Sounds like Kyle really coasted in his duties as head coach. Every indication says more and more says he was never fit for the top job. He was in the right place at the right time and that is the only reason he got the job in the first place. It really does take hard work and dedication to make it on this business, and Ash really tells it like it is.

Great read. Nice to see a good comparison of what we had/have to what we need to compete.

Sounds like an upgrade to the locker room is in the works which is great news. I've heard the current one doesn't even fit all of the current players which is truly mind boggling.

Very positive article. I love the accountability aspect of requiring units to share in the poor or excellent performance of individuals within each group.

Ash seems like a coach and leader that can bring sustained winning back to Rutgers football. Excited to see what happens over the next few years.

Great article. As former military I completely believe in "shared suffering" as a way of building team cohesion. When one messes up, you all messed up. It teaches team members to look out for each other, help each other and hold each other accountable.

If Coach Ash is have the coach he is on game day as he is Sunday-Friday, the future is bright!!!

A player stuffed a bean bag in his pants to weigh more???? I never heard of that before haha. "The coach won't notice this bean bag in my pants"
"Hey are you happy to see me or is that a bean bag in your pants?"

While not totally analogous, this sounds similar to what Schiano did when he first assumed HC duties, i.e. attendance taken at all classes players were taking.

Let the flaming begin.

Maybe it was not him coasting in his duties as much as not having the proper background and no yardstick to measure against? So, your second and third sentences make more sense. As Walter said to Donny, "You are out of your element," which applied to Coach Flood. He gave it his best shot. He did some things well or OK, but to succeed, you have to do everything really well and work very hard.

Which is probably why we dress what seems like the fewest players of any home team I've ever seen at this level. I'm always shocked by that as usually home teams will dress every single kid in the program, if possible, just to look more "intimidating" coming out of the locker room, et al..

Ya' know you were one of the posters who literally destroyed me, for a couple of years, for speaking nothing but the truth about Flood, but NOW you're finally seeing the light and speaking about it left-and-right? SMDH lol...oh well....welcome! [cheers]

Sounds like he's smart enough to listen. That's how you learn. I didn't read the article but Ash is continuing Schiano methods to the next level. Sometimes a new leader has to take over to move the process forward.

This forum hates losing to Penn State at home. Flood never recovered from that loss. That was the game that many felt that Rutgers should have won.

I again think Ash has to beat PSU at home this year. If he doesn't, his stay at Rutgers could be only two years. However, if he beats PSU then he can be here for five years. So it is two or five for Ash.

Here's the way I see it, and you may know this by now about me. Mom always told me that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. I also always look at the bright side of things. Hell, I was diagnosed with cancer and beat it, and I consider THAT a blessing--early detection and outstanding care saved my life, along with a HUGE does of karma and good luck because my cancer was discovered incidentally when I was having another issue.

So, I don't know if I destroyed you, but often wished you and others would just have a little patience, because one way or another, Flood was going to sink or swim in his own floodwaters. I thought 2014 was a small ray of hope showing that if Flood was provided with a budget for solid coordinators like Fridge (needed one on defense), he could have been a decent CEO type of head coach. But that theory was severely dispelled last year when all of the wheels fell off.

Ash has been provided resources and a much more open checkbook than Flood ever had because someone convinced Barchi that the cheapest way to go was first class. That's not saying that Flood could have hoped to do anything close to what Ash is doing right now. Kyle Flood tried his best, but his best was not good enough for a P5 head coaching job. He seemed like a nice guy, and the players loved him-maybe because he was such a nice guy and not a strict disciplinarian.

So, while it may appear I was trashing Flood in my post, I am just recognizing the many shortcomings he had (lack of innate ability, lack of discipline and lack of resources) that prevented him from succeeding. Hindsight is 20/20, and it is easy to go back and say "I was right" or "I was wrong." The "truth" lies somewhere in between. But the important thing, is we got to a better place, and sometimes it takes a little suffering and pain to get to a better place in life. I learned that with my health, and I am a much happier person for it. Damn, I think I am going to cry.[cheers]

I thoroughly enjoyed his time at Ohio State... if you want to see his impact, check our defensive numbers in 2013 vs the defensive numbers in 2014 and 2015... Ash was the only real staffing change we made those years on defense...

Ash gets it.

Love that he envisions a Pete Carroll like program. Kids want to be around a positive environment. You can do that AND work hard and smart.

Ash is just what this program needed. He gets the little things, including the drabness that was the Hale Center. Changing that whole vibe is great.

Schiano used to run what was called the strike system. it ran like the below:
  • 1st strike - Player had a 5 am punishment
  • 2nd strike - Player's position group joined in punishment
  • 3rd strike - Player's unit (offense/defense) joined in punishment
  • 4th strike - whole team punished
  • 5th strike - player dismissed from team
Flood got rid of the strike system and installed "Club Hale" which is identical to the Night Shift in that players had to sit in study hall without a phone from 10-12.

I thought the same thing. Shared suffering was a way of life in the army. I've done many-a-pushup and pulled lots of after hours duty on behalf of my fellow soldiers... as they have for me too. lol

This is not a Schiano thing. It's a big time college football thing.

We are finally being run like a big time program.

Get a grip dude.

Here's the bit people ought to take to heart:

"We've still got a lot of work ahead of us here at Rutgers. But for now, we're ahead of schedule off the field with all the progress we made. We know that once we snap the ball it's not going to be perfect this season. Not a single one of our linebackers has taken a college snap, and the personnel in our offense wasn't recruited for our up-tempo system.

But we're thrilled where we are in terms of our discipline and the structural changes we've made throughout the program. There's a long way to go, but we can see where we're headed. There's a shared vision here of where we're headed, and I can guarantee you everyone sees the future in HD."

There's plenty of reason for hope and the program appears to be moving in the right direction. But people ought to be patient these first couple seasons.

Well, I for one, am GLAD you're not our Athletic Director!!!

Hey, I will gladly eat crow about anything. But I am always willing to give the current head coach the benefit of the doubt. You never really know anything unless you truly are an insider and have seen what goes on. When I heard about the old locker room, I had visions of a doctor's waiting room with MUSAK in the background.
