just got fired by the saints

Would be able to work as both head coach and defense coordinator

Ties with Rex Ryan and family legacy

His defense this season is worse than RU's and you want him to be the coach!!!

Look at his DC record. Ryan was NOT successful with saints, but look how his defenses stacked up through the years. Are you saying its not a big upgrade compared to flood?
Do I know for certain he would be gr8 at recruiting? No. could he be worse?
He's got personality, a good name and good track record in NFL. I think it would go well with HS recruits. I would take his NFL resume and defenses compared to Fleck, Davis, edsall, christobal and rhule.

I don't think we will be in running for Herman, strong or other top flight coaches.

BTW, I would love rich rod for RU hire and a 2nd shot at B1G with NJ talent.

No. Rob Ryan would be better than flood . But so would hell of a lot of other people .

Bob Ryan, the Boston sportswriter, might be as good a candidate, if he's still around.

Man, I don't know what we are, or aren't, going to spend - just have an "idea" based on things I've heard for 2 years now - but, I really hope those here who have been so outspoken, claiming that we "have no money," or "we won't spend money," or "only care about being revenue neutral" - to the point of beating the proverbial "dead horse" - are STFU in the next month, because that will LIKELY be a good thing for all of us. Just hope the same people don't start bitching about the hire, despite the money, to continue on their soap boxes for whatever reason(s).

What's the ideal range for spending money on a new coach? Is competitive with the likes of IU, Cincinnati or is on the Mac level? Maybe we'll be surprised with Rutgers spending closer to UW or Michigan State.

This. Would love to see the big belly and long golden blond hair blowing in the wind on the sidelines. He would at least bring some comic relief to the banks

Doug - I would hope that most here would be happy, and we most definitely CAN hire a proper staff, for about $5-$5.5M/year, total, which is the # that's been "rumored about" since late 2013.

I spoke with someone about a week ago and I said to him that it would take something in the range of $6 million to be competitive. I didn't realize I was close.[thumb2] If Rutgers is smart maybe they can backload contract so by the time it increases the money from the B1G should help to cover it. It's a risk, but trying times call for questionable acts.

This last year's list for HC salaries:

2. Mark Dantonio – $5,636,145
6. Urban Meyer – $4,536,640
8. James Franklin – $4,300,00
9. Kirk Ferentz – $4,075,000
24. Bo Pelini – $3,077,646
30. Brady Hoke – $2,856,000
39. Pat Fitzgerald – $2,480,967
41. Gary Andersen – $2,285,000
45. Jerry Kill – $2,100,000
46. Darrell Hazell – $2,090,000
47. Randy Edsall – $2,033,880

The current salary (based on 2014) for the Rutgers staff is ranked 38th nationally and 8th overall in the B1G. Rutgers didn't have a problem paying the assistants, but the problem was with the leader. The leader of the program is the difference in recruiting, organization in running the program, image, getting the staff to perform well together, etc. The HC has to be a strong type and jack of all trades. So basically Rutgers needs to pay its HC in the range of Hazell, Kill or Andersen (UW 2014) and compensate the OC and DC well too just be in the ballpark for qualified candidates. The position coaches at most FBS schools receiver roughly the same.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the total payout for Rutgers staff in 2015 is around $3.5 million. Flood is $1.2 million. Flood's increase is the difference in the loss of Friedgen ($500K) to McDaniels ($300K). The rest of the staff is the same. Rossi at $300K, Fraser ($300K). Everyone else at least $200K except for Campanile.

$5.5 million total staff is a big difference.

During my lifetime, Michigan had been very cheap when it came to coaching salaries. Texas A & M offered Schembechler the first 1M contract to leave. He didn't, and salaries have continued to skyrocket.

My fellow fans hated the laughing stock that Dave Brandon made of Michigan, but I am thankful he started the process of providing competitive wages with Hoke.

We paid 5M plus a 2M signing bonus for Harbs, which although is below his market value, was all he asked for. He wanted well paid asst coaches. Our O and D co-ordinators are nearly 1M each. Several SEC schools pay up to about twice that. I wouldn't be surprised to see Durkin receive a raise, especially when Mattison retires. Our former DC is still hauling down about 880k yearly himself.

I think the wages in sports are crazy, but you need to pay to play. Sports are a huge contribution getter when the team is winning.
