Football Joe Harasymiak to be UMass next Head Coach

Yes, we have them scheduled just in 2026 as a sacrificial lamb paycheck game on 09/05/2026. No way we'd do a home-and-home with them as there's no benefit for us. Although we are looking for another home game in both 2025 & 2027.
I could see us filling our last spot OOC with UMass in 2025 and 27 now as a result.

Good for him. Getting experience as the Head Coach is critical. HC, at FBS level, involves so much more than football; recruiting, fund raising, handling the press, school politics....... This lets him gain that experience on UMass' dime. Then, when he's seasoned, he just might be looked upon as the heir apparent, here. Maybe/Maybe not. But, I don't think that it is an unreasonable take.

This wasn't unexpected and these kind of changes happen often. Actually, I heard Schiano was anticipating he'd be getting a head coaching opportunity and this was the year he'd want to leave.

Wasn't he the head coach at Maine? This isn't a step back to FCS, but it's certainly not where you'd expect a P2 coordinator to go. Greg's handprints were on the defensive changes after the bye week. Greg is also a prevent-defense guy, I can't imagine he's happy with the defense on the last play versus Illinois. Do we think Joe was forced out? Do we think he was ticked that the HC stepped on his toes after the bye week?

If there is one thing I am not worried about its Schiano bringing in another good DC and keeping that group strong.

The defense took a step back this year
As has been well argued already, not because of poor coaching but because of all the injuries on defense. All teams suffer injuries. But what we experienced this season was pretty unusual.

And Rutgers Football is not now, and is unlikely to ever be, like OSU where the "next man up" is so athletically gifted that he can overcome lack of game reps with physical talent. The fact that the defense improved so much during and after the second bye week shows how quickly the coaches could bring some of the inexperienced players up to speed.

People who think our third and fourth string players should've stepped in with no drop off in performance are smoking crack.

Correct. Because the RU defense had a senior laden group this season and was projecting to be a Top 30 defense .
That did not happen due to injuries , but I’m sure that’s what the thinking was regarding his timing/opportunity to leave.

Make the move a trade.
Harasymiak leaves for the UMass HC position
Rutgers brings in the UMass HC (Brown) Harasymiak replaces as the RU DC.
Don Brown was a great DC for Michigan and Arizona before he became the UMass HC .
His Wolverine D wasn't that hot in 2020 after having 4 great seasons under Brown , but his 2021 Wildcat D was a good one before moving on to the UMass HC position in 2022
He might be a little seasoned (70) but he was considered one of the top DCs before taking the UMass job.

That said, wishing Joe success as the Minutemen HC
Would have loved him 3 years ago.

The other consideration may be that the current football defensive meta is to play multiple coverages out of a cover-2 shell.

Doc's defense nearly the polar opposite with a safety in the box and frequently sending 5 or more.

No one has recommended Chris Partridge? Or stealing someone from the Syracuse staff?

UMASS is refocusing their efforts to football. They’re making a move to the MAC next season. Many good players and coaches have come out of that conference.

Terrible move. I think he could've done a lot better than UMass. The only plus I see there is the school is moving to the MAC, which'll put them on more of an even footing.

Longshots from G-5

Nick Benedetto has run a great D at Northern Illinois for a couple of years

Bill Brechin , Miami of Ohio , is also another mid major DC that deserves to be considered

I would consider bill bellichick (not Steve) or saban if either wanted to get back into coaching as DC.
Spags if he ever wanted to come back to Jersey and he did work with Flaherty before.

Spags the NFL DC going for his 3rd straight Super Bowl and likely HOFer st this point?
Ya we should definitely consider him if he wants.

I mostly agree but the rushing TD given up to the UCLA QB was inexcusable.

Hetherman is only making $850K per year at Minnesota.

On the updated TKR podcast, it was mentioned that getting him will be extremely expensive for RU. According to the signed contract at Minn, if he leaves for a DC position at another B1G school , the entire remaining contract (2 yrs) is the buyout. That’s $1.7 M. Then they would probably have to pay an additional $2M plus for a 2 yr contract as RU DC.

He has one year left on his contract, he signed a two year contract last year

Harasymiak was making $1.25M at Rutgers. Bump Hetherman up to $1.1M and do the buyout.
He is an East Coast guy. Living in the midwest can suck if you are from the East Coast.

Yikes! Seems like desperation going to UMASS. Can’t think of a worse place for football. Hockey or basketball all makes sense. Was his job in jeopardy here?

UMass joining the MAC, promised $2 million for NIL this year & $3 million NIL for next season, $1.3 million salary plus decent money for assistants. Will be able to go in portal & get players who don't start for bigger teams & want to start
