Roster For Next Season

Grant -- Hopefully we can hold on to

Dortch -- No idea. Stays or transfers down?

Lathan -- Feel like we'll see a mutual (to some extent) parting ways. Part of me thinks Pike would rather go back to what he's comfortable with at the 5...a solid defensive minded rim protector. Even if Pike does want him, I think Lathan will get NIL from someone and bounce.

JMike -- For a couple of kids who grew up together, it feels like him and Ace aren't really that close?? I had him penciled in as leaving after this season with Ace, but now I'm not so sure. Also don't think his NIL value is that high. Hopefully he stays, if nothing else for some continuity

Derkack -- Stays as a guy off the bench. Or Pike gets him to stop with the "it's Jordan Derkack time" nonsense.

JWill -- Think he feels at home here and is still loyal to Pike for taking a chance on him.

Ogbole -- Stays. Who is paying a raw guy who can't stay healthy?

So that means what, 2-3 portal additions?

Dortsch can play at this level.

If Jwill stays in school, doubt he'd leave here. Derkack, gotta think he's staying. Grant has ties to Smoke right? Don't see him leaving. Ogbole ain't going anywhere. Lathan - never thought he'd be here more than a year. Jmike - who knows.

I'd prefer these pieces stay. Try to find 2 upperclassmen in the portal who can score, handle the ball, and plays defense. Some wishful thinking on a Center somehow. I wouldn't hate this roster.

Portal C
Upperclassmen Portal combo guard
Upperclassmen Portal combo guard
Jwill
Grant
Dercack
Nuwuil
 Mark
Ogbole
Ware
Dortch
Powers
o Big Ten quality Big.

2 portal scoring high major guards, one that is a point guard, is desperately needed for scoring next year. And a rim protector 5 man, but we saw how that went this past offseason season
And after this year exactly why would two high major guards come here?

Lathan has showed offensive skills especially for a freshman big man so he will have interest in the portal if he wants to leave. Big men are getting over paid all over the place

It's impossible to know. Anyone could potentially leave even those you don't think would. We bring in one transfer and someone you thought was staying feels threatened and leaves etc etc

He’s not a serviceable Big10 starting center and never will be. He’s a Merrimack-level center. Hopefully Derkack will transfer back and take Lathan with him.

Too slow and plays small.

Fine as a backup but it’s doubtful he wants that role, and that’s not where NIL should be spent anyway
He is the best offensive center we have had in a long time
I.would hope he can get better on defense since defense is a learned skill

Sommerville would be the least of Rutgers problems next season. The team is averaging 76 points a game with Bailey and Harper.Next season Rutgers will be lucky to average 65 points and better coaching clearly is needed on defense.

It will be hard for us to recruit guys with proven high major experience because we won't have the $$ of other programs. We need to find guys that have a connection here, or have better luck finding the right guys moving up from smaller level schools.

I don't believe Cam was considered a high major level guard when Rutgers got him.
Maybe you do not understand how the portal works and is successful for some teams. Lower level or mid major players that can play are recruited up to high major teams. Williard stepped in shit and got 3 mid Major players that came up to high major and are excellent 2 way guards that can shoot and score and play defense. Cam was from Loyola Maryland , a low mid major, but he could shoot and made the jump to high major at Rutgers and UConn. Pike has to find these diamonds in the rough

I feel like if we’re going to ride with Sommerville we’re going to need another big next to him because he can’t protect the paint and this defense needs someone that can.
lately, we’ve always needed another big, and Pike fails every time…unless you count “man amongst boys” Ralph Agee.

By high major do we mean a guard from a high major or just a high major level guard? If the latter then Cam was pretty good.

Whereas we disagree that the advanced metrics ought to be the gospel of team assessments - I’m all in on this focus for individual player recruits from the portal. Cam’s advanced numbers shouted “winner” clear as day. PJ and Acuff’s numbers shouted “red flag” which turned out to be spot on. I’m hoping the data itself plays a role in our strategy for next season with a lean on the defensive side because that’s where Pike’s strength lies. He has proven his teams can create offense from D when his D is elite provided he doesn’t only have teeny tiny guards who cannot finish in transition without even being contested.

This thread is showing how many people are starting to realize what I realized the day we lost to Princeton.

Pike is absolutely screwed and not recovering from this season. Roster is terrible next year with hardly any NIL to improve it, coming off one of the most embarrassing seasons in NCAA history. He would need to blow up this roster (again) with all the negativity from this year and no money to player shop.

He is likely down to 13 months left here. Accept it and it will be less painful.

Our team just isn’t that good. The bold is a really bad exaggeration that needs to stop being spread.

Pikiell failed to assemble a good team this year and yes that was a massive failure and missed opportunity. I am not defending how he screwed the pooch here.

But in no way has this been close to the most embarrassing season in NCAA history considering:

- The flawed personnel and makeup of this team (either not good, or extremely young)
- Dylan and Ace are only 18 years old and are being drafted on potential (they are not currently top 5 players in college bball)
- Dylan was out, or a shell of himself, for 5-6 weeks

Lets not get carried away Skoolie.

Its hyperbole but we will be the butt of jokes for 15 years if Ace and Dylan have good careers.

It is a catastrophically huge fumble for Rutgers. The school marketing department was getting prepared for us to be in the national championship to capture alum interest/donations etc and we are in a death struggle to get into the BTT where we go 1-1 at best.

1) Butt of jokes - not really. Nobody will remember or care other than the trolls who already love to make fun of Rutgers (i.e. Seton Hall, Cuse, UConn dorks).

Also Dylan and Ace aren’t even close to their ceiling yet (especially Ace). They re going to be on campus for about a total of 8 months. It’s not like they were here for 2-3 years and we failed miserably over multiple seasons as they matured and rose to their ceilings.

2) RU Marketing - Rutgers operations tend to be Mickey Mouse operations. Not surprised Marketing was preparing for these unrealistic expectations - that’s just dumb behavior…we were wayyy closer to a bubble team than a national championship contender coming into this season.

I agree this season was a massive fumble and missed opportunity but the big misses really happened prior to the season ever started by assembling a team of misfits who across the board don’t have strengths that align with our coaches strengths or balance out where our biggest needs were to compliment Dylan and Ace (defense, rebounding, veteran leadership)….and we had some unlucky events with Acuff, Ace and Dylan injuries.

The massive fumble was a coach who has built a program on defense and toughness bringing in 2 one and done players.

What about thinking JWill, Davis and Derkack could provide adequate defense and toughness (to say nothing of offense) next to Ace/Dylan?

At least Ace and Dylan are providing the offense as was expected of them.

JWill, Davis and Derkack had one job

No debate

Want to stay: grant, lathan
Ok to stay: derkack, dortsch
Please go: Davis, J Williams

Not impressed by incoming class…

Regardless of whether Lathan stays, you need another big next to him. For defense, & putbacks. Someone closer to 7’0”
Grant will stay and be a star. Would be ironic if he was the Dylan whose Jersey was on the rafters someday..
Dorch can be developed into defensive specialist..
Curious about the freshman coming in. One was compared to JY..
Besides a Big, Need an experienced Portal Player or two, a Mulcahy type -

You are turning into Baghdad Bob playing down what a massive failure this is.

Dude I said it was a massive failure lol. I’m not sugar coating that or absolving Pikiell for blowing the opportunity we had.

But in no way was this season one of the most embarrassing seasons in NCAA history (your original statement).

That’s just a complete over exaggeration of the failed season when you consider the makeup of the roster (very young or not good) and how most of the failure was actually in the offseason constructing the roster.

This team was always way more close to a bubble team than a Final Four team. We’re not gonna make the tournament which is obviously a failure but it’s not one of the worst seasons in NCAA history lol.

That means if we had 4 more wins we would suddenly go from worst in NCAA history to about where we were projected…

And like I said nobody will give a $hit about the 8 months that Dylan and Ace spent here at Rutgers as 18 year olds in the next 5, 10, 15 years except people on this board who have OCD and can’t move on from things or trolls that have and will always crap on Rutgers.
