Sorry if this was talked about in one of the other long threads…

On the play with long pass to duff / the roughing the passer, it seemed like duff ended up catching the ball even with a flag being thrown (maybe for def PI?) and that it seemed to get declined and ball just placed where duff caught it…then refs meet and the roughing the passer play sticks and rutgers gets 15 yards but way less than the catch.

Can someone fill me in maybe if they said on tv—-what happened there? Did the roughing supercede everything else? Did they rule duff didn’t actually catch the ball?
Did something else happen?

He dropped the ball going to the ground.

On TV Refs called 2 penalties on the play, both against Illinois - PI and roughing the passer. The announcers were confused by the ball being brought back to mid-field as they thought it was originally a catch. TV then showed a replay of Duff and per above he dropped the ball going to the ground. Not sure if a Review was done or one of the Refs in position had already called an incomplete pass as the TV coverage didn't reference play being reviewed. Also Rutgers players may have been confused from their POV thus going to the area that they thought Duff made the catch.

Gotta catch that ball. It was a back breaker for RU.

Basically would have had RU in 4 down territory to get the next 1st down.

Duff had his hands on 2 others that he didn't bring in. Well defended but the ball was where it needed to be both times.

Yea that play happened directly in front of me. The side judge had an awful day. He missed many pass interference calls on Illinois. And called the play a catch. Even up to the referee meeting where he was pulled aside by one of the other referees to watch rhe replay on the big screen.

True freshmen Duff missed a couple but his were like you said either defended well or a little off target. I lost count how many easy opportunities senior Miller dropped today. Kid had a really bad day.

So sounds like the review was done by refs watching the big screen via a meeting instead of an official play under review. Easy enough call to rule it an incompletion and the process you described to determine an incompletion obviously could not be known to the folks that watched the game on TV.

In addition this happened during a stretch of play where the Refs audio was not working.

I'd like to see the Miller drops. I think all were well defended and broken up.

On the almost interception over the middle, it was well behind Miller. He had no chance of catching that one. I wonder if he was supposed to sit or if the throw was just off.

Of the non-catches (I won't call them drops without slow-mo review), the 3 best chances at a catch belonged to Duff imo (1 definitely being a drop).

No.. Miller had some real drops... more drops than PDs and passes behind him.

besides.. sometimes passes behind a player are the players NOT sitting down in a hole in the coverage when he should. Of course, I don't know which passes mean what.. but it is clear that, sometimes, we have receivers and QB not making the same read. Our coaches would know.
