RU up 64-31 at the half

🤣 are we even gonna have Gavin for a 2nd yr? He looks noticeably better than everyone else
I would think so. Our two most talented players are Simpson and him. Can't wait to see them starting alongside Dylan and Ace. Question is who will play the five? Do we go positionless with Mag? Will Ogbole or sommerville (sp?) be ready? Does Cliff possibly play another year, or do we get a transfer five? Exciting times on the banks.

I said player, not great athlete who can rebound and block shots.

Ogbole has the size and wingspan to terrorize opponents defensively once he learns the defensive system. I'm very high on him. I expect all 3 (Ogbole, Sommerville, Wolf) to play good minutes in 24

I’m sorry for how disappointed you’re going to feel when you come to understand the reality
I've read your posts. You're clearly no genius. Cliff is very good a what he offers - rebounding, blocking shots, .and finishing alley-oops. He also recovers real well on the pick n roll, and is a very important asset to the team and we can't win without him. That said, he's weak at defending the opposition's post player, he's weak offensively on the post, he can't handle, and he's not much of a passer or shooter. Huge contributor - yes. Great player - eh.

I agree with you that Cliff has his flaws, but Simpson, who can’t handle and shot 37% from the field, 21% from 3 and even lower in BIG play, did not play one minute of winning basketball last year. I expect he will improve some this year, but he is no where near an elite player, and quite honestly on a loaded top 15 team he wouldn’t even get off the bench.

Absurd. Simpson was a freshman and would certainly come off the bench for many top 15 teams. And Simpson "did not play one minute of winning basketball last year.?" Were you out of the country for the home game vs Indiana or the late season win vs. PSU? Maybe the wackiest statement I've ever read here.

Let me explain this in a very clear way that anyone should be able to understand. Basketball is a very simple game where the winner is determined by 4 things, and only 4 things: effective field goal percentage, free throw margin, rebounding margin, and turnover margin. Derek Simpson has an awful effective field goal percentage, doesn’t contribute rebounding, and turns the ball over if he is asked to be the primary ball handler. If all our players had similar stats to Derek last year, we would have been lucky to win 5 games. I certainly expect we will see him improve this year, but he has a long way to go to be an effective basketball player.

Stop. He didn’t mean it the way your putting it. The point is that Simpson got hot off the bench in one game against Indiana and became the go to option on a desperate team that lacked playmakers which been designed to win through defense until Mag went down. We all hope he improves a ton but would you not sign on the dotted line for him to have a sophomore season like Geo’s with less PT than 34 minutes per game? I think everyone would and that was not an NCAA team. So Milo’s point stands. Assuming Simpson is going to stand out as a star and one of our best players is very premature. He’d have to greatly exceed expectations to do that.

Man are you going to be disappointed this season.

Hold the presses and wake up John Wooden — we’ve got the formula for winning here folks and it’s gonna bring us to the promised land!!

Those 4 parameters are correlated with winning teams over the course of a full season. Smoothed out over a full season. They aren’t an effective strategy to pursue going into an individual game and they certainly aren’t predictive of a win in a single game.

Doubt the veracity of that? Look at Rutgers vs Houston from 2021. Rutgers won all FG percentage, ft margin, pushed on TOs and lost the rebounding measure and still lost. To reduce the game to those 4 parameters just doesn’t give you a reliable predictor; it’s an accumulative stat that will explain things after the fact…

…Individual games are governed by a litany of things… including other parameters like three point percentage, offensive rebounds, and points off turnovers. It’s also clutch plays at crunch time and a willingness to hold the ball and make the play. Simpson, at his best, embraces that challenge and goes for it. He’s a terrific player and this year it’ll be irrefutable

I like Simpson as a player, and I'm excited to see how much improvement he can show this year. But some people seem to expect him to be an entirely different player than he's put on tape and box scores to date.

This. It seems we have a decent sized group of fans who believe that Simpson is already an elite player. I think it’s great to support the guys, but pump the brakes. It also puts the rest of us in the weird position of pointing out his flaws when really we’re just saying that he’s a developing player, who showed some good signs in a small sample size, but needs to clean up his game.

I think a large segment of basketball fans confuse elite athleticism with being a great basketball player. We saw it here with Young and now Simpson. Both are amazing athletes, but have many flaws as a player. On a professional level, you see it with Kyrie fans. He's not as good a player as he is an athlete, yet many fans constantly overrate him.

Totally agree here, but you're probably defining Cliff more than anyone else on the team.

He said Simpson didn't play one minute of meaningful basketball last year and you say he didn't mean it that way. OK, sounds like fans of another prominent figure.

See his response. He was saying that Simpson has not yet shown himself to be a major contributor on a winning team. We were not a winning team when he started getting more PT.

???? Lol Kyrie is overrated because hes athletic? Now Simpson is an elite athlete? Kyrie is consistently 50, 40 90 player and the most skilled pg ever. That's why people rate him the way they rate him...Simpson best attribute currently is his spreed with the ball in his hands. Not sure how Kyrie compares to Simpson but i would love for Simpson to play like Kyrie this year..lol

Kyrie is not a winning basketball player. Look at his record with every single team before and after he gets there. He's flashy and athletic, but he doesn't win.
