RU v Iowa 1/4/16 Game Thread

Some wanna know what a ponytail is. I wanna know what a asshat is. And is this a violation of rules calling someone an asshat?
Wow. You do have enough time now. Hope you can come to the Wisconsin game on Thursday.

Pritz, the problem is Stringer doesn't know how to counter zone defenses. You would think because she is such a genius at defense, she would know how to combat it on offense. She doesn't. If she doesn't have shooters, the team fails. There is no distribution to the high and low post enough. There is very little penetrating and when there is and our post players kick it out, they can't finish. This has been an ongoing problem ever since the beginning Stringer came to Rutgers.
The talent has declined since the Final Four team. What remains is a program that will be a middle of the pack B1G team with 5-8 league losses and will probably get a 9-10 seed for the NCAA.

bingo and that's all what some of us are saying here. We have declined to the point where we eroded the fanbase and are just a NCAA bubble type program that will not be top 4 in league or be relevant with national programs. It sad that we had this slide but its been going on since our last great year in 2008. Why people are getting called out for expressing their feelings in bizarre

I do think the talent on this team of Cooper and Scaife are among the best tandem in the country. Problem is that they dont have the supporting cast around them and basically have to do all the work themselves. If Hollivay can give what she gave the last two games, the team has a shot a knocking off some quality opponents BUT they will need another player to step up consistently..I just dont see one though. I am worried about next year.

Its only my opinion, but others agree that the decline started with the various disfunctions of that fab five class that, well, wasn't. Once we dropped from "near the top", we lost a valuable recruiting edge, and the quality of our recruits (top to bottom), while still better than many programs, hasn't been what it once was. (Plus bad luck, for example Canty's extensive health issues). With that has come a tendency to be unable to pull many upsets. We still beat most of the teams that we realistically ought to, but a lot of programs with which we are "on a par" (and so I consider Iowa) become toss-ups and we don't always win.

I'm not quite so doom and gloom as to think Rutgers has fallen as far as the poster you responded to said, and really I think the team is really close to being top 25.

What is so frustrating about this team is that they no doubt have the talent and its problems would be so easy to fix, but I have zero confidence in the coach to change things up, fix these problems, and get the best out of the players.
In my opinion, the easiest way to jump start this team would be to put Canty on the opponent's best player and LEAVE her there. No switching, no zone, none of that overcomplicated garbage. If you haven't noticed, no one can get by her. Her size, speed, and athleticism make her an elite defender, and she has proven that. Yet I saw her numerous times in the Iowa game chasing down Iowa's 5-foot nothing point guard. A total waste. Having Canty on the opponent's best player will likely have some additional effects. It will get Canty more engaged and aggressive on the offensive end, and less apt to sit back and run Coach Stringer's unwatchable "offense". That is something that this team sorely needs.

there are two things that generally have hurt this program the last few years...turnovers and fouling. They seem to be cutting down on the turnovers somewhat of late or at least it seems that way but the fouling is a major problem. That 3rd quarter was just atrocious display of bball iq. You cant just bump into and continually make contact with the other player while you try to steal the ball. The 55 is an excellent tool at times but other times they just get overly aggressive

I have not seen this team play that much and while I believe there is a certain amount of talent I don't think there is nearly enough depth for them to be a top 4 team in this conference. Copper is a tremendous athlete and skilled player but as I watched her take the ball to the basket last night I thought she made some shot attempts more difficult than they needed to be. Sometimes being such a good athlete gives you the sense that you can make shots with a high degree of difficulty when if she would just attack the basket she would have either made the shot or drawn a foul.

With regard to the concern about posters only showing up to be critical, did it ever occur to some that perhaps because the game was easy to watch on BTN that more people either planned to watch or like me just stumbled onto the game and stuck with it? I would like to think many here are general RU fans and want all of our programs to succeed. I think there is a legitimate question about whether CVS is past her heyday and the likelihood of her being able to bring in talent to make another run is probably not high. She should be able to get to the tournament with this team and if she does not it will be disappointing. I bet she can take the criticism a lot better than some of her diehard supporters here. To put this in perspective, Tom Coughlin won two Super Bowls and yet is out of job. Its the world we live in today.

dmd78, I do know better. I apologize for my remarks and it was a moment where I saw the usual suspects come on. But that is no excuse for name calling, I do apologize and it will not happen again.

It looks like the Big Ten will get 6 teams in the dance. The issue is that 8 or 9 teams could be in that top 6. It does make for an interesting conference season. We only see Iowa once. I personally think that right now RU matches up well with Nebraska and has a lot more experience than Penn State. The first game against Nebraska is a must win. We must beat Illinois twice, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Indiana- all are capable of the upset. Minnesota away should be a win but its a revenge game for them. We are very capable of beating Michigan State at home, and Northwestern if we play good defense. Maryland is also vulnerable. That's the upset I want. I don't think RU has a prayer against Ohio State (twice) unless Mitchell takes 40 shots and misses 35. I see 6 more losses, 11-7 and a dance bid if we stay healthy. Assuming we lose one or two we should win. I forgot Purdue- a very tough road game and probable loss.
