ru v iowa commentary

Yeah, Smith isn't wrestling with confidence. It appears that he's just going thru the motions. Not sure he even has a chance at becoming an AA now. So disappointed!

That was humbling. No bonus points from our AAs against lesser competition and most of our guys being absolutely crushed in the last period were the two biggest disappointments.

Hey guys...looks bad on the other side of this but I feel Rutgers is taking a step up. Our guys came out hungry tonight. Still, it's just one dual. Good luck the rest of the way!

'The Iowa Way ". They push, dominate and get physical. At their home arena, they are even more confident. I wasn't able to watch as i was at a business dinner, but was able to follow on RU Wrestling twitter. I wasn't surprised by anything. Not from no bonus points from AA or AP nor Smith losing. Carver is a damn tough place to wrestle well for the away team, and our team although improved, is still far away from Iowa, as is the everbody else besides Penn St and Nebraska, and maybe Ok St and NC St. RU's ranking will drop by 5-8 spots this week ,if Nebraska is a similiar result.

I don't like his antics on the mat at times but the interview was brutally honest.

His antic is his wins at all costs mentality. Love his view on psychological warfare bc thats what it will take to separate good from best. We need some of that killer instinct on this team. We broke too many times in the 3rd period.

Thought we wrestled better than last year overall. To me, biggest disappointments were Dippery and Smith. Dip was a top 10 recruit out of HS in his weight and just is not showing anything. I would really consider taking Theo of RS or maybe Van Brill could get to 49 and challenge him. No fire by him at all. And Smith has regressed awfully. No way he should have lost to Stoll. He needs to finish his shots and pt on more effort. Looks burnt out and in some ways, like he really has given up. He will not AA. Best chances for AA remain Ash and Perrotti with outside shot from Giraldo Giraldo and Gravina were tough in their matches but could not finish them off in last minute or so. Lewis did not seem himself 2nite.

If Gravina can stay healthy he could be very good by his Sr year. He has great skill for an Upper Weight and is good on top. He needs to get stronger. Reminds me some of Rinaldi.

Could not agree more, love what I see in Gravina. Going to be fun to watch and will be here to work with Donner, Grello and others.

I'm surprised more people don't have a problem with the officiating.

I had a major problem with the officiating throughout the match. From where I was sitting we got every questionable stall called against us, never got a stalemate when the Iowa wrestler was in better position, and got called on lightning quick back points and takedowns. We seemed to need a 1 count for a takedown.

I get that you aren't going to go into Iowa and get calls, but I thought this went beyond the realm of what should be expected. It felt like straight home cooking at times. Our wrestlers obviously didn't help the situation, gassing out in most matches, but still.

I really cant blame much on the refs. Performance in most areas was so par at best. Gravina has the right mentality to attack and that cant be taught. That will start to pay off soon. Maybe im being crazy but I think Lewis wins that match if it is wrestled anywhere else. Dippery is a big let down. he looks small for that weight and is going to have a very rough year. Soufoun from Neb will rip him just as bad. He is a hammer. Giraldo was in his match until the 3RD period. I don't want to say much about Smith because this is the same type of match we have seen from him against every tough Heavy he wrestles. Why would we think he will change now with a month and a half left in his career. I see Nebraska going 2 ways. We could come out fired up and make it respectable or let the emotions take over and get blown out. I wouldn't be surprised either way. I have a lot of faith in this team to be mid level B1G team....Michigan should be our bench mark. Very excited for Sat. Lets see what happens.
P.S Gillman interview pissed me off! I love his honesty but because it was about us it killed me to here it. I would totally support our guys thinking like that.

Tough match, but that happens when Iowa gets on a roll at home, they feed off the fans and get going.
Dippery-think some are being a little harsh with him. Sorenson is ranked #2 for a reason, he beat Theo 18-5 last year at the Rac. Yea I did not like the way Sorenson scored about 4-5 takedowns in the last 45 seconds, but sometimes you are over matched. Same with McCabe, he has looked tuff this season, but just was outclassed.

Lips, I completely agree. If Smith had a better coach he would have been an AA by now. Same thing happened with Russo. Will it happen again with Correnti or will we make a change before it happens? There's a track record here so let's acknowledge it and correct it.

It will be interested to see how Nebraska handles back to back weigh-ins. They are wrestling Maryland tonight and will have to turn around and weigh-in at noon against us. Will they not wrestle all their starters against Maryland thinking if they hold 2-3 out they can still win at Maryland? Making weight two consecutive days without a weight allowance can't be fun.

It's time to get a better upper weight coach. Every year is the same thing.

I doubt Goodall will fire Leo. But I'm not sure if this problem with Smith is about coaching - maybe he's good enough to be top 20, but not top 10. We've seen many pictures of "Your best isn't good enough" and I feel like that with Smith. Don't get me wrong - top 20 in the country is awesome.

I hear ya Bill but he must have had that feeling his last 3 years. I can think of about 8-10 big matches where he didn't show up. I know he is a great kid and all that im just giving my opinion. Having a top 20 Heavy is great we just cant expect much more.

Seriously. That interview made me furious.

As far as Iowa's crowd, was anyone else surprised? I thought they fill it for every match but it looked downright empty from what you could see on TV. The RAC will be more full than that on Saturday.

hard not to be impressed by iowa after that. the arena, the homer stall calls, the conditioning, they are the real deal. no injuries so no downside in wrestling the best. the kids will learn from this and get better. was impressed by the upperweights. giraldo also needs matches to end after 1 minute.

eitherway, i wouldnt get discouraged. iowa doesnt have a lot of home matches this year and they wanted to make a statement. they came after rutgers with everything they had. time to rest up, make weight again and put on a show against Nebraska at home.

Big Ten wrestling at its finest.

Ole Cabbagehead-the attendance last night was 6,791. I would say that is very strong, considering a Thursday night, 7 pm local start time. And a lot of their fans have to drive a pretty good distance to get there. I would not wager that RU will have more fans for their Saturday match than Iowa last night.

Seriously? That's insane. They must have a yankees/devils thing going where the lower seats don't fill in. Just watching on TV, I couldn't believe how many seats were empty in the lower level near the mat.

Taken from another poster on the TheMat.com, coach Goodale sums up my thoughts perfectly.

“I just thought we got bullied all over the mat,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “We got pushed all over the mat. We didn’t compete at certain spots and gave up easy takedowns, and then they got the crowd into it and the coaches into it. It just snowballed and we never recovered."

“You’ve got to put it behind you,” Goodale said. “That wasn’t a good effort. Our fans don’t deserve that effort, we have to be better. We have to wrestle a lot harder. We’re wrestling the best teams in the country, we have to wrestle harder and we have to compete harder.”

Thurs night match plus Iowa/Iowa State playing basketball (big deal in Iowa) = the 5,000 plus attendence.

Let me respond about the 285 history. First of all, I was at all of Russo's NCAAs and he told me personally in a long talk that he did not AA because his nerves got to him! That is a quote. It was not coaching or lack thereof.
Regarding Billy, he has a 2 time D2 Champion in Haddad to work with so coaching or a high quality workout partner is not lacking. Billy is practice teaching in the Frsnklin school system so practice time is limited. He clearly is a top 15 kid but may not be a top 8 which you need

there are innumerable factors that go into any one match. credit to Stoll, who was a blue chip recruit (#14 over all according to D1CW) and knows how to wrestle. this match is a learning experience and Smith (and the rest of the team) has plenty of time to kick things in to high gear by March.

There would have been a better crowd if we were wrestling someone that was legitimate.

In my opinion, losing to one of the best teams in the country isn't a season ender or a reason to get down on Rutgers wrestling! Its just a wake up call, and a time to set more goals. I'm sure every RU fan would have liked to see a better showing from every scarlet knight, with the exception of maybe Gravina. The losses were bad and the wins were avg., RU looked like a different team then they have all yr! Having said that, I don't think its possible to find a tougher place to wrestle as an opponent in this country, and I'm sure it was a new experience for every Rutgers wrestler! My problem wasn't with losing matches, but with guys being broken mentally! The guys weren't ready to go to war last night, and I think at this level mental preparation is as important or more important than physical preparation!! Have to take your hat off to Iowa, they are always mentally in every match(usually too much). To this point of the season RU is probably exceeding most fans expectations, so stay positive! LET'S GO RU WRESTLING

Rutgers is legit to fans in the know...I was worried that they were going to take four matches from us at 57 and HWY. No point in coming over here and rubbing it in bro. They continue, maybe all of that homegrown talent plus some poached from PA and NY will come there.

I responded to the thread about attendance did you bother to look at that?

We were ranked #9 in the country and if there were no upsets in the match it would've been 4-6. So if that's the case, I guess the "most rabid fan base in the country" only gets excited for about 1 or 2 matches per year.

Anyway, I wasn't even trig to insult Iowa, I was just commenting on how the parts you could see looked on TV...which was at least half empty. Which surprised me. If you didn't see that on BTN, I'm not sure what you were watching.
