RU vs. Drake

RU 20 DU 6 end of 1st.

Guessing Drake is undersized as RU has five blocks in 10 minutes.

Amazing start 50% shooting in 1Q, got up to 62% with 60% (3 of 5) 3-pt shots made.

Then a flurry of RU turnovers and made lay-ups by Drake. They closed to within six, I think.

RU seems to have it together again, up 39-28 under two minutes in 2Q.

At the half--

RU 44 DU 29, Carey leads scoring with 12 (don´t want to jinx her so not giving shooting percentage, but bugeyes, seriously). Guirantes has 9. RU got a little foul-happy in second quarter, ended half with six. All 12 players have played, and nine have scored. 3-pt shooting dropped off to 4-10 for first half after 3-5 for first quarter (I think).

Really like the stat page for this tournament.

Bad start to the second half. Did not score until 6:46, and DU made a few shots.

RU 47 DU 38 with 5:56 left in 3Q.

Wondering if players on both teams stuffed themselves with big meal at half time. Lots of misses with both teams going about three minutes without a bucket.

Added: RU 1-7, DU 1-7

Ugh. RU 3-12 in 3Q with TO up to 14 (seven in 3Q).

Drake has closed to within three points:

RU 51 and DU 48 after 3Q.

Let´s go RU, right the ship!

Carey seemed to disappear in 3Q. Very active early in 4Q. Unfortunately, now a 2-pt game:

RU 54 DU 52

Drake takes its first lead of the game:

DU 55 RU 54 with 6:56 to go.

Come on, RU!

Drake hitting 3-pt shots now, RU missing nearly everything, including some FTs. RU is in the bonus.

DU 58 RU 55 4:30 to play.

No Twitter updates probably a bad sign. IMO, an awful loss here wipes
Out the 3 cream puff wins.

Well, horrible fourth quarter. First loss of season.

DU 69 RU 59

Rutgers shot 2-11 in 4Q. Wonder if players let up on defense? Ended with seven blocks, five in 1Q. DU had more rebounds in second half. Group freak-out when shots stopped falling? Final FG% 41 3FG% 25. RU not adjusting approach? Huge collapse. Hope someone who was there in person can give a perspective.

We were not the big favorite everyone seems to be indicating. Drake is the highest ranked mid-major and had a higher RPI than we did. That said it’s tough to lose a 15 point halftime lead. This is a very tough tournament with several top ranked teams. Hopefully the addition of Calhoun (first playing time) and Zippy who played only in the opener will provide the depth we need when the conference schedule starts. Remember it’s not how the season starts but rather how it finishes.

Still, any way you cut it this was a bad loss. Period.

Here we go. Any of you calling for Vivs head? Take it easy. Next year is when we make the real move.

not happy with the loss, but season is still young and expect by the end of it > the NCAA will be obtained.

wow excuses....and this loss just like all the other ones we have seen from CVS against just okay competition in the last few years...get a lead and then totally collapse..Its not tough to lose a game like this because you and I have seen it happen time and time again

and so it begins.
As I said the season is young and despite a terrible half against Drake, no reason to think this team won't prove to be a good one by the end of season.
But I fear some Stringer detractors will look for any and every way to put her down .
When things go good, they praise occasionally.
But let something bad happen and like magic: they become regular contributors.

Nothing wrong about pointing out faults, but would be nice to see credit when credit is due handed out as freely as the knocks when deserved are.

Expect there will be those who don't like my constructive criticism.
Tough toenails I say to that. [roll]

15 points in the second half...same old...40-15 outscored..that is just bad basketball
I saw the box score by quarters when I looked up the result and I almost threw up. I would like to know from someone what happened.

I really mean what I said - what happened??????

To the over-all point - I'll start dumping on CVS if and only if this pattern plays out again throughout this year. It is a completely different team from last year, if these type of games continue then there is a problem. For now - who knows. Calhoun shot awfully, if I read correctly. Hopefully that will change.

And as to the loss itself - in the abstract it is a mild upset. They really are ranked as the top mid-major. An upset yes, but not a loss to a cream-puff.

Based on CVS’s interview, it sounds like the Vancouver Showcase is merely an exercise to get players into the game after sitting through preseason practice and the early games. Sounds like low expectations? Tired of hearing “we have no point guard”. What if your point guard gets injured — need a backup strategy. Seems like a lot of excuses from Day 1?

that kind of thinking will have them looking on the outside of the NCAA tourney, you have to win games and beat qualities teams, you cannot just use a bunch of games as practices

I dont understand that they are tired...its like the 4th or 5th game of the season??????? how can everyone be tired..is Drake not tired too? If it was game 3 of this tourney on consecutive days, yeah maybe you can use that excuse, but game 1....good lord what are we expecting vs Gonzaga today

The "We have no point guard" is a fact at this point in the season, not an excuse. We will have two experienced point guards when KK and CC are back. Let's see how we fare then. We would have had 3 if Kate Hill hadn't transferred. I did not see the game, so I can't comment on what exactly went wrong in the second half, but Jenkins not scoring is puzzling to me. She has played well in every other game. Victoria, on the other hand, keeps getting into foul trouble. That really hurts us. Does anyone know why a technical foul was called on the team?

Rutgers has a 15 point lead at half time and then Drake plays zone defense in the second half which resulted in a complete change.Drake made 3 pointers and Rutgers shot bricks and loses by 10 points. This was a very bad loss because Rutgers had control of the game and then gave it away with a abysmal second half. The most disappointing aspect was that there wasn't one Rutgers player that had a pulse on offense.

No need to panic after one game but this is a scenario we have seen time and time again. When we need to create offense we can’t. Will this problem plague the team all season? Only time will tell. History is not on our side.
