Rutgers vs Virginia Tech match...

Scraped by a freshman that we let get out of NJ
Doesn’t matter Mullen is a freshman, he beat out a solid upperclassmen, 5th year?, Catka, to win the starting spot.. Mullen is no joke

This win is a little sweeter bc Mullen was down to either us or VT and he decided to go to VT in the end..

Turley and Poz really shit the bed with their performances.Poz in his defense, has no right being a 197lber.Just no strong enough.Turley is just a disaster. He is like an old thoroughbred.Great out of the gate but horrible at finishing. Thought Oliveri wrestled tough and just needs that signature win.He is gonna get it.Just don't know when. 157 and 165 are going to be very good in the future. They are true freshman. They will get better. SCW looks great.A little more strength and mat time and he could be a potential AA down the road.

Always vague predictions or plays both sides. Never brings up the times he’s wrong. Will always bring up vague comments about how “Rutgers will have a WTF moment.” Like no kidding they’re a middle ranked college team.
Okay, ass-wipe, here you go. I was wrong. I picked from the heart. But I was right about the worst case: just three wins.

26-11 loss. I think I predicted 24-9 loss. earlier in the thread after the starting lineups were announced. I assumed wins for Shawver, Poz, and Yara. I should have given Shawver bonus and given more bonus to VT.

Guys wrestled hard. Shawver, Olivieri, Cetta, Harer, Barbosa, SCW, Poz, and Yara. Smith gave it a go and was given an extremely difficult task. Turley continues to surprise on the downside.

As noted multiple times on the thread, the differences in the physiques of the two teams is stark. The VT guys all look like football players. The RU guys all look like CrossFit participants. WTF?

Yes, if this isn't their best year. Bad decision to force Poz to 197. Olivieri won't win a lot unless he generates offense. I still think Soldano should have been given the chance, but I suspect he now needs to win back the spot. I've always thought Turley was capable of better.

Does anyone know why Peterson didn't weigh in? I think highly of Smith, but he's too small now to be up against the better wrestlers. I'm glad he didn't get hurt.

I was writing my quick summary post when your's went up Crackers. Agree on all your points.

On Peterson, I posted earlier that he might be in concussion protocol and somebody else posted that it may be a weight cut issue. IMO Peterson is small. If the cut to 125 is too much for him I don't see him being competitive at 133. And remember, he pushed Shawver up to 133.

Poz wasnt forced to 197, nor did his move up had anything to do w Soldano.. he just didn’t wanna cut weight anymore ;)

Peterson could have still have been in concussion protocol. Sunday to Friday is a quick turn around to be cleared. And if was cleared, when was he cleared? Might not have had enough time to get down to weight. Cannot really do anything when in protocol.

I think this is what we will see in March:

- Shawver and Yara will AA again
- Poz will be blood round or close to it
- Walsh, Clark, Olivieri, harer, and barbosa will be much improved and win matches at the national tourney
- Dean is a tbd…I loved him coming out of high school and hope he makes a run
- id be shocked if we see Soldano again and if Turley finishes the season

I had a good laugh at this one, because it's so true. Thanks for the levity.

Well we will need to wait until January 12 when we wrestle Ohio State to learn if we are any better than a top 20 team. Our next matches are against Lock Haven, Princeton, Clarion, Kent State, Gardner Webb, and Indiana who barely beat Columbia by 2 points. I guest we will improve our won-loss record. Will it improve the team wrestling teams ranked between 27 and 50? The Midlands is a mediocre tournament compared to prior years. The top teams seem to be going to the Cliff Keen in Las Vegas and even the Southern Scuffle. We should be at the Cliff Keen

After the NC State match Coach Goodale said, "We've got to be better there. I think we will. It's early. I'm not hitting the panic button. " I sure hope he is right. To me it is clear we are missing Buxton, Rivera, and Pritzlaff. They are all star coaches.

I think it's pretty simple. RU will likely finish 13-6 in duals this season with the losses to NC State, Va. Tech, OSU, PSU, Illinois, and Minnesota. That's what I thought when I saw the initial full schedule. Please prove me wrong.

I wonder if SCW stays there, Soldano transfers.Yara looked good against Mullens.Mullens is no joke and may AA this year. Poz can AA this year if he wrestles a little more offensive.Turley....the kid just doesn't make it happen anymore.Shawver looks very tough.I think he repeats as an AA again.ai think a top 6 finish sounds right.Olivieri can AA too it he generates more offense.

Soldano needs to go 174 next year and wrestle different guys who haven't felt him. It doesn't look like he's gonna change his style so his best bet is wrestling a different weight

SCW beating a AA from last year pumps me up.. if he does better then Soldano at the upcoming tourney then he needs to be starter right away no questions asked.. he earned it, worked hard and improved. Wish we coulda seen Shawver vs Mcgonagle.. Olivieri defense is good but he needs to start picking off AA caliber guys before we can predict AA.. his biggest win of career thus far was against Ohio state kid. I hope Soldano doesn’t transfer if SCW wins the spot as Soldano can wrestle 174 next year but yeah if u get too comfortable no spot is gtd..

Stunned at how good SCW looked. Not much tape on him and opponent probably heavily scouted and prepped for Soldano’s funk and SCW was a bit of a curveball. Hope he keeps it up. Wild that a kid who barely placed in states as a senior in NJ knocks off a former AA and doesn’t look out of place doing it.

Nothing crazy. From what I’ve heard he was respected but not liked. Similar to Suriano but a more charismatic version. Kids scrapped with him and he probably helped make them better, but they weren’t calling each other on the weekends to hang out. Bit of a lone wolf.

Saw it first hand a few years ago at regions, bunch of RU wrestlers were there sitting front row and laughing and hanging with each other watching their former HS teammates compete. This group included mostly local shore kids but even Shawver was there despite being an out of state kid and Alvarez who had no ties to the kids in the region. Remember also seeing Odonnell, Benner, Messina, Epperly, and DeSantis. Rivera was there as well, sitting multiple sections away by himself. Thought it was pretty odd at the time, and I’ve since had it confirmed that his relationship with the guys off the mat was almost nonexistent.

No he didn’t. Shawver was getting too big for 125 and was struggling to keep his weight there. Having another highly recruited teammate at 125 certainly made the decision easier but Shawver was likely going up regardless.

Fair point.

Wonder why Mcgonagle didn’t go.. If it was to protect seed that’s lame..
LOL. What seed is McConagle protecting? Shawver is higher ranked.

Shawver looked good did what he should to backup
Olivera..solid match had a shot
Cetta..did best he could overmatched
Harer..not great, not bad. Hippolito an unorthodox wrestler, interested to see his future..fun kid to watch
Barbosa..nice comeback, finish it. Best option at the weight
Turley..great 1st period. Inexcusable getting pinned
Walsh..starter, next topic, I don’t care if Soldano beats him at Black Knight..he’s the best guy against other opponents
Poz..disappointing
Yara..good win. Gonna need to beat Mullin types to get to AA status again. Possible bloodround type match

Mcgonagle shoulda went then idk..

Rewatched the Walsh match and he looked amazing.. he barely looked tired at all. Looks like rolling around w Labriola is paying dividends. Agreed, Walsh should be the new starter and if Soldano is unable or unwilling to make 174 then idk..

But why make a comment about him potentially sitting for seeding purposes when that makes no sense? It’s a dig at the kid and makes you look like you have no clue how ducking works.

Pretty obvious the kid would have wrestled if he was able. You really believe kids at this level “don’t” want to wrestle? Cmon man.

A duck would have been if Shawver didn’t take the mat against MGonagle and then wrestled Sunday at Black Knight. In other words, he sat out the tough match and took easier road 2 days later

Is he hurt?

Is he hurt?
This is college wrestling. Teams don’t give injury reports. Obviously if he was healthy/able he would have taken mat. Who knows. Point is it’s not because he was “protecting seed” when he’s the lower ranked wrestler.

The match could have only helped McGonagle

He could've been sick or had skin funk who knows but it wasn't a duck. Hawks missed his match against Ruth because of a skin issue. People were acting like he sat against Ruth most of the time we don't know. Like you said before it's D1 wrestling these kids are alphas and don't just miss matches because the other kid is good. Kids at this level have been wrestling good kids forever.

Overall, it was a decent performance. Like everyone said, the physicality difference was clearly evident. VT is a tough squad.

125- Huge age/strength gap, but the ceiling is high for Smith. Kid is quick!
133- Job well done. Great duck under.
141- Great match, not far off from jumping to the next level. Almost had him on his back if time didn't expire 2x.
149- Held his own and made him have to work for it. Closer than the score indicated imo. Shit, the guy is a national champ.
157- Good match. Definitely winnable. Hard to wrestle that type of funk. Won't go up against many unorthodox wrestlers like that.
165- Great comeback. Showed guts. Kid is great in the neutral position .
174- Disappointing in the fact that he got pinned while leading the #3 guy in the country. He dominated on top and had a great takedown. Hasn't showed much improvement on bottom throughout the years and shouldn't have chosen it to begin the 3rd. There's still some positives though.
184- Wow! Very impressive win. But as mentioned, he probably wasn't scouted at all. SCW wrestled smart and his conditioning was on point. Looking forward to watching more of his matches and his development.
197- Tough matchup against a good opponent.
HWT- Really happy Yara beat Mullen. Mullen will be a problem though. Good win.

I think the two matches against the top ACC teams will help. Now onto some lesser talented competition. Wish RU was at CKLV. I think it's a better tourney to prep for Big10s and Nationals.

Poz wasnt forced to 197, nor did his move up had anything to do w Soldano.. he just didn’t wanna cut weight anymore ;)
This is the problem. RU guys don't seem to want to make the weight cuts that the top teams do. Soldano is another one that doesn't seem to want to cut down a class. VT guys looked 2 weight classes bigger than our guys. The guy Poz wrestled looked like he cut 50 lbs with the frame he had.

Bc we literally see it all the time. Cornell last year?? Everyone taking less matches then even 10 years ago. Kids not facing each other for w.e reason who the heck knows.. u lost a round in a tourney? Why wrestle back anymore just MFF the whole way. Big match hyped up on flo?? HALF THE TIME it don’t even happen for w.e reasons.. top wrestlers not showing up for events.. your kidding yourself if ur saying this doesn’t happen more often in todays age.

Believe what you want..according to you, every kids a ducker when they don’t take mat. Ridiculous

There’s clearly been instances of ducking (great example is when Zeke Jones pulled back Schultz as he was walking on mat to face Kerkliviet to preserve seed and unfortunately the committee rewarded him for it).

Cornell another program notorious for ducking (2 yrs in a row, they promote big matches only to wrestle backups). Tom Ryan used to do it back in the day, but no more.

All that being said. It’s not the kids, it’s the coaches.

And it’s never a “duck” when the lower rated wrestler (McGonagle) missed the match

Maybe just think before you accuse. That’s all

No need to be a grammar nazi . I used “duck” incorrectly, u happy? Was simply frustrated the match looking forward too didn’t happen. Just chill man. That’s all

Hell..Why didn’t you say that in the first place!! Yeah sure we all wanted to see the match and it sucks we didn’t. I took offense with the “is he ducking/protecting seed” comment.

If you were just upset with not seeing a marquee match..yeah I’m with you. We all wanted the best matchups!

All good!😀👍
