Russo to Temple

Doesn't really make sense. You'd think he'd go to a school that runs a pro offense and a coach that won't be leaving in a year. Sucks he didn't have better options.

This board was telling me Rhule was leaving at the end of 2015 season. Now you're telling me it's the end of next season, so at the end of 2016 are you going to be saying it'll happen next year?

If he wins nex year yes he will leave. If not, he will be stuck there. My gut says he is rolling the dice on PSU opening up

...I dunno, but I can't wait to see Greg Webb help cut the ribbon on your groundbreaking ceremony for your 'done deal new stadium' next month.

I would think that if Coach Ash wanted him to run our O,Ash would have convinced him to stay.He didn't and he didn't. Success to Anthony in all that he does.

Once again, MR is not going anywhere. The TU admin just ripped up the old extension and gave him a new deal that pays him just a little less than what Herman earns at Houston. He needs to leave for what??? An extra million???? You can't live off of nearly 3?????? The coaching staff all received nice raises too. We're in good shape. BTW, not that I care one way or the other but the BOT is voting this week regarding the finances to proceed with the architects plans. It's a new year, but I guess I have to sound like a broken record. WE ARE NOT the TU of the 1990s.

What's Temple's end game? Are you hoping for the ACC? It's probably not going to happen. Not in this lifetime.

Short term, AAC without question. Contract is up for renegotiating after next season. The league won't secure P5 money but it'll be boost. Couple that with the UA deal we signed for the next 5 years and I'll take it. We'll have a nice revenue stream coming in.

Long term? Who knows? You know for a fact the ACC won't get poached after its GOR expires? If you do have that psychic abilities, then maybe you can tell me and the board what the stock market will do for the rest of the 1st quarter.

If LSU were to offer Anthony, he should've gone there. They would've misused him and prematurely ended his career. It's what they do with all of their QBs.

Lmao - yeah, because who would switch jobs over a measly extra mil? Seriously, go away now. You're dumbing up our board.

OwlFaninNorthJersey is cool; he's knowledgable and I've never seen him come here just to talk crap...and he comes around rain or shine, unlike their posters who basically vanished right after their USF game.

Thanks Joe. The folks that know me know that I don't come here to flame. That's why when I do visit I am surprised at those that spew venom at my alma mater. Totally not cool with that.

We don't fit the Big 10 model. We aren't an AAU accredited university and the league already has a presence in PA. The ACC however will eventually need to checkmate the Big 10 by making a presence in the Northeast/Mid Atlantic region but none of that will occur until the ACC decides to get itself out of bed with Raycom. That's a big reason why the league doesn't have a network.

Fast forward 10 years from now and you tell me if the 4th largest media market won't garner attention if we're able to build and maintain traction off of this past season.

Time will tell. Good luck in 2016.

Where is Temple getting all this money from? And when you say architect's plans, is this for a stadium? And not trying to flame, but when I visited Temple, the neighborhood was a war zone. Is that still the case?

No, not even close. The campus area is undergoing a massive gentrification. You wouldn't recognize the area if it's been more than 5 years since you last visited.

Yes, architect plans are for the stadium. 35k is the initial plan, expandable to 45k if the need arose. 15th Street behind McGonagle and the Liacouras Center would be closed and erased from the city grid. Stadium would go behind those 2 facilities and our hoops basketball facility to create a "sports complex". Non rev sports are moving back to Main Campus and their facilities are being built where the old William Penn High School used to stand.

As I mentioned, we signed a big deal with UA that pays us 30 mil over the next 5 years. The tv deal generates another 1.5 or so per year. The new deal probably bumps it to 2 and change. The AAC pools its bowl revenues and distributes it evenly unlike what the BE did. We got a check for 2.2 from the league office. Like I said, while it isn't P5 revenue, it's a hell of a lot better than what we used to earn as an A10/MAC member.

Good stuff for Temple. It has been a lot of years since I visited Temple. Visited Rutgers Camden the same day.

Temple, which just had a much better year then we did, just nabbed one of our best 2016 recruits. And dude's are knocking Temple?

That's a good get, and it's a good spot for Russo. I know he won't get to get his arse kicked by the likes of Ohio State, but AAC is not a terrible conference, we've seen some good QB's play in that conf during it's short history.

And if Rhule thinks Russo can be a really good QB, he might hang around at Temple and let Russo win him some games.

Knight shift,

As an alum, it's really cool to see the school transform from a rinky dink commuter school into a university. Our people in charge today are Big 10 folks and when they came onboard, they brought an entirely new mindset with them. You can bet dollar to donuts that if these folks were calling the shots in the 90s, we would have graduated from the AAC a long time ago. We're positioning ourselves perfectly in time for the next round of musical chairs.

War zone? Are you kidding me? You're either a suburban soccer mom scared of cities in general or you haven't been to Philadelphia in 25 years.

Temple is a nice school. Philly is a great city.

Never thought he would be good in college. In high school he threw from a quiet pocket to D1 level Wide Receivers. He's not use to getting pressured and cornerbacks covering his wideouts.

Unfortunately you probably got lumped in with the group of about 3-4 TU posters who come around from time to time to fire salvos our way; it ramped up a bit around late October/ early November (when our season really started hitting the skids and you guys were hitting your stride) and then again the week of the AAC title game. After the UH game and especially the Boca Raton Bowl they basically went into witness protection. When Elorm flipped to Rutgers, we actually had a thread that was very neutral towards Temple in discussing the flip until that 'group' showed up and started up again.

I actually appreciate JHG's passion and think PAPreps does a great job on his blog, but his constant "Temple>Rutgers" shtick is beyond old. The other TU posters that come here tend to be your version of the 'venom spewers' (or are ncaaball's 252663th screennames).

It is pretty obvious you haven't been to Temple in a long, long time. I don't think anyone who has been to Temple anytime recently would say our campus looks like a war zone. Once we get this library and quad built, and the stadium built, it's going to propel us upward significantly.

I would think that if Coach Ash wanted him to run our O,Ash would have convinced him to stay.He didn't and he didn't. Success to Anthony in all that he does.
With that type of speculation we might think : the reason Anthony picked Temple is because LSU told him they would let him know where he stands after they talked to Haskins.
Ash might have made a pitch to him but Russo was more worried about not fitting in at RU than Ash was about how Anthony would fit in the offense DM will be implementing ( based on the roster)
to make RU FB's O a success.

Russo never really had any quality offers, and now he's at Temple.
Again, now that Elorm Lumor is committed to Rutgers, he's good, but now that Russo is committed to Temple, he's not good. I just want to understand the narrative.
I thought Russo was underrated and still do.
But pointing out offers received is just stating facts

If the Owls are successful in the field what you say might happen and Temple will need to show its fans support it by filling the seats at home games.
Of course Basketball must remain good.
The TV market is a big deal and that helps, but Temple has to prove it can win and fill seats for the ACC to consider it.

You seem level headed but I still have to disagree about MR staying and here's why. You guys had a banner year and ended up playing on a Tuesday night against a crap opponent. Coaches want to win and compete against the highest competition and unless you Win 11 games you aren't getting a New Years game. My guy says MR has spoken to money people about Franklin's future and that's what he's waiting on. If Franklin turns it around he's gone and if he doesn't he's gone to PSU.

If that is supposed to say gut, you're entitled to your opinion. If that is truly supposed to say guy, it's absolute bullshit.

I'm not sure what "the narrative" even means. That said, again, as best I understand it, no other major conference team offered Russo, yet for months some thought we had Johnny Unitas. The Elite 11 sounds, well, really elite and all. But RU was getting someone no other P5 team wanted. And, when the new RU staff didn't really want him, and he knew that RU's new system wasn't for him, he moved on, and there still weren't any P5 offers for him. He tried to get some interest from LSU, the one major P5 team seemingly willing to take and later cast off any QB, but that didn't seem to work either.

Should be interesting to see if this QB turns out to be a player. Outside of RU, no P5 team seemed to think he would be.

Vk91,

I can't elaborate too much on this but can say that the talks with Mizzu were very serious and MR turned them away. Mrs MR had no desires of relocating to Columbia.

Now, I would have agreed with you a year ago about eventually losing MR to Ped St if the James Franklin experiment failed and he continued to have success at TU. Seemed like a no brainer being he grew up in SC and both are PSU alums, but again Mrs MR was asked about her thoughts on the subject and rejected them immediately calling SC a "cow pasture". Her description, not mine.

So, while the school and the surrounding area may have appealed to her as a teen and young 20 something, the place apparently no longer holds that same meaning for a 40 something woman. She is very, very big on city life and what cities as a whole have to offer over college towns.

Call me nuts, but if we do eventually lose MR, it won't be to another college but back to the NFL and. If an NFL team does come after him, it will tell me that he left the program in very good hands for his successor.

We know of an up and coming "hot" coach, who's "missus" called the shots as far as where to go. That coach has now been demoted to a position coach (position coach for the national champs but still, a position coach). Turned out that coach simply lucked into some pretty good players and couldn't replicate his success once those players graduated.

Don't get me wrong, this is not a flame. I think Rhule is a much better coach. But the real test to his abilities will be this coming year with different players.

Agree. In his and his staff's defense, they redshirted some very competent ballplayers and while our D won't be as stingy as 2015, I think they'll be ok once the kids settle in and get comfortable in their new roles. The O remains solid with key players returning that got significant playing time in 2015. Key with any team is minimizing injuries but if they happen, having someone that can come in and pick up where the starter left off.

Not wearing cherry colored glasses, but the 2016 season has the makings of an 8-4, 9-3 type of season. Where we need to improve is becoming quicker. USF and Houston exposed that deficiency.

2017 is the make or break season for it will be the 1st season after PJ and a TU fan has to hope that Nutile or Russo will be able to take the program to the next step.

That's why I think Russo was huge for you guys; without him I think you'd be screwed for 2017 and beyond. For next year you have 3 looming issues IMO regardless of who you have coming back:

-3 new OL (rarely is replacing more than half your line just 'plug and play', especially since Friend was a 3-year starter)

-No Robbie Anderson (none of your other WR's seemed close to his dynamic)

-No Matakevich (he was a day 1 starter for 4 years and a national award winner. Unless you're Alabama, again, NOT just a 'plug and play' replacement type guy)

...and the most common mistake fans make (including Rutgers)- the skewed belief system that:

A)- your team improves in a vacuum while no one else does

And

B) your subs/ new guys are all-conference+ players just waiting to happen
