Rutgers -1 to -2 tomorrow: First time in FORTY-ONE years favorite against nationally ranked opponent

last time?

March 1979 in NCAA eastern regional in Greensboro, NC against 16th ranked St Johns ...

We cover tomorrow

Go RU
OMG, don’t bring up that game! We had beaten St. John’s 2X that year and lost this game. Would have had Penn between us and Magic Johnson in the final four had we beaten St. John’s.

We’re favored against a ranked team but zero votes for Top 25. Oh well, one step at a time. Time to TCB.

Now you are really stirring memories. As part of the WRSU crew, summoned to Greensboro , my good buddies still to this day, Doug Meyer and Dave Siegelman broadcast that game and my other roommate Kenny Grossman ( now Chamlin) had Billy Packer as our halftime guest as Tobacco Road was in shock as Duke and UNC had lost leaving Syracuse , UPenn, St. John’s and Rutgers in Greensboro. Increbilby disappointed when we blew that 10 point halftime lead and Wayne McCoy ‘s tip in , as my other good buddy Tony Malanga and I were going to broadcast the Regional final on Sunday back to central Jersey . This was pre ESPN so a really decent listening audience was going to hear our call of the game to get us back to the Final Four to play Magic Johnson. We would have killed Penn. Still to this day one of the biggest disappointments in my Rutgers sports fandom .Now 41 years later , it would be fitting to get back to the NCAA ‘s as we have suffered enough.

I was at that game! (As well as the regional win in Greensboro 3 years earlier)..We went into a stall against St Johns way too early, lost all momentum and the 10 point lead vanished..it would have been Dunk City for Bailey in the regional final against Penn, and we could have returned to the final four with Michigan and Indiana (States this time)..would have been a tall order getting by Magic and MSU in semi, but if we did we would have faced an Indiana State team that’s last loss was to Rutgers in the NIT the year before!

You nailed the history. Wayne mcKoy got his fourth foul and we were up 9 with the ball with 8-9 minutes to go...and they had no answers for James Bailey. Tom Young slowed it down instead of going for the kill and kept them in the game until they hit the game winner with 4 seconds to go

Penn would have been no match and we would have gone to the final four ...and it’s been all down hill

That was then.

Today...we win and make another step toward that point where we fell off...

THIS team has a chance to do something special ...and ahead of schedule but that requires winning today and every week breaking another milestone

Last week...winning first big ten road game

This week...winning first game as favorite as a ranked opponent in 41 years

Although I also think I would rather be the dog here, quite a compliment by the bookies on how they view RU and playing at the RAC.

Relax and enjoy the process. Asking why we're not receiving votes for the Top 25 and other irrelevant items, only matter at the end of this next 2 month process.

The process remains at least a full year ahead of schedule and that's where my focus is.....on these 17 games as a entire snapshot. And my #1 goal for what's most important for this program isn't recruiting related, isn't style of play, or other variables like that.

It's how this program has likely filled the building for a weeknight game, in January on a Tuesday night.

Filling and making the RAC, the "RAC", is the single most important thing for this program. There are 8 Home dates and a 9th semi-home game at MSG vs Michigan.

Fill the building at the RAC and buy up the MSG tickets for Michigan, a game that there's really no tangible excuse to not have 8K RU fans there at MSG.

Do that and the rest takes care of itself....and don't start whining when we lose a couple of close games, which is inevitably going to happen during this process.

Good luck to the Scarlet Knights tonight. A few weeks ago I posted something like ".500 would be a miracle." I'm now convinced that it will happen, at least...

Want this win so bad. Continue the fast starts and establish Myles early.
More apt to happen with Paul getting in early. I think Myles can dominate Watkins. Concerned that we will have a tough time getting him the ball.

Does every response you make have to be a damn novel. Geez

Well any even slight disregard by PSU will be gone once they see that they are favored to lose. They will come out guns a blazing we need to step up our game. Any surprises SHU got at the RAC I’m sure chambers will have PSU prepared for

They weren’t suprised. They were just ambushed and bitch slapped. Williard saying he didn’t prepare his guys for the RAC atmosphere was a total joke as it was much louder 2 years ago when we beat them. Penn State will be used to the crowd but we are a much much better team than the one that lost by a point last year.
