Rutgers baseball coaching search: 11 potential candidates, including an early favorite

Based on his past hires I would take this piece with a major, major grain of salt, as Things have been pretty much on lockdown during his hiring process regarding any potential list of candidates, let alone a front runner, especially this early in the process. I think we all know where this information is coming from - people who are close to our assistant coach’s and others - and that’s fine, and understandable, may even happen, but “grain of salt” nonetheless.

I honestly don’t understand how any athletic director wouldn’t completely clean house BUT he is buddies with our assistants so you never know.

That being said with his pedigree at Kean how Neil Iovarrio is NOT considered the “guy to get” - by all here - is surprising.

BTW - I’m willing to bet that our athletic director is not very happy about this at all. Based on an earlier article he probably knows at least one alumni who is talking to the papers and I can’t imagine that he’s too thrilled at this point. Not good for his search in any way, shape, or form, let’s be real.

It is very clear the tone from reading that article is from people with a specific agenda. So definitely a huge grain of salt. There is no question that cundari has a top resume. However, the notion that he is just going to be given a job that has other quality candidate highly interested is crazy. If Blankmeyer is seriously interested I might have him as number 1 over the vandy caoch. He is a top recruiter with tons of connections.

I wonder if Rob Walton currently pitching coach at Oklahoma State would be interested ?

Rutherford native and has successful HC experience.

That national search needs to take a look further south. Can not make a hire who does not recruit baseball way beyond the NJ/NY/PA area.

I am all for looking at southern options. I think there are some top coaches who would consider this job. Walton has a bug time resume. He seems like he might want to stay there.

The list was better than expected. highly doubt given the tone of the source that this is anywhere near a complete list of candidates. I like the fordham coach and obviously blankmeyer is a monster recruiter.

I would LOVE to land the UVA or Vandy guy, but unfortunately I don’t think those guys are realistic. They’d want to go to a job where they know the ath dept is committed to winning in baseball which we clearly are not given our HS caliber field.

However a hire like that would be so unlike Rutgers in a good way and would really raise eyebrows in the NJ baseball community. Another guy that would be an absolute gem would be Nonemaker out of Auburn. Roxbury grad who has been very successful in his career. He would absolutely kill recruiting here. I hope Hobbs is testing the waters with these guys as they would be absolute home runs. However, they’d need to be sold on our commitment to the program first

The job is actually regarded pretty well. With decent pay we can contend for some solid people. I think what is best wuld be a hire where ceertain improvements are written into the contract.

Alongi now on Facebook ( Rutgers Athletic Tailgating Club forum) criticizing Hobbs. Not a good look for Alongi, IMO, but he's a former RU terrific player who has a right to voice his opinion. He' not letting it go.

He’s been doing it for days now. Quite obviously one of the voices behind the article, as well, and REALLY needs to let it go. Bottom line:

Why aren’t other former players lining up to back up Doug??? That’s all you need to answer.

What is Alongi so upset about?

I think he’s just too close to the situation, and is understandably upset right now, but hopefully with a really good hire he’ll come around. He’s right about one thing obviously, with the facilities, but there’s a couple other things I think he’s reaching a bit.

ha no, if so we should hire him. He is a rutgers hof member. He played baseball with or around the time of litterio. He is clearly just making absurd comments about litterio. His comments about our hs field being a disgrace and not being mentioned by hobbs as a priority in his plan are accurate. The fact is while other problems with facilities and with ash have gotten the bulk of media attention the fact that we play is the worst facility in all of college baseball is a joke. I cannot believe the big ten didnt require some improvements. The 4 or so million needed to make field a legitimate d1 stadium should be done immediately without waiting. We have enough players who made serious money in mlb. They could handle the naming portion.

While I’m 150% behind getting new facilities for both baseball, and softball, it is very difficult to argue with the way Hobbs is handling our facilities. The sports that make money are getting taken care of first, as they should be, unless there’s a donation specifically earmarked donation for a sport (such as the indoor hitting and pitching facility). l would also like to think, if a new stadium for baseball costs as little as $5 million - which I highly doubt in this state but regardless - that Pat has already reached out to Todd Frazier and others in an attempt to get it done sooner rather than later. .

I agree in general. However baseball is by far the biggest joke, compared to the other sports. Also I am not sure on the total, however, I wasnt talking about a true stadium. I was talking more about the basics to get a minimum stadium like facility. Given the size of the project I think it could certainly be pursued simultaneously. ] With the way he approached the renovations and other expansion projects it is possible that they have not been approached because he hasnt begun that raise. Though he may have. It would really be disappointing if we cannot get a decent percentage from out best ase all alums. We need to start getting more financial support from a biggest athletic successes.

There’s only so much Hobbs can do all at once. He absolutely had to get basketball and football taken care of. Soccer/lax/academic support is next. Patience is needed here.

This is not about the plan in that regard. Though not seeing baseball clearly listed was unacceptable and that is mentioned. If they have a real national search and dont just hire from the staff that helps a lot with patience.

It took RU 8 years to raise $3 million for the baseball practice facility, what Hobbs has done in 3 years is beyond amazing. Let Hobbs do his job & build quality facilities when the money is raised & in the order that he thinks best. Wasting a few million to dress up a pig is how RU did things in the past, do it once & do it right is the best course of action.

If Ioviero is interested, he needs to be higher preference than Cundari.

Proven winner, HC experience, RU legacy vs lifelong assistant from SHU.

Dude...Dallas BAPTIST made the post-season!!

I know but I'm not sure how that's even relevant here. I didn't mention them but seeing a team like Kennesaw State, who hasn't had a .500 season in a few years, getting better recruits is pathetic.

You cite Butler and softball but she had no ties but a solid resume. Results were obvious. But the majority of posts have our fans tripping over themselves to hire a local tied coach and/or a legacy. Mind blowing to me. Hire the best candidate whoever that is and start by rattling the cages of baseball alumni who have essentially given nothing to this program.

Another example is our new Crew coach from Cali. Zero local ties. In 2 seasons took them from no NCAA tournament appearances in 18 years to an 11 please finish off the 13th seed at the NCAA’s this season. We DO NOT To hire a local guy or from within. That doesn’t mean we can’t, nor will it not work, but it just isn’t necessary.

Litterio was a terrible recruiter. We have posters here isnting the guy didnt do that badly. He was a joke and hated on recruiting. I completely agree. We need to hire the best coach after a national search. This is a better job than people think. Yes we have shitty facilities. A good coach is back to competing for ncaa bids in a year or two. We need a coach with a track record of success recruiting winning and getting players drafter. That should have nothing to do with whether or not they are locals or rutgers grads certainly. I do link blankmeyer from st johns. He is the opposite of litterio. Great recruiter. The kennessaw state team recruiter has a top mlb prospect at catcher who went to hs with brito guy is a good recruiter. Litterio should not have been making a living as a coach. He was a terrible recruiter who put in terrible effort. That is how you take a top 50 rpi type team and get the most loses ever and recruiting class not ranked in the top 100. I mean you have to try to be that bad in nj. Just offer a few full scholarships and we should be ranked. You look at the top lists for nj it is just brutal. Beaten out by wagner, monmouth, manhattan , rider. I really hope hobbs doesnt just give the job to cundari. Real search with real resumes as head coaches. unless the coach from vandy.

Crickets on the search for a new baseball coach. Suspicious that this could be an Essex and Middlesex counties and Staten Island search, not a national search. Did Hobbs buy tickets to fly to the College World Series?

What exactly did you expect to hear?

He’s roughly a month and half into the search for a WLAX coach and it’s been crickets. by all accounts that’s a substantially more appealing opening then baseball.
