Rutgers basketball player arrested on 7 charges, including ‘terroristic threats’

For me the worst part of this thread are the posters who comment about how this frees up a scholarship for us. Really??
From everything everyone has said here this is a good kid, looking to escape the chaos and hardship of his homeland and he was involved in what could be or not a serious situation. Looking at the charges they sound a lot more serious then they could be in reality. In fact some of them sound like complete bull.
The fact that 12 hours passed from the time of the incident before an arrest warrant was issued is telling.
I'm not a lawyer but this sounds to me that it wasn't of a nature where the police responded to a violent scene but that someone went in the morning to file a complaint with the police. I have two brothers who are retired law enforcement and over charging is extremely common.
For example:
Under the New Jersey Terroristic Threat statute, a person is guilty of the crime of terroristic threats if he or she threatens to commit a crime of violence with the purpose to terrorize another.
Some guy bumps into you at a bar spilling your beer. You say "Hey buddy I'm going to kick your ass." Terroristic threat
Theft by unlawful taking:
This is the most common type of theft charge in New Jersey because the taking of someone’s movable property without their permission.
"Give me that cellphone or I'll kick your ass" Theft by unlawful taking plus terroristic threat.
As much as I have personal admiration for most law enforcement a lot of this sounds like bull***t.

So if a girlfriend thing. They have a fight. It gets heated. He says he is going to" kick her ass" or says "I'm going to kill you if you don't...". She uses her phone to tape it. He grabs her arm and takes the phone to erase the recording.
All the charges could be as simple as this.
Not excusing the behavior but the charges sound much worse than this one scenario. And I'd bet it is closer to this than the image portrayed by just reading the charges.

This is probably going to be reduced to a nothing burger as someone said. But as for Issa, the term "terroristic threat" is now linked to his name.
It reminds me of former Secretary of Labor and NJ native Ray Donovan. After being acquitted of all politically motivate charges of fraud he famously asked the question: "What office do I go to to get my reputation back?"

You speculate that this is a nothing burger with no knowledge of the facts?

What about the rights of the victim?

Or maybe you think that Issa is the victim?

Also the law needs to be changed regarding terroristic threats. The word terrorist only means one thing. You hate a group of people and you want to kill/hurt people from that group because of their association with that group.

If Issa did not say I am going to blow up the US or kill the president than the police are doing him and the public a severe injustice. A 6’11” black man from a foreign country that just so happens to be 95% islam.... severe injustice . All I see in the papers right now is terroriatic threat.

Most people knows terroristic threat doesn’t just mean being a suicide bomber or blowing up a political target. It can mean many things, most of the time it’s for something kids say all the time “give me my backpack or I’ll kill you,” not that it means an actual attempt to murder.

Kid probably lost his temper with his girlfriend and said something stupid. No assault charges were filed which is a good thing. Hopefully, things work out for him.

Never ever in my life have I ever seen “terroristic threat” in a headline and thought “oh well must have threatened someone because they wouldn’t give his backpack back” or anything other than terror related

SHU fans exercise a steady hand and don’t jump to conclusions when their players get arrested. lol

The credit card 8 was overhyped beyond belief....always best to let things play out....4 of the 8 are back on the roster, after the overhyped headlines, which when actually reviewed by a lawyer, was not as big of a deal as originally thought.....You had fans saying all 8 players would never play again or walk foot on the practice field again, less than 9 months later, 4 are still here and in school....and barring something else, will play this year.....

I don't know what happened with Issa.......what I do know is that RU fans typically jump the gun, overreact to headlines, help with revenue for places that report half the story without knowing much of anything.....It's not to say things that have no relevance or act as if RU is the only school that has players who have domestic disputes etc......

Always best to let things play out, get all the information and not assume NJ.com or app.com or someone has everything buttoned up when they don't.....or rarely ever do get it right the first time.

This is not going to be the last incident in time for RU, doesn't make it right or wrong, just a reality of 18 to 23 year olds, on a college campus, doing kid or young adult things. A student athlete isn't immune from the same things of other students on campus. And yes, they represent the school, blah blah blah.....

This is a distraction that the team doesn't need, but Sunday, the team has to play at Indiana and Issa won't be there.....he may not play ever again at RU, I don't know.....but at the end of the day, you cannot control or burn negative energy on things when they pop up, like the world is crumbling around you. Strap it up, learn from the mistakes, make it a teaching moment for others and hope for the best.

Great post. The Credit Card 8 ended up being not that big of a deal, especially when measured against the horrible felonies committed under Flood. And this is the first incident under Pike that I recall and it could end up being the kind of thing that doesn't have much legs for a kid with a clean record. But for now the suspension is warranted and let's hope the team doesn't lose focus.

Somehow you missed the knife being part of the incident which raises it quite a bit above a typical boyfriend/girlfriend spat.

Ex-Rutgers basketball player facing domestic violence charges banned from campus

Issa Thiam, a junior forward from Dakar, Senegal, was released on Level 3 pre-trial monitoring conditions after appearing before Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Alberto Rivas. Thiam will be required to check in with pre-trial services twice a week – once by phone, once in person – and must surrender his passport. Rivas also prohibited Thiam from any contact with his alleged victim and barred him from the Rutgers University campus.
