Rutgers Beat Themselves

disagree, Miami was the better team and outplayed and outcoached us
Really? I never really got a sense throughout the whole game that they we're a better team than us. It really felt like we were the better team through much of the game, despite several mental lapses.

Even a slightly cleaner sheet on missed bunnies and silly turnovers and we come out of there with a win on the road.

average against who???

the sisters of the poor that they cleaned up on

thats not real competition
It was very apparent early on that this was the fastest and most athletic team that we faced, as our defense was consistently a tick too slow to react. We just weren't prepared coming out of the locker room for this level of speed off the dribble coming off our last several games.

Even so, it didn't feel like Miami was playing well as a team, and they were benefiting from our mistakes.

the last 16:46, RU was outscored 33-15 and only two buckets in the last 8 minutes

it showed how inept our offense is. I dont think its just a bad shooting night, Hyatt is what he is and he missed a ton of shots in that time period and Cliff disappeared, he needs to demand the ball and Pike needs to make sure he gets it, Pike outcoached badly. Also a plethora of turnover by everyone else

better team because they stepped up and controlled the game when it mattered. sure RU could have won but they didnt, RU did virtually nothing that indicated to me that they wanted to win or were capable of winning

Haven’t looked but it felt like Cliff didn’t even get a touch in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Better in the clutch I'll give you. Better overall, I just don't see it.

I think we were sloppier and made more mistakes. It felt more like we gave the game away than they took it from us.

Missed point-blank layups and unforced turnovers are two of the three ways a team beats itself (the other is missed foul shots).

Off the top of my head I can think of at least 4 inexplicable plays where we screwed ourselves out of scoring/opportunities without any resistance from Miami.

Miami deserved to win because they didn’t have as many inexplicable unforced mistakes and self-inflicted missed scoring opportunities. We still beat ourselves. Both can be true.

THAT is a big problem. There have been a few games now.. and TWO LOSSES.. that began without getting Cliff involved in the offense.. other than putting back missed shots.

Hopefully, a Mulcahy return to the lineup will correct that. But that is a coaching failure. Pike should watch the early game and if there is no effort by the ball-handlers to involve Cliff.. especially when he finds space in the lane through effort and speed.. call a timeout and correct it.

The second half started the right way for us with Cliff's involvement.. then he disappeared.. some of it was Cliff's fault.. but, come on... USE HIM.

well get over it, teams have injuries and he may not be back 100% for a while....so what is your solution
We are a 14-17 team without Paul or Caleb
We are a 12-19 team without Paul and Caleb
I hope we are a 19-12 with both of them

Are you listening to Fleetwood Mac without Stevie Nicks?

Torvik has us projected at 18-13 and there’s been a lot of missing Paul/Caleb. I think it’s safe to say that’s basically the OR projection.

there is some preseason stuff there. we were 19-12, whay happened? i guess taking .4 wins happened

There is preseason there, but we haven’t moved down from the preseason I don’t think so that wouldn’t be propping us up at all.

I think what happened is the big ten is better than expected

if you change the date to November 2 you get numbers without preseason bias. before today we were right about the same with and without. Ou D was much higher and our O was much worse

Our great D to start the year is partially a mirage I think. Not that it wasn’t good. But being #1 in 3p% defense is not a recipe for sustainability

No Paul is absolutely killing this team. We would be undefeated if he didn't get hurt

Seeing him writhing on the floor vs Columbia sucked. I knew it then and said it out loud - love the hustle but just really not the right move in that game. Really hurts this season.

I don’t disagree, but in Paul’s defense it’s hard to hold back on something that’s instinctive. As a leader I also think he feels compelled to set an example for the new guys. Just an unfortunate injury, for him and for the team, and for our early season results.

I've said multiple times that Paul can play out of control and have been shouted down about it. I've mostly harped on his first 2 seasons where he would do that back to the basket/shoulder check move to create space for a shot or movement. He's gotten better at not doing that as much and getting called for it. The floor diving in what's essentially a pre-season game is another example.

He's far more important to this team to do anything recklessly. Just watch the last half of the second half last night to see why he might be more important to this team than Cliff. I'm not suggesting he play in a bubble or at half speed, he just needs to choose his spots better because it's best for the team.

Totally absurd comment!

PIke wins because his players give the extra effort!

Asking players to only play 90% or think about it before they give their all is the perfect prescription for failure.

Stunning that someone actually gave this comment an up vote. I guess if you haven't played or coached, this seems like a reasonable point to make! lol

i Have an excuse!!!!!!

Paul was hurt. We were playing without a point guard.
Its a recruiting problem when Paul is the only true point guard on the team. Its a recruiting problem when the bench scores only six points. Its a recruiting problem when there is no go to scorer at crunch time.

What happened to o today's bball where 5 guys play 5 positions?
Pike has had Paul, cam, Caleb, miller, and Simpson bring up the ball all season. If having a true back up PG is so critical why not pick just one or two to be that player.
It isn't a PG issue. It's a lack of passing and guys getting the first pass and playing my turn ball.

In retrospect, was it a good idea for Paul to make that dive for the ball in a early season game? He's not playing 90 percent if he's not throwing his body on the floor during what's essentially is a scrimage.

You can’t play that way. Especially Rutgers. The question maybe to ask is why was he playing against Columbia
