Wrestling Rutgers HWT Yara Slavikouski (2024 All-American) has entered the transfer portal

Granted different circumstances but Yara only came here because we landed him while he was in the portal in the first place. If he goes elsewhere it’s hard to be mad at him. Kind of sucks and leaves us high and dry but NIL is broken so this is the new norm
Huh? Totally different. Last week he said he was returning to Rutgers for 1 more yr. Then, all of a sudden he gets offered $ to leave while literally practicing here? Last season, he entered the portal because he graduated from Harvard and they don't allow you to wrestle more than 4 years.

Getting word that Anthony Mimmo medina is offering 185k to yara to wrestle at his school next year. I really hate this new NIL world. Has completely ruined everything. A college kid should not get paid 100k from a university worth millions of dollars and in most cases billions.

Like I said, different circumstances

If Michigan offered him a bag why would you blame him? There’s not many jobs that are going to pay you 200k right out of college. Dude will wrestle one more year and have a huge head start on life before you even consider his education.

The original idea was for players to be able to make money off their brand. Instead, NIL has become “well give you a bunch of nonsense opportunities to make this exact dollar amount.”

Good for the kids to make their money. Bad for the fans and smaller schools.

I think you're pretty spot on here. Who wouldn't take 200k to play a sport at 23 years old? Anyone blaming the athlete for transferring is being disingenuous, especially when you consider that college coaches and administrators have had free reign to break contracts for better opportunities for decades now.

The problem is not with him pursuing greater monetary opportunities. Yara was not honest when he said he planned to return on Mar. 23.

WOW, just saw this. Major bummer.
I was happy we didn't have anyone transfer out of our starting lineup for NIL.
I thought he was all about academics.
Don't blame him, but it does stink.
If it is a 6 figure amount, that can set him up for the beginning of his life.

Does anyone know that for sure though? Perhaps he had every intention of staying at Rutgers when he made that statement.

Anyway, if honesty were suddenly introduced to collegiate athletics, the entire NCAA would collapse in about 24 hours. Coaches and administrators lie so often it's basically a prerequisite of the job. I'm not defending it, of course, but if one is searching for morals in sports, prepare for a long journey.

Yeah, don't hate the player, hate the game... I don't blame the athletes for taking the $, especially in wrestling where there isn't huge $ after college. The system is broken and the NCAA is incompetent. As for coaches and admins moving around freely LMAO, there's no correlation to that and what's going on now.

This biggest letdown is he said he is coming back. Other than that it's no different than any of us taking a larger signing bonus to go to a different firm after we had committed to one out of college. I just wish they had NIL when I was in school. Wild West out there and we are lucky to hold onto the ones we have because if you are great you will get "poached". Need a great room and even better coaches as athletes won't quit great coaches as easy just for money.

The biggest issue now is that depending on what Turley decides, we went from having a very solid lineup having only the typical black hole in the line up at 165 to potentially now having 3 massive holes.

The coaching staff needs to do some serious work in the portal to sure up at least 2 of those or else it's going to be a massive let down of a year.

Yep potentially 3 black holes w no Turley.. although SCW might be able to hang.. or maybe move Soldano to 174 and Poz to 184 but then no 197..

And more importantly, imo, who will be scoring points for us at nationals in Philly next year?? How do we improve on our 22.5 20th placing?? Teams like Little Rock and Stanford outplaced us and that’s w Yara on our team…

Yup Yara was about half our points and we couldn't past powerhouses like Little Rock.. Unless we make a splash in the portal next year will be rough.

I know we can't get champagne recruits with our beer budget wallets, but were gonna need to figure something out.

Wonder if Goodale has people reaching out to non portal athletes on other teams like every other coach in the country is doing to our wrestlers.

Please provide proof that there was tampering. We seem to make excuses and fail to look internally as to what we could be doing better. What can we learn from programs such as South Dakota State, Little Rock, West Virginia, Northern Iowa, and others that have less money, are in lesser conferences, and did better than us. If we refuse to question Goodale, we are settling for being average. Hopefully, Rutgers fans have bigger dreams and don't want to be average.

I agree. Yara is a smart and successful guy. Why not reach out to the university in need of a heavyweight, who gets heavyweights to the finals, and is rumored to pay up? He is not Rutgers guy but a rental. I am sure tampering is going on but if you are Yara, would you sit content on a team happy to just place a couple of guys or see if you can get paid more to keep the heavyweight success going at a different school with practice partners who have had that success and coaches who have guided them to that success?

I wish him the best and hope he makes a big jump next year!

Why is information so difficult to get? Would it be so hard to say Yara-Slav got an offer too good to turn down? Or, he decided to entertain offers for financial gain? I suspect the former, but why not be more forthcoming rather than leave it to so much speculation?

When he said he would return next year, I believe he believed it. When situations change, it doesn't mean the guy was lying. I think Yara was a better wrestler at the beginning of the year. He did his best at NCAA but we have to be honest about the blood round match. Bastida (number 2 seed?) was deflated and uninspired from his championship-round loss. He had believed he would be wrestling in the finals. Still, an AA is an AA, just like in the Covid year.

I wonder if Penn State's 197 back-up would be interested.

Impossible to prove but kind of impossible to enter the portal and have a dollar figure decided immediately without prior conversations

I agree, that Yara felt more consistent at the start of the year than the big ten stretch where he went 6-5 and had some surprising losses. If we are being honest Yara was a bit of a surprise AA and agreed that Bastida did not wrestle his best after too much talking of winning n lost and Yara did to make podium.. which really raised his stocks…

Unpopular opinion but I dont think Yara is a sure fire AA next year and whoever is getting him is buyin him for one year while his stock is the highest… while a high lvl hwt imo it’s still a coin flip if Yara will AA next year.

Yara's Top Potential (IMO) is between 5th to 8th on the podium.
That is nothing to sneeze at and puts him as one of the top HW.
I dont think he can hang with the top 3 or 4 HW (I am not sure who is returning, but i imagine Schultz and Feldman will be back along with a few others.

the 10 points he gets at NCAA will be missed.

If he does leave, I actually hope he does not AA.
Then Rutgers can point to his success at RU.

I actually like yara a lot and he seems like a solid person with a bright future.

Does Boone have any eligibility :)

Lol on that last sentence. Pretty sure Boone doesn't and I'd be extremely lukewarm at best about bringing him back even if he did.

A lot of the “sr” have that optional Covid year so not sure yet if Kerk and others are going to come back yet.. plus there will always be new freshman force that will come into the AA picture.. like the new Iowa hwt for example.

Boone had a pretty good regular season.. not sure what happened post season tho as he went 0-2.

Wish wrestling had some way to bet futures AA or something … cant Even bet the national finals.. someone show sportsbook how to set wrestling lines…

Boone is done

Looks like he's back. Bullet dodged.

Hope all the posters here who started badmouthing him for going back on his word based on a tweet from a guy who doesn’t have the greatest reputation admit they were wrong.

Yara likely used the portal to get some well deserved NIL/scholarship money and that’s that. He said he was coming back and there was little reason to not believe a kid of his character.

i agree with your first paragraph

but not your second where you say "little reason not to believe"...it sounds like if he got a better offer he was gone...no? or are you saying he was DEFINITELY coming back and used this for leverage? Either way, I dont think you can say we had no reason to worry

in any event, I loved how he represented RU all year so i am thrilled he is back!

This is why i log in and check news in the AM on vacation!!!!
3 to 4 AA"s should be considered to be a good season
125,133,197,285!

Both paragraphs were equally dumb.
