Rutgers is looking at Ohio State's Chris Ash (FOX Sports)

Did Ash leave Arky to go to OSU? or did he get the boot from Arky to make room for Robb Smith?

I'm glad we're casting a wide net. If we're considering DC's, I hope we also contacted Clemson's Bren Venables.

I am trying to get more info from some OSU connections but so far I've heard back from multiple contacts and all think that he would be a great get for RU. They all think RU should be highly interested if nothing else. Throwing around some very high compliments about his coaching but also his ability to lead.

Ive seen him speak in person. He's not smooth but he commands a room.

Scoring D for Ash as DC:

13 Wisconsin
16 Wisconsin
89 Arkansas
26 Ohio State
2 Ohio State

Other than the blip in Arkansas, extremely impressive. Extra points for doing it in the B1G.

How hard is it to have a good defense at OSU with the recruits they get? I'm more impressed by the Wisconsin stat, as they historically don't have nearly as highly rated classes as OSU (based on memory here). Schiano please, or some other reasonably proven head coach.

I don't know anything about Ash. The background looks decent on paper.

Rich Rod - yes, that would be an interesting name for sure. You think he'd like coming back to the B1G and trying to stick it to Michigan?

Breaking: Chris Ash has pulled out of the Syracuse search, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Clears way for Dino Babers
Didn't see this before I started a new thread on it. But it's the first real news on this dude; maybe it deserves its own? It's reasonable to speculate he withdrew because he and Rutgers were getting close (though he could've also sense he wasn't getting the job there).

ha! Things change so quickly!

Ash sounds like a winner, plus he learned from the very best. Our defense should get a lot better if he were hired.

People need to stop putting too much focus on big sexy names and focus on who is the best fit. That is what USC and Maryland have done.

If this was the NFL, records like 8-5 and 7-5 are above average - more wins than loses. However, almost all P5 teams play mostly patsies OOC, so 8-5 and 7-5 means you lost most of your league games against real competition - so not impressive. Rutgers also had a 8-5 record last year, but did not have a good year, although the bowl win was impressive

Kiffin's history as HC:
2009 - Tennessee. 7-6 overall, 4-4 SEC, #37 massey composite, #10 Rivals recruiting.
2010 - USC. 8-5 overall, 5-4 P10, #27 massey, #1 recruiting. 71 scholarship players, many preseason transfers.
2011 - USC. 10-2 overall, 7-2 P12, #10 massey, #4 recruiting
2012 - USC. 7-6 overall, 5-4 P12, #32 massey, #8 recruiting

Looks like he never had a sub-.500 conference record in his 4 years in the SEC and P10/12. He also never had a recruiting class ranked worse than 10th by Rivals, or a massey composite lower than #37. Not bad.

The biggest knock on him was that he took the preseason #1 in 2012 and ended unranked (even though preseason polls are meaningless, that's a big drop). In that season, they were 6-1 with a one TD loss to #17 Stanford before being upset at unranked Arizona by 3 points. They then dropped 3 of their next 4, all against Top 17 teams, losing Matt Barkley for the final two games.

Kiffin's resume is a hell of a lot better than anything we've seen.

I can't speak to how Chris Ash will be as a head coach, but I will say....

In 2013, OSU missed the BCS title game because the defense was historically bad. Watch that defense against Michigan and Clemson that year -- it was awful. Luke Fickell was a co-coordinator for that 2013 defense.

Before 2014, after the non-Fickell co-coordinator "left" for the James Madison job, Urban brought in Chris Ash "to fix the defense." In 2014, OSU won the NC and held Oregon to 20 points despite OSU having 4 turnovers and Oregon having none (until the final play of the game).

But yeah, I'm sure BB took Ash with him to Arkansas from Wisconsin and then fired Ash before Ash ended up at Ohio State. Ohio State takes a lot of Arkansas scraps.

and Georgia hired a DC with no HC experience. If you are not hiring someone like Richt, it is going to be rolling the dice with either P5 coordinator or a lower level HC.

this is going to be fun--everybody sucks- and even hall fans have an opinion--those opinions are worthless

According to their board he was the leader....now its the ''other'' guy....Babers.

He's very good too and a name I've mentioned in the past couple years but reading about him he supposedly quite a hot head and prick. I liked him a lot but when reading that on a few boards and blogs, it cooled me off on him a lot. He's a good recruiter by reports and he'd likely run the spread too. If not for the possible attitude issues he'd be at the top of my list with Aranda but he's completely off because of that. We don't need any more "abuse" controversies.

He's also been a DC for 15 years or so and you wonder if it's those issues that have prevented him from getting a HC job. I think he'll get one eventually but I wonder if that hasn't hampered his career advancement.

Let me just say, the mere fact that we are discussing and DC from national champion OSU to become RU's head coach is amazing to me. The fact that the national news is discussing this is amazing to me. Anyways, carry on.
