Being a goalie in lacrosse has to be the craziest position in all of sports. Very little protection against a hard rubber ball coming in at over 80 MPH(some might break 100) . How in today's safety conscience sports world are these guys are not allowed to wear more pads is beyond belief. I am not saying have them wear hockey goalie equipment, but they should be allowed to wear protection to cover their legs like catchers equipment.

I feel like the D1 college level is actually safer for the goalies than lower levels. Yea, the players shoot much harder, however, the are much more accurate. Go down levels and those kids can shoot hard, but tend to hit the goalie in awkward places. That said, our starting goalie took a bounce shot that kept him out last game, so it happens. And yea, goalies are different. It takes a special breed to see a game and say yea, I want to stop the ball from going in the net.

My first shot in rec league I hit the goalie in the throat. I think we both cried.

The one area that really concerns me once the schedule gets tougher is faceoffs.

Goalies now have it tough. Between a combination of the equipment and the kids being so good, shooting has never been better. It is a shame more teams don't play like we do to take advantage of it. These teams who pass the ball around for minutes at a time before trying to actually score are hard to understand. Defenses are certainly more sophisticated, but still. I call it the Princeton effect. They won big that way, but man, it set the game back from an entertainment level. Success breeds imitation, unfortunately in this case. Glad that we do it different.
That's because to get the "Princeton effect" they had to play the "Princeton way"....

they had to s l o w it down for a reason.[winking]

Because their coach saw the game that way. Those later Princeton teams were absolutely stacked with talent across the board. They could have played anyway they choose.

Just like hoops. "Slowing down" the game played right into their own hands.

Very true.

But not where I was going with my little joke.
