"Arms straight up" defense is much more effective with a 7'0" player than a 6'8" player. :)
Good luck this year. I hope Getty's can give you something. However, he is not athletic, isn't mobile and has terrible hands. Can't hit a wide open layup unguarded. He only played the time he did because he was in constant foul trouble. He can give you fouls and block some shots, but you can expect little to nothing on offense. If he gets fouled, which is rare since he doesn't know how to draw contact, he is a good FT shooter.
Could be that working in a slower paced offense will help, and he is a good passer. But he has no idea how to post, and no idea how to score in the post with the exception of a wide open dunk.
Just sayin', don't get your hopes up. Truly hope i'm wrong, but he was at UNCW 5 years and didn't look any better his last year than he did his first year.
I have read mixed reviews on your board. Some high, some low. I guess I was wrong in saying he had good hands. I saw some decent rebounds. I will take what he lacks in athleticism(hes a center), in exchange for being a good passer.
We are not looking for a full fledged start, just someone to let our other bigs take a breather for.

He's the third center and as the third center is very valuable to the team, even with his warts. You will see.
At the minimum, he'll give us five fouls and eat up space. That's more than we had last year when Lewis was on the bench.
Look, Getty's gets excited and will get the crowd in the game if he gets a dunk or blocks a shot. A lot of fans really liked him, because he's a likeable guy. I hope he does well in this system. I was interested in the school he transferred to and was wondering what the expectations were. I've followed the Seahawks closely for decades, and wanted to give your obviously engaged fans some perspective based on reality. Peace.
Well, we're pretty much expecting him to contribute in the 12-15 minute range along with two other centers. One is a 7-0 RS So who missed all of last season with an injury, and the other is a 6-10 RS So who missed his first year and part of last year with an injury. Both were somewhat foul prone when they did see game action.
When both were out last year, we really struggled with foul trouble for our bigs, and we gave up a ton of height each game... we had a 6-2 guy playing SF a lot of the time, and a 6-4 guy playing PF at times.
Gettys gives us another big body in the paint on defense, and the ability to absorb some foul trouble. It also allows our PFs to play at the 4, instead of having to switch down to the 5 when the bigs are on the bench.
Ideally, Gettys can give us about the same production that he did at UNCW... 15 min, 5 pts, 5 rbs, 1.4 blks, 3 PFs. That might be asking a lot given the step up in competition, but he should help us out a lot as a complementary piece to our other two bigs.
They didn't "miss" him on the pick and roll. Our PG's wouldn't give him the ball off the pick and roll because he had zero chance of catching the pass and finishing.
He sounds like most of the centers we've had over the years except for the part were he is a good free throw shooter.
Thanks for the analysis on him. Its always great getting an honest evaluation from someone who has watched a ton of his games. Please disregard some of our resident posters who will challenge what your saying because they won't allow you to say anything negative about an RU player.
If Gettys is able to give us 10 minutes a game, rebound and play some D, I think most here would be ok with that.
Sorry UNCWguy.......This also makes no sense. The team ran Pick and Rolls using a center who the PG's refused to pass the ball to because of his ZERO chance to do anything with it.....REALLY !!
it could be true, but if you can grab a board, you should be able to catch the ball.
It was a guard centered offense that ran a quick pace. Credit to their coach.
We will see what kind of hands he had. Nonetheless, he rolls well, and is aware of what is going on when it happens. If there are reasons he did not get the ball, so be it. Things like that will not change overnight.

Considering he's our third center and was a 25th-hour addition to the class, I'm looking for a few minutes a game, some fouls, and a big body for practice. Anything beyond that is gravy.

I'm not really sure what the UNCW fan is talking about with his hands. He mad many difficult catches today going full speed in traffic, but did struggle a bit finishing.
All in all...good get, kid has a great attitude from the outside looking in. Best of all...he wants to be here, and accepts that challenge. He will be a fan favorite, and easy to root for.

I felt that this thread really needed to be revisited after exchanging a few texts and messages with some diehard RU fans and non-RU fans, but basketball fans in general.
There are a lot of anxiety moments in trying to figure out what 2017-18 or 2018-19 will look like, but wanted to give CJ a huge shoutout for his efforts this year and to review how we landed this type of player.
A) Apparently he had other offers/interest from Purdue and Dayton before RU landed Gettys in very late August of 2016....
B) the reviews were mixed because of his stat line and it didn't get to become exciting until you saw the game tape of UNCWilmington and realized he had solid hands, decent touch and toughness.
C) CJ brought a very positive attitude and swagger to the RAC and helped changed the culture of the program....he earned his respect of the teammates and became a cult-like hero in what may be a forgettable season for some, but very rewarding from my vantage point.
I'm fully confident in this staff to find the pieces to retool the roster going forward....doesn't mean we will be certain recruits first choice or we will get the players we want the most to come to RU....but I think if we can land a Gettys this late in the game, anything is possible with a few months or a year under the belt and a clearer picture of what we are working with.
The staff can sell Gettys development on the recruiting trail....he earned his improvement, in a better league, played well and if you are a Power Forward or Center on the recruiting target list, I'm pretty certain that the staff is going to get the most out of your ability.....

I wish young Mr. Gettys all the best. Maybe he can get a sniff as a good locker-room guy on an NBA team? More likely he ends up overseas somewhere for a few years.. enjoying the heck out of anything he does end up doing, no doubt! All the best!
Just reading this scouting report really validates the job that Jay Young does with our bigs. CJ was a much better player than in this description and I attribute that to coaching. Thanks for coming to Rutgers and Good Luck CJ!
Looking back at the UNCW fan's review, he was partially right (not athletic, good FT shooter, will be a fan favorite) . Apparently, CJ learned an offensive game in just a couple of months with this staff. He was a God-send... Hopefully the staff is looking out for the next guy (assuming someone transfers out).
CJ averaged 7.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in B1G games this year. With a few exceptions, he played decent to good defense against other centers in the league.
Unless you are the Purdue, Iowa or Wisconsin centers.....that's pretty good.
