Rutgers Student Assembly votes to diversify the mascot- Mugrat?

some of these decisions should be approved by the alumni community. current student body shouldn't be making these decisions on their own. the school is far bigger than the current student body.

Though, interestingly, it was the student body -- and not the alumni -- who decided to moniker Rutgers sports teams as the Scarlet Knights in the first place.

well. looks like it's time to put some structure around it then.
the mascot is primarily used for sports, therefore, i think the power to change something like this should lie with the Committee on Intercollegiate Athletic.

The knight itself is a caricature,,,,any attempt to diversify it, will result in the mockery, generalization and flat out racist use of stereotypes....Turn the Knight black, and then there will be issue with the color applied and the face features...folks are going to think he is either tanned or Latino....third gender? How the hell you represent this without falling for extremes...

Poor kids. I guess we were all like them at one point....

From my understanding they don't want to change the actual Knight, they want to give him a small supporting cast. In the form of 2-3 students of different genders/ethnicities probably dressed in chainmail/armour ect. So basically taking 2 members of the cheerleading squad and dressing them up in medieval times costumes and having them roam around the stadium im guessing.

Honestly this is the ONLY way this could work because if they actually attempt to make giant headed cartoonish caricature costumes for different ethnicities, then we're in for yet another classic Rutgers PR nightmare.

this is such a bad idea. Are we going to create a new mascot every time time a kid from a different country applies here. Do we need an Indian mascot, what about if an Aborigine enrolls here, or some remote Amazon tribe, are we gonna stick a bone through its nose.

Tired of everybody afraid to take a stand and scared to death of being offensive. There is nothing offensive about the mascot the way it is.

Another reason Rutgers continues to be the laughing stock of intercollegiate athletics. These little d-bags need to go die with their idiotic ideas for inclusion.

Perfect timing. As soon as the shame and embarassment from the multiple faux scandals and mismanagement was starting to fade. They give us this complete nonsense.

If I interviewed a rutgers student, I think I would ask them if they wasted part of their college years on this? It would be all I needed to know........

If I interviewed someone who posts on these boards, I think I would ask them if they wasted any of their posts whining about the possibly misplaced idealism of college students. It would be all I needed to know...

Dark skinned, transgendered, homosexual, Muslim should check all their boxes.
Maybe somewhere there is computer software that could take a family portrait of the Kardashian's and jumble it all up into one new mascot. That should get it done.

It would have a big ass.
