Rutgers Track and Field in Big Ten Championships

Thanks for the update. Was watching the Women’s 800 and lost the stream as Johnson was making her move at around 600 meters. Great performance by her. Do you know if Carlson’s best time of 4:31 coming into this meet was the fastest this season in the B1G?
Yes. Coming into the meet Alexandra led the B1G with her 4:31.51, and Olivia Howell, who beat Alexandra in the mile today, had the second best performance coming into the meet with a 4:33.77.

Alexandra also had the best time in the conference this season in the 3000m race, while Olivia Howell has been more of an 800-mile specialist, where she had the second best conference performance in each of those events coming into the championships.

The women's 3000 is coming up in a few minutes. Alexandra is entered, and barring a scratch, it'll be interesting to see how the earlier mile affects her. Justin Cornetta finished 6th in the men's mile earlier today, but was a "Did Not Finish" in the 3000 that just concluded. Many of the top B1G 3000m runners are running the women's 3000 fresh Hopefully Alexandra will still have plenty in the tank.. She's run over 4 seconds faster than anyone else in the B1G so far this season.

In the final men's event of the championships, RU was unable to score points in the 4x400, so the men finish the meet in 10th place in the 11 team field, 2 points ahead of Illinois who gained ground in the final event by winning the 4x4. Wisconsin and Nebraska finished 1-2 in the team standings, scoring 110 and 103 points respectively.

The RU women didn't score in the final few events, including the shot put, triple jump, and 4x400, so the women finished 9th in the 13 team field with 45 points. Michigan won the women's meet with 109 points, with Ohio State second with 90.

Looking forward to our men and women scoring even more points next year, and finishing a little higher in the team standings... Props to all the RU athletes who competed, and special congratulations to our five athletes who won a B1G championship and to all the others who scored points in the meet.

It looks like 6 of the 8 medals (top 3) for RU came from underclassmen… very bright future ahead!
RU is making progress and I agree that the future of the program looks good. We lose a few studs, especially on the men's side, but the team should be fine.. They need a little more depth which hopefully will come soon...

Only the championship Michigan team on the women's side and the top 2 teams on the men's side (Wisconsin and Nebraska) won more events at the meet than the Rutgers teams did, and most teams won less. (And speaking of depth, in just the 3000m and 5000m events alone, the Wisconsin men scored a combined 47 points. They also won the mile for a total of 57 points in the 3 individual distance events, and also finished second in the DMR for a combined 65 points in 4 distance events...)

It was an enjoyable B1G championships that included some pleasant surprises... Looking forward to our RU athletes competing at the IC4A/ECAC Champs next weekend, and then NCAA's the weekend after that. And really looking forward to the outdoor season too... Many thanks to Tango Two for starting the thread and for posting all the links and great photos.

Regarding the NCAA's, the top 16 in each event on the national TFRRS season performance list qualify for NCAA's. Many athletes have one more meet next weekend to try to get into the top 16 to qualify and bump others out.

Currently, Chloe Timberg is #5 in the pole vault, Alexandra Carlson is #6 in the mile and #15 in the 3000. Other RU women who are currently ranked in the top 50 nationally include Kristina Tossas, #20 in long jump, Dennisha Page, #25 at 60m, Celine Brown #29 in long jump, Kassidy Johnson, #31 at 800m, and Jasmine Van Note, #40 in the shot put.

On the men's side, Sincere Robinson is currently ranked #14 in the long jump. Not sure what the status of A'nan Bridgett is, but he's ranked 12th on the national list. Other RU men who are currently ranked in the top 50 include Nadale Buntin, currently ranked #27 in the 200, and Chris Serrao, #30 in the 60 hurdles.

Go RU.

EDIT TO CORRECT ABOVE ERROR: The NCAA championships qualifiers were announced on February 28th, so any performances after that won't affect the championship qualifying.

Both our men and our women are improving little by little under our present coaching staff. We are heading in the right direction. As a former cross country and track coach in high school for 39 years I am so happy for this improvement. I will be even happier if we can add a few more real quality cross country and distance runners to the programs.

Yes, both seems to be on a slow but steady upswing. Where’d you coach, if you don’t mind my asking? Four decades is a hell of a run.

Here are some examples of coaching and development. For the 2019-2020 indoor season Adam Hunt has a PB in the 35lb WT of 57'8 1/2 and Kyle Lipscomb had a PB of 48'4 1/2. This season Lipscomb had a PB of 63'4 3/4 and Hunt set a school record of 65'11 3/4.
