Didnt see this posted anywhere, but it was mentioned in an article in The Athletic that Alabama AD Mal Moore met with Schiano and RichRod when it looked like they werent going to get Saban.

The search started in earnest in New York, where a variety of coaches were in town for the National Football Foundation dinner. There Moore met with Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano and West Virginia’s Rodriguez.
The article is behind a paywall but is a cool read

The alabama fan base would have murdered Moore if they hired Schiano back then.
He just won every coach of the year award there is! He was the most sought after young coach out there at the time.
Man, people just love ripping on Schiano any chance they get!

I’m actually not ripping Greg at all, just pointing out that Bama fans would have been underwhelmed with their superiority complex. Perhaps less so back then with some of those bad seasons.

Would have been interesting to see how that played out. Coaching Alabama's talent certainly revived Flood's career

Only if there was someone from the Bear Tree who was an alternative. Suspicion of the Yankee would have been muted by the awards and time at Miami. But at the first 7-5 season, sayonara

Schiano probably would have won 8 national titles at alabama by now . Saban has only won 6 there
You beat me to it. Insert any up and coming coach into Alabama with their tradition, reputation, financial backing and infinite bagmen, and the chance of success would be likely. Then this entire board would ave erupted that Greg was poached from us..

Ummm …I was joking . That place was struggling for years until saban got there . I don’t think Greg would have had the success there that saban has had . No one would have . It’s the greatest run of all time . And saban also won an NC at another school

As I hit the enter button, I was trying to recall what was going on there prior to Saban but obviously didnt look or remember. Whoops!!

Edit: the board here still would have erupted if Greg had success in Alabama.

UA fans would have stormed the field for the opposite reason, to chase him out of town after bad losses and the awful Wild Tide package.

He’d have changed ‘Roll Tide’ to ‘Keep Surfin’.

Cringe.

If this isn't Schiano football I don't know what is. Special attention to the 1:32 mark 😂 😂

Yes, the Wildcat is Schiano’s favorite ever since QB Sanu with Savage only rotating on the usual 3rd and 9. Throwback football with the 1869 playbook.

That’s the first question he asks OCs in interviews. “Who would you have as our WildKnight QB?”

actually, that might be a question a lot of college HCs ask.
Seems like the Wildcat is being used by other college tears and Greg might have helped make it popular.

Gs crushed w miami talent at un

would have done just fine at tenn and bama.
we are Year 3 after ash .. and flood talent reduction post gs last class. The few vocal posters here need some foundational background and football knowledge as they are revealing great ignorance

I read that article when it was published. He actually hired Rich Rod at one point but he backed up which pushed him back to his original big game target Saban. I did not get the sense from the article that Schiano was ever close to being offered the job.

Yankee stay home
Well.. that is what happened at Tennessee. You see.. SCHIANO ends in a vowel.

Saban is from West Virginia... kinda saddles that "Yankee" line a bit, despite playing at Kent State and coaching in the north before LSU took him. But by the time he was hired by Bama.. he had a national championship at LSU and was officially blessed as an SEC coach and winner.

Schiano losing out on Bama job to Saban is no real defeat.. that resume was undeniable.. and they paid up for Saban despite Sabana having essentially failed with the Dolphins..

You can thank the late Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano for the original resurgence of the Wildcat. After the Dolphins demolished the Patriots with it, everyone started doing it.

I am a GS fan. But Ohio State showed that some star athletes do not want to be part of a disciplined assignment defense. My take is they have relied on superior athleticism to get teh job done at every level and buck at that kind of coaching (from anyone who isn't a known superstar coach, at least). Saban had won a NC... he has more "hand" in telling players what to do. Urban Meyer also.

Schiano actually coaching the Vols or Bama back then.. I dunno. He needs the players to follow his lead to execute his D and special teams stuff. Of course, the Vols NOW have been humbled in recent years. I'd bet the current coach has players more willing to be coached. They certainly played like a team vs Bama.

Saban grew up in West Va. , went to school in Ohio and established his coaching career in the upper Midwest. Not exactly a deep south guy. I don’t think those old line cultural barriers exist if they think the coach can win. There was no revolt at LSU when they hired Brian Kelly. An Irish Catholic from Boston coaching down on the Bayou.

Has there ever been a coach more lionized and less successful? All hype no performance ? Alabama ? Michigan ? Miami ? Did he almost get the Yankees job before Boone ? Or was it RealMadrid ? Was it the Celtics ?

I have no doubt he can lead Rutgers to a third place Big10 finish if OSU, UM, PSU leave…just like he did in the BigEast when the top 3 left for the ACC. Until that happens, his ceiling is 6-7 wins and the Dec. 15th Sympathy Bowl in Kalamazoo.

Is sad how many people think he’ll win here.

We are rutgers. We have been the dregs of the BIG . We are not gonna date the prom Queen. But we can get actually get a date to the prom. Winning here is steady 7 and 8 win seasons. Schiano can achieve this .

Wow, sad.

My reaction to fans like this is don’t return to stadium when we’re bowling. It’s very clear you aren’t there now. You would have no football program to talk about had Schiano never got here. Your time is better spent on another team, board, whatever.

Sure, a great year if you disregard context. I know I’m repeating myself but the three teams he never beat all left by then and even still he only finished third. Good story, yes, but does mean he’s a good coach? Not always. Do yourself a favor and look up the 1998 Big East Coach of the Year.

Well the real world, not the Schiano haters universe, disagrees with your interpretation. Besides Bama he was offered the Head Coaching job at Miami and Michigan. Reality trumps hatred.

But it shouldn’t ever be 14th place in the 14-team B1G.

Did you look up that ‘98 COY?

Bama didn’t have a superiority complex then. Shula had just gone 10-23 and their prior coach left them to go to Texas A&M.

Often there's this false impression, not just for Alabama but others as well, that the way things are now have always been like this in the past or the way things are now will always be like this in the future. Things change both towards the positive and negative.
