This idea works best for conference play but can be used for OOC and bowl qualifying as well. This would also work in basketball where there are more games and no divisions so the OT games and points can make a big difference in conf tourney seeds.
Using points rules:
- win in regulation and get 3 points
- win in OT and get 2 points
- lose in OT and get 1 point
FCS game exceptions
- win is 2 points
- win in OT is 1 point
- lose in OT is 0 points
This past weekend:
- ND lost in OT
- Wisconsin won
- Tennessee won in OT
For conference play this matters:
(hypothetical example)
- Rutgers is 3-5 with 2 OT losses (11 points)
- Maryland is 4-4 with 1 OT win (11 points)
- PSU is 4-4 with 2 OT wins (10 points)
For bowl selections the 2 teams with more points would get the better bowls
For qualifying for bowls (I would suggest 17 points):
- current 6 wins rule with no OT games (18 points)
- 5 wins with 2 OT losses (17 points)
- 6 wins with 1 OT win (17 points)
