This idea works best for conference play but can be used for OOC and bowl qualifying as well. This would also work in basketball where there are more games and no divisions so the OT games and points can make a big difference in conf tourney seeds.

Using points rules:
- win in regulation and get 3 points
- win in OT and get 2 points
- lose in OT and get 1 point

FCS game exceptions
- win is 2 points
- win in OT is 1 point
- lose in OT is 0 points

This past weekend:
- ND lost in OT
- Wisconsin won
- Tennessee won in OT

For conference play this matters:
(hypothetical example)
- Rutgers is 3-5 with 2 OT losses (11 points)
- Maryland is 4-4 with 1 OT win (11 points)
- PSU is 4-4 with 2 OT wins (10 points)
For bowl selections the 2 teams with more points would get the better bowls

For qualifying for bowls (I would suggest 17 points):
- current 6 wins rule with no OT games (18 points)
- 5 wins with 2 OT losses (17 points)
- 6 wins with 1 OT win (17 points)

A point system is fine but no way should two losses be worth more than one win. The ultimate goal is to win the game, not to get a tie.

Perhaps 4 for a win, 3 for over time win and 1 for overtime loss.

Well I look at a few games:
- The ND OT loss is not as bad as the KS St or USC loss so they should not be penalized the same way,.
- The Tenn OT win over App St should not be rewarded the same way as Baylor's win or even Washington's win.

A team that wins a game within 60 mins should be rewarded more than a team in OT. the same holds true for a team who finds a way to pull out a tie and loses in OT.

The NHL and MLS use point systems. You see they make a big difference sometimes.
In the NHL Detroit and Boston both had 93 points. Boston had more wins but less regulation wins, Detroit made the playoffs and Boston did not.

High School is fine when you have no idea what is going on across the state.

College and Pro - keep this cr*p out of here. Win your conference you go. Plain and simple. College just needs to wait for the B12 to die. As for the pro's, "Oh, you won 11 games but miss the playoffs because you didn't win your west coast conference and Jets won theirs at 8-8? Too bad. Win your conference or petition to move out of yours."

Same for the SEC when they cry, "We should have two teams in!" Too bad, petition to join the ACC if you think you have it too hard.

Stop whining losers.
