Me, I was in Middlesex CC (transferred to RU in '90) at the time so I had no real school love for RU although I knew more than likely I'd be transferring there. I was big time rooting for SH. It was a Jersey thing for me. Loved that team with the dude from Australia (forget his name). I remember stopping at a bar in Sayreville called the Water Tower( no longer there) after working the Twilight shift at UPS to take in the game against Michigan. Very disappointed to see SH lose.

Was rooting against seton hall. Didn't like that they went and basically got an austrialian pro in gaze. Not sure why the shu kid rushed the shot on the final posession .
That was a great game with rumeal Robinson knocking down those free throws. Although , I do think seton hall got jobbed on that call.

Don't hate the Hall, so will root for them as long as it doesn't hurt Rutgers.
As for their winning hurting Rutgers recruiting, cross that bridge when RU starts winning and Pikiell starts bringing RU to the NCAAs.
Once that happens, no worries about the Hall getting HS talent RU wants ( except for the HS players that are going to go to a Catholic school anyways).

Rooting for them. Grew up in West Orange and my father grew up in South Orange - so there was definitely a regional draw to support them. It was also before I was thinking about colleges, and I probably hadn't even heard of Rutgers at that point.

My father was a hall grad both undergrad and law school so i was pulling for the hall. I didnt get to rutgers until 1995. Only time in my life that i saw my father cry. Lol

A good friend from work, who was at SHU in undergrad days when he thought he would become a priest (joined the Navy; was on a sub, and came to NSA) was down on that team because of Gaze. Watched RU lose in 76 at his place, and was prepared to root for SHU if he had been interested, but he said he didn't like mercenaries and really stuck to his guns.

I was rooting for SHU that night. They are from NJ but thinking back Gaze arrived several weeks late to SHU in the fall semester, Than in the spring he left to return to Australia like a day or two after the loss. What a complete joke that was. The guy was not a student at all. He was not even trying to make it look like he was a student.

Against. Hard to imagine a scenario where I would be rooting for them. At best indifference.

Neither. In 1989, Seton Hall wasn't on my radar as a team I had either positive or negative interest in. It could have been Wichita State for all the difference it made to me.

I was at Middlesex CC that year also and was rooting for Seton Hall.

Was rooting for Seton Hall. Had season tickets and they were a pleasure to watch those years. Hoping that Coach Pikiell can get us to be at as good if not better than those Seton Hall teams those couple of years.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Man, just as good as being 3 seconds away from a national title or even better ! I may take that!

Definitely rooted for them in that game. It was a Jersey thing for me also. Was rooting for them in the tourney this year too.

Yes, they got robbed.

Yes, the Gaze issue was controversial that year.

Was rooting against SHU, because they should never have been in the Big East. Was supposed to be us. If they played in a final against Michigan today, I'd still root against SHU, even though I despise Michigan.

For...can never root for Michigan...(except on very specific ocassions)

Rooting big time for the Hall. Growing up nearby my friends from my HS basketball teams used to go to Walsh in '84 and '85. The Dan Calandrillo era at SHU. Ewing, Mullin, Pearl, Berry, Pinckney, etc., etc. Saw everyone at Walsh.

Knowing full well that we would be in the B1G I was rooting against the Hall.

For. Was a Big East hoops fan. Went to a lot of SHU games before RU got the invite. SHU had some great teams, played great defense.

100% rooting against the Hall.

That was not a heavy Jersey team...some but not heavy and Gaze...don't get me started.

I did not want the 93 team to win that got upset early...but that was a Jersey team and I hoped it represented well...just ran out of gas.

Im surprised that this has been a reasonable post. The vitriol between our fans was legendary.

Against. SHU was what RU wasn't and was in our way recruiting-wise. Was also a big BE fan, but preferred Georgetown, so SHU had 2 strikes right there. Finally, I tended to root for Mich at the time among the big time state U's and thought Glenn RIce an outright assassin from outside.

Two wrongs don't make a right, but Steve Fisher was known to illegally pay street agents for his recruits. Several of Michigan's NCAA Tournament appearances were invalidated, including the 1992-3 appearances. PJ just evened things up a little by renting Gaze for a year.

Was rooting for the Hall, my favorite uncle who went to seton hall law school was a long time season ticker holder, and took me to several games. He had 4 boys, but they all hated sports. He passed away in 1988, so he didn't get to see the game, so I took up his cause and rooted for them. I knew Gaze was a one and doner, but had to stay true to my uncle.

I was already a Rutgers fan, but had lost touch with BB somewhat after graduating in 1980, and was just getting into it again.

Soon enough, I learned to not like Seton Hall, and that has lasted ever since.
