"Mabel Smith Douglass disappeared on September 21, 1933 when she was rowing on Lake Placid in upstate New York and was never seen alive again. Her capsized boat was found and the accepted explanation is that she committed suicide. Her body would be discovered by scuba divers in 1963. Mabel Smith Douglass was born on February 11, 1877 in Jersey City, New Jersey.and was the first dean of the New Jersey College for Women when it opened in 1918. The New Jersey College for Women was renamed in her honor to Douglass College in 1955."
