I guess they’ll be needed during the season, like SC will, and that all of a sudden v UW he became a solid enough player, in what, ten days, to hold his own against a Top Ten team.

It wasn't an "all of a sudden", and I don't think anyone is claiming that it was. Carter/Doucoure were clearly seeing far fewer minutes than Doorson/Johnson, and there was certainly some reason for that. The easiest answer is that Pike felt those two players gave us the best chance of winning in the games where they saw the lion's share of the time, which was likely based on who stood out in practice.

Carter played well in limited minutes against MSU when there was foul trouble, and was rewarded with more minutes against Wisconsin - and rose to that opportunity. Which is great for him. I really believe with Pike that minutes are earned - and his play looks like it's going to earn him more minutes. There's tough competition for minutes, especially in the post, as our "fives" are usually seeing only about 35-37 min a game. I think that competition is going to make all of them better - as they say, "steel sharpens steel". Look forward to seeing all of our bigs develop as the year progresses.

Chopping, we had three thirty-point wins v weak opponents. It couldn’t have been about giving us the best chance to win.

For what it's worth, Shaq Carter is officially ahead of Mamadou Dourcore per the depth chart. Not that this is breaking news per the game / minute results yesterday

The minutes he did see were late in those three games after they became blowouts. In the more competitive games, Pike stuck with Doorson/Johnson in the middle.

He finally saw some more time against MSU when Doorson/Johnson got into foul trouble against Ward, and he made the most of it - which turned into more minutes. As said above, it looks like he's now at least the #3 option, and may be becoming the #2 option depending on situation. He seems to have played his way into more minutes, and that's great. Competition among the bigs will only make them better.

Rewarding players with more minutes when they earn it with their play is the best way to motivate the non starters to keep working hard and be ready for their chance to play. It also keeps starters motivated to not become complacent and expect the same minutes regardless of their play. Competition at every spot on the court this year. Isn't it glorious?
