Shooters

Provide an example
Of what? I think it's just common sense that the guys we have coming in are much better shooters than the guys we have going out.

There's no comparison between a Mathis and Williams, and I think Shaq is far and away an upgrade over freeman. You add kiss and harper on top of that.

I am not sure I get why some want to make this offensive problem more complex than it is. If we get open looks whether from 3 or 2, and we struggle to make them with any sort of consistency, then we are a poor shooting team. No one is expecting one and done caliber players, but it remains very obvious that having a player or two who can fairly consistently knock down open jump shot will result in an improved overall offense and complement the current group whose offensives strengths would be best served by slashing opportunities and put backs. Baker maybe someone who can do it but I think Thiam will continue to struggle with getting his shot off and thus I would like to see him gain strength and take it the hoop. Everyone else seems too erratic.

We don't know about the guys coming in here until they do it game in and game out against B1G opponents when the lights turn on.

Been saying the same thing for years, RU will not have a winning B-Ball program until they recruit players who can SHOOT THE BALL.
In other words, RU needs to recruit better. Everyone is trying to get shooters. Recruiting is a wildly competitive endeavor, and RU loses those battles—or can’t even get into the battles—way too often..

I'm very high on Kiss. From what I've been told the staff likes/liked Kiss better than Gio before the season started. I think he gives us a BIG boost next year.

I hope you and the staff are right. However our history with transfers is littered with positive practice reports only to be disappointed. Hopefully Pike is different but I am not going to count on him as a major contributor until he shows it against other teams.

He has shown it against other teams.. His freshman year.

This kind of post can set fans up for disaster. Mathis has some comparisons to williams, and is not a lights out shooter. Kiss will help a lot, but is also seen to not be s lights out shooter.

No half court offensive system can compensate for not being able to shoot the ball. The only way to compensate for bad shooting is with an emphasis on scoring in transition.

The sets we run are the next best thing ...we really have good spacing to create space ...which is near impossible considering how easy it is for teams to cheat off the perimeter to help ....

Pike is coaching this teams offense to the max capability. He just can’t make them make the makable shots at a high enough percentage ...it’s what we have for a roster ...for now

Fans can expect that

Kiss- I know people that played basketball with him in NYC. They said every game he was easily the most competitive person on the court. You can expect him to play with a chip on his shoulder. I think his shooting will improve with this off year. At Quinn, he was the best player on a bad team. For that reason, his usage was very high. Coming here, he will now have the chance to get better looks, thus I expect a higher percentage. Quality, not quantity. Both parents are immigrants to the USA. He plays with a large amount of pride. I spoke with him at a football game. Very nice kid.

Mathis- he will help as a rebounding guard right off the bat. He takes the game personally. He will help as a slasher, driver. He will defend and do what the coaches ask of him daily. The guard situation will be tight next year. Especially if Sanders is here.

Harper- Teams will have to defend him closely when he gets time. They won't sag. There will not be a ton of time at his position with the amount of guards. Especially if Sanders is here.

Carter- 5 points,5 rebounds per game without turning the ball over. He will not be taking any three point shots.

These are just some reasonable things to look out for. Bare minimums.

If Sanders is here, the team looks formidable to compete with at least 8 teams in the big ten every night. Compete and win. If he is here, and spends the whole summer on the banks, things could get interesting come March.

I still have a ton of faith in Pikiell.

If you believe in the rankings system, Mathis is ranked way higher than Mike Williams was. That said, Williams is the heart and soul of this team, in my opinion.

For the most part there are no shooters, at least consistent shooters, now. So how do you know the team two years from now will have no shooters?

I am saying in 2 years he hasn't recruited good shooters. At least they haven't shown themselves as capable shooters YET

They are similar players in a lot of aspects. Mathis is a driver in hs, Williams was a shooter. Mathis more athletic, but by no means a sanders. More on the level of baker athletically.

You just told me not how they are similar but how they are different.

Lol, yes I noted differences. In terms of what you said as being the heart and soul of the team, they are very similar. Both go outside of their realms of what their positions demand. Both play with a ton of heart.

They are different in what they possess/ed in HS. Williams was a great shooter, but not athletic and didn't always get to the rim.

Mathis is a great slasher, deceptively athletic, and really tries to get to basket with a level of force. He is not noted as being a great shooter from range.

On the contrary, Harper Jr is the best shooter in the class. From all three levels. 3, mid, and next to the rim.

Mathis will be a very nice replacement for what Mike Williams has given the program in the past four years. He plays with heart, is humble, and does the small stuff you need to build a program.

Steve Pikiell did a great job with all of next years recruits, including Kiss. All play with a chip on their shoulder, and have an edge to them. Traits critical to a building program. Also, all possess high character.

I've always been confused by Mike Williams shooting. We were told Williams was a great shooter in high school. How does a great shooter turn into a terrible shooter in college?

Much higher level of competition and thus a of confidence. As most NBA shooting gurus will say, lack of confidence is a major issue with poor shooting. Williams has never shot better than 31% from 3 during his career at Rutgers. And it’s never improved in the last 3 years and in fact has worsened.

I dont think players get enough credit for this level of skill. The next jump even more. Williams was a set shooter in hs. Off the dribble is a lot more effective in college as you dont get that space and time in college fames. Williams is still more of a set shooter.

This is what I thought the issue was. We see this with Thiam now. Give him space and time and he shoots lights out.

True but good news for Thiam & Baker is that they have more height and time to improve their shooting than Williams. Both Jalen Brunson & Mikal Bridges shot about the same from 3 as Thiam & Baker during their sophomore seasons & improved greatly now in their junior years.

So I think they’ll both keep improving with their shooting, and adding better shooters will also help.

You guys are going to like Mathis game ....a lot

Sanders/baker/Mathis at the 1,2, and 3 spot next year looks very good to me

Mulchay to replace sanders in the class of 2019?

Would be huge

My friend is one of their coaches at Nova. I look forward to meeting them in a few weeks after their game

Hopefully. Thiams got the confidence and dedication. He wants to get there. My brother noticed on the bench one game how hard Thiam is on himself. To me, his highest level of play will be achieved next year. Not s mattr of if, but when.

So you already know that next years recruits can't shoot? We know we are a poor shooting team now but everything I have read, if only in this thread, is that Kiss, Harper, and Mathis are better shooters than we have now. So next year we should have better shooters. Especially with Baker, and Eugene and Thiam all getting more experience the shooting should improve. So why do you think in two years we will have no shooters. All it takes to change the scenario is one shooter. This isn't football where you need a lot of guys to change the narrative. Next years class is done but the year after is still open. Hard to say that we will have no shooters in two years.

I agree that next is the big year for Thiam if he keeps improving. Right now he shoots a significantly better percentage from 3 than MSU’s Miles Bridges, and look at the difference in talent between MSU and Rutgers.

I think Thiam is at 38 plus % at this time. That is pretty good. Kiss I think made like 5 threes against SHU and Gonzaga last year. There are games he was really hot from three. I assume other teams really focused on him as the season went on. I think Baker is 32-33 % at this time. If Harper can hit 33% we just might be better shooting from the outside next season. It remains to be seen what happens. I think Carter will do a little better than 5 rebounds a game. As a freshman I think he got like 8.7 rpg and only played 20 mpg as his team was #2 in the country and played a lot of guys.
