Shooters

I dont think players get enough credit for this level of skill. The next jump even more. Williams was a set shooter in hs. Off the dribble is a lot more effective in college as you dont get that space and time in college fames. Williams is still more of a set shooter.

You get plenty of opportunities with either exceptional PG play or ball movement. We’ve seen the latter on occasion, but the former has been lacking. Gio looks like a similar experiment to something we’ve tried many times- convert a h.s. scorer into a college lead/PG. I find it exasperating and difficult to understand why this is necessary in the tri-state area where there are so many talented *true* PGs- by this I mean pass-first floor generals.

Here is a list since our last tourney appearance (and arguably our last “lead guard” who fulfilled this promise, Earl Duncan. He could score but more to the point led the team- there was no question the play started with him. I guess it also helps he played with Keith Hughes and Steve Worthy both of whom were reliable scoring threats and also in the A-10:

Damon Santiago
Al Karner
Pete Marcotte. *true* PG
Geoff Billett
Earl Johnson
Todd Billett
Mike Sherrod
Juel Wiggan *true* PG
Marquise Webb
Anthony Farmer
Corey Chandler
James Beatty *true* PG
Mike Coburn
Jerome Seagars. *true* PG
Myles Mack
Corey Sanders
Nigel Johnson
Gio Baker

I think it will be very interesting to see how the program takes shape. Both Pikell & Knight were *true* PGs - one would think they appreciate the value and can make the pitch.

The game has changed even since Douby left. People here criticize Thiam yet he shoots 39% from 3. Doubt shot 40%, though admittedly he was impressive because he was often double teamed.

Neither would rank among leaders in the Big Ten- it seems the sharpshooting specialist is here for the foreseeable future, but Thiam looks like the kind of player Calhoun built his HoF career around. Long, athletic three who can shoot and the rest of the team is guys who just get after it 100%.

Sanders needs to realize his best path forward to achieving his goals is commit to his present- every single day. He seems to play to the level of competition which should make for some more fun moments this season. I would love for him to average more dunks than 3’s because that is the kind of mentality this entire team needs to get the open looks necessary to improve % on long range shooting.

Great points, and history. I agree with what you say about Sanders. He plays a different game against different opponents.

When you mention Baker, I do think that he is a natural passer, student of the game. It is not the Carrington experiment, or Isiah Whitehead. Baker is naturally knows the game better than both those players. I agree though that is very hard to take a shooting guard, and then transfer him to a point guard. Trying to get a scorer to become a distributor is very hard for the basketball players psyche.

In todays game, you see less pure pg's. Why? Because the game is becoming so offensively distinguished that you need five players who can effectively score the ball. If you are just a distributor, you will be picked apart for that. Defenses will make you shoot more, or drive more. If you have a guard who can give you 10 pts, and 4 assist a game, I consider that a rarity. That is what I am asking for with how the game is trending. That is what Baker gives the program.

Baker is impressive and definitely sees the floor pretty well. I think he & Eugene in particular seem to passing- and that’s a good thing.

I’m very curious to see how he develops during conference play.

Definitely. Baker and Omoyuri do seem to have that ability, which bodes well for the program.

It will be fun to watch. Overall, he is still a freshman, so I am not expecting perfection. I plan on seeing some good nights from him.

I hope Doucoure shows something. At this point, I thought we would see more as fans. Without him contributing with rebounds, the team could struggle. It is a task to say the team must rebound in commission, but that is what needs to happen.

Sa, Doorson, and Doucoure are three players that get minutes, but have provided their team with very little in that regard in a consistent manner. One of them has to step up for the team to win a couple games. Eugene and Freeman cannot do it all.

The sets we run are the next best thing ...we really have good spacing to create space ...which is near impossible considering how easy it is for teams to cheat off the perimeter to help ....

Pike is coaching this teams offense to the max capability. He just can’t make them make the makable shots at a high enough percentage ...it’s what we have for a roster ...for now
And so he has to recruit players, many of them, who can make shots. That's where the rubber will meet the road. Or it won't. We still have to find out whether Pike can regularly recruit enough players. Some hits so far. Some misses. Time will tell.

time and momentum are on his side. this man wont be forced out..he has a minimum of 5-6 years (personally i think its more the latter). meanwhile, we have the practice facility going up and the program is showing signs of life that are being noticed by recruits. Guys like bullock..he HAD to take him. he was trying to fill a class and there were slim pickings. As far as souf..its a two year gamble. it didnt work..who cares. he was smart enough to make that gamble on a two year player vs a four year one.

We lack shooting ability and IQ

We lack shooters, yes. But you can't discount the IQ shown in Seton Hall, MSU, FSU. Too many of us are looking at 2 very disappointing games and making sweeping statements. This is likely to be a bit of a roller coaster this year and these two games were the downswings. There have been highs too.

It’s not a sweeping statement. Just because we beat several cupcakes on our schedule, it doesn’t mean that we showed good IQ in those games.
