I once said they are a one-man show. But watching them play a very good Oregon team tonight I think Powell makes them elite, but they have a very good supporting cast. Their other guards can shoot and defend and their big men are huge, even if Sandro M. is the only highly skilled one. I’d be shocked if we hang with them at the RAC. I don’t know what Jerry Carino is smoking unless he’s just sandbagging for the Hall.

RU can play with most teams so I'm not going to discount the possibility of a good game. But how do you keep Powell from drilling a 3 whenever they need a basket... I watched them play MSU and I don't think they lose that game if Powell weren't in his first game back from injury.

Should have stopped there. As soon as Powell went cold, the team fell apart. If we defend Powell well, they won't beat us.
That’s a big if. He is a fantastic player that will give us tremendous trouble. Should be another barn burner.

I think SHU is streaky.....It's still TBD from what I can see on TV.

If Powell continues to trend at almost 40 to 50% of their scoring and shot attempts, I think you have to give Powell as many tough shots as he's willing to take and control the other players.

I dont see how SHU is going to consistently beat teams unless their 2nd and 3rd options get 12 to 15 points. Powell will get 30 regardless, cant let the remaining guys get the other 50 points...keep the rest to 40 and you have a chance.

Problem is willard is their coach, and hes not a good one. They need to play tyrese samuel more, that kids a player.

We don't match up well with them. They just have too many quality players. It'll be a moral victory if we stay within ten points.

People said the same thing 2 years ago.
Rutgers had a go to scorer in Sanders who won the game with key baskets. This season no go scorer and more of a who is hot for that particular game approach. Its too soon to tell if that approach will work against higher level competition like Seton Hall.It didn't work last year against St.Johns which was a embarrassing loss at the RAC.

I think Mathis, Young and McConnell will all get turns in guarding Powell. He is very special but we need to make him really work and wear him down to have any chance to beat SHU. I don't think we will risk Geo guarding him.

I think the key to the game is whether our bigs can stay out of foul trouble. Seton hall is long and athletic
and will murder us if Johnson and carter are sitting with two fouls each in the first half.

I copied the following, from my own post on the other SHU thread, which seems appropriate here:

Play aggressive D on Powell and go for steals until we have 6 fouls to start each half. Get the ball out of his hands. Force other guys to beat you.

Trap their ball-handlers until they break the press.

Force Powell to drive inside and earn his points in the paint. Double-team him if necessary.

Take it to the hole and draw fouls on their bigs. Always pump fake once to get those giants to leave their feet hungry for a block, the lean in, draw a foul and get the shot up.

Make your foul shots.

BillyC80, I never copied anything from you. I read your post on the other SHU-Oregon thread. You never mentioned anyone by name who will be guarding Powell. I have watched RU since 1971 for 48 years. I attend every home game and several road games each year. I attend practice usually once a week. I know our team very well. I have my own thoughts. I don't copy from anyone.

Knights1212, my “copied” comment was to point out that I was copying my own post as a compliment/response to yours, I was in no way suggesting you copied me. I like your posts and think they are some of the most insightful on here. Sorry for the ambiguity in the way I worded that introductory sentence. If you look again above, I edited that intro for clarity. Happy Thanksgiving and hope to read more of your comments this weekend...

It’s harder to defend a team when you don’t know who the top scorers will be. Rutgers just needs at least 2 guys to have not scoring games and they can win. That and a raucous crowd

No problem BillyC80. Thank you. I will be at the game today with my son. I hope the kids can play well. Games around Thanksgiving and the holiday December break are always worrisome after some of the players go home for a break. I was glad to read that Ron Harper was bringing Myles, Geo and Montez home for Thanksgiving to enjoy his mom's cooking. Hopefully everyone is back on time and are well focused. I remember Corey was late at least twice after the December break. The Boston University game was a real struggle last year and in 2017 we lost to Stony Brook and Hartford after defeating SHU.

I think Caleb needs to somehow not let the zebras affect his game. I can’t recall ever seeing a player get two T’s like that in the same season before...and if he’s guarding Powell, that kid is going to get the calls...

Our team is very young and reactionary. They play up to good competition and lay eggs against bad competition. I have no doubt we'll play our best game of the year vs shu. Whether it's enough is another question.
