Behind the scenes, Mullin lost Slice Rohrssen, the dynamite assistant that is an Ace recruiter and likely helped land the bulk of their existing freshman like Ponds and others....they had a "disagreement" and Slice and Mullin parted ways earlier this year. That appears to be more about Mullin than Slice.....Slice doesn't have an ego reputation to my knowledge.
It remains to be seen whether SJU can recruit at the high level of this past class, but in the Big East, they shouldn't be at the bottom of that conference. It's an improved conference and has shut down criticism from folks like me that expected a eventual decline (in a way, they are still declining when they play Power 5 schools, the matchups don't favor the Big East), but SJU should at least be middle of the pack in that league. When the league plays each other, the games are very entertaining and competitive, but it's hard to gauge how good they are, most of the league doesn't have size and depth up front......it's a guard heavy league.....SJU definitely has guards, so they should be OK.
I think they will be fine next year, they will learn with a lot of freshmen this year and I'd expect better play in January/February vs late November....if they aren't improving by the end of the season, Mullin is going to have a tough time turning them around.....I'm also questioning Mullin's choices of assistant coaches, it doesn't seem like a strong bench....the mention of Eddie Jordan 2.0, might be accurate....
