Spartans to play PSU in Palestra

One wonders why PSU would give up a home game to play at what will likely be a neutral court. It is during the semester break (if PSU is on semesters and not a quarter system) but PSU fans have never traveled for bball like they do for football.

That said, the Palestra is a unique venue with a storied history. A lot of RU fans will have fond memories of the A-10 tournament games played there as well some memorable games against Penn back when they were a national power.

I hope that this is not symptomatic of a growing trend for the B1G - RU giving up a home game against Wisconsin in men's bball and against UMD in football, UMd giving up a home football game against PSU, and, possibly, other games being moved around as well.

Perhaps TTFP considers it a recruiting nod to Philadelphia and/or a promise to a recent recruit to play a game in Philadelphia for the convenience of family and friends. Or then again, the league encouraging doormats to play at public (rather than on-campus) venues for the convenience of the media and "visiting" team supporters who need to travel and combine the trip with vacation/travel plans. In Rutgers case, when Rutgers plays at the Garden, it gets coverage on NYC broadcast TV news sports spots. When we play at Piscataway, we get nada/zilch NYC broadcast TV coverage.

I don't believe this is pandemic. Playing in Philly could be a goal of PSU basketball.
They've been recruiting Philly pretty hard lately. Giving up a home game in this case probably earns them more money as people don't actually attend home PSU basketball games. If this we're Maryland or Wisconsin giving up nearly 18K tickets, then it'd be a problem.

The Maryland-Penn State game in Baltimore was a contractual obligation for Maryland. The Terps were to play Virginia Tech at M&T before Maryland switched to the Big Ten. This doesn't strike me as a big deal except to those who don't want a Rutgers game at Yankee Stadium.

I think if you're going to win at Penn State recruiting the greater Philly area has to be a priority.

Why not play a game there at the Palestra versus an opponent that is going to sell a lot of tickets ?

It makes sense to me.

I am one of those.

They are doing this for Hockey too with a game against Princeton to be played at Wells Fargo Center.

I can see the reason to do it for BB for recruiting, history of the Palestra and local alumni but not so much for Hockey considering they have a great on campus facility.

Are you saying that TTFP has no home court advantage playing at home?

I thought everybody knew that?

They're going to play 13-14 of them on campus.

Playing a game in the Palestra is IMO good for recruiting and a good chance for the Philly alum and HS players to see your program.

Beyond that I think playing a game in a venue like the Palestra is pretty cool .

If they were going to play in Wells Fargo I wouldn't think much of it.

I don't see the downside for spreading the college game day experience at NYC for a game that some RU fans in NYC or Northern NJ, would be hard pressed to get to Piscataway for, regardless of whether it's a weeknight or weekend game. Getting to NYC for one game a year makes sense for me, if it's RU making a NYC/MSG destination date once a year.

I'd actually welcome the breakup of the conference schedule and even though I'm not missing the Big East at all, I liked an occasional visit to MSG for St. Johns or even a diversion to eat in Newark before a game day to play Seton Hall. It''s more about exposure vs revenue at this point.
