Stannis Baratheon is Chris Christie

No one is rooting for that guy anymore.

Book reader here, happy the show is pretty much caught up so I can stop comparing and just enjoy. Knowing a new book isn't coming soon, it's fun again.

That said, Stannis goes from being a somewhat protagonist to "Ramsey, have at him"!

And that was the guy who moved heaven and earth to stop the grayscale in his daughter.

What happened to you, man? You used to be.. well.. not exactly cool.. but brah.. you're a dick now!

What made it more emotional was that all this time we thought the mom had no feeling for the daughter while Stannis did.

That scene was the complete opposite.

F Stannis!

It was an awfully good episode. And the preview suggests that the season finale ought to be something, too.

Surprised how good this episode was after last week (which was one of the best of the entire series).

Great episode. Seems like they left the best for the last three. I had a feeling he was going to go through with that deed. More dragons please.

The two scenes at the end of the last two episodes have been great. The producers had mentioned how those two scenes took an unprecedented proportion of their shooting days to get down. With that being said, I think the rest of last nights episode was not as strong as the rest of the episode the week prior.

What are the producers/writers doing? I think they're sitting in a room going "what would HBO not let us do" and then they go ahead and do it ala burning a little girl alive, Ramsey relentless beating and raping a teenager, etc

Both creations of the show and not the book. The writers have a screw loose they are sickening!

To be fair Ramsey does to much worst to the even younger teenage girl in the book (not Sansa) that he gets married to. Also there is a 100% chance that Shireen doesn't make it past the next book.

I was rooting for Stannis although the burning of his daughter was foreshadowed. But, did Stannis have a choice? He's snow bound, his men are freezing and starving and the Boltons hold the north who seem to have no care that the white walkers are on the march and that Westerros is threatened. Stannis believes he is the only hope for the world. Does he sacrifice his daughter to save the kingdom or does he save his daughter and sacrifice Westerros?

In that scenario maybe he has no choice. However this is different than the books. Basing his actions according to the show plot, explain to me how it is his only option? Stannis Baratheon, the best military strategist still alive in westeross, can't advance towards winterfell because of the weather but the bastard of Bolton w/ no real military experience can advance on him???? Changes they are making to the show might be visual cool but there is no supporting logic to the sequence of events.

By the way, I should have said that this thread is unfair to Chris Christie, possibly the first time I've ever even thought something like that.

This is pretty much how I see it. The issue with Stannis isn't morality/priorities - It's more that he incorrectly trusts Melissandre's visions. He sees it as his daughter vs. the fate of the world, so it's a sacrifice that needs to be made.

Of course, it is far more complex than him just lusting for power at all cost.

However, the sad part s that Melissandre's god may not even be real. In fact, there is a good reason to believe it is not what she thinks it is.

Not sure that it is not his lusting for power.. seemingly justified by the Red Witch's musings. You can tell that Stannis has always had a problem with thinking he deserves better. He "got stuck" with Dragonstone instead of Storm's End.. his younger brother getting that while his older got the Iron Throne. I think the Red Witch is using that to her own ends. Intentional or not, Melissandre is killing off anyone with King's blood in the name of sacrifice. Sounds like a commie.

By the way, the dragon in the final scene looked much more vulnerable to defeat than you would expect from an animal that was supposed to lead his queen to victory. A few spears in the body, and he's close to hobbling and ultimately had to fly away.

I thought Tyrion's face during the dragon scene was great. He never seems to be impressed but he was with the dragon. I also agree above post, that dragon seemed very vulnerable to a spear or two.

@GoodOl'Rutgers, that thought never occurred to me oddly enough (non book reader here). Makes a lot sense that she is intentionally trying to kill off anyone who has a claim to the throne. Less people to deal with and easier to be done in the name of Stannis then on her own.

@willisneverrana43 I couldn't believe how vulnerable they made that dragon look. I thought his skin was supposed to be impenetrable? So much for that.

I don't know that the dragons are full grown yet.

Melisandre does have some powers; she's demonstrated them before.

The Dragons are very young, remember those HUGE skulls of the adult dragons in the earlier seasons.

The Red Woman is a witch with powers but that doesn't mean that her god is real or any of the other gods mention are real.

from a WIKI (book version)

As hatchlings, they are around the size of a cat, but continue growing and can reach sizes large enough to swallow a mammoth whole.

A dragon's scales are largely but not entirely impervious to flame; they protect the more vulnerable flesh and musculature beneath. As a dragon ages, its scales thicken and grow harder, affording even more protection, even as its flames burn hotter. Whereas the flames of a hatchling can set straw aflame, the flames of Balerion and Vhagar at their prime melted steel and stone.

Who was the guy Arya was stalking in the whorehouse? I figure it was a guy from her list back in Kings Landing, but didn't recognize him.

Meryn Trent, the guy who executed her father.

Edit: He didn't kill her father, he killed that guy who was training her in sword play. Maybe.

Can't wait to see what Davos does when he finds out. I hope he kills that red bitch.

Yeah.. thought it was Trant.. hard to keep track.. but that douche of a knight and Kings Guard has done a lot of bad stuff.. killed the "dancing teacher".. beat Sansa for Joffrey.. testified against Tyrion.

Would be fitting if Ayra kills him.

Season One---
Arya's trainer Syrio Forel was highly skilled but probably let his big ego get himself killed as equipped with only a wooden training stick, he took on several fullly armored Lannister King's Guards. He took down four of them, but the leader, Meryn Trant defeated Syrio. (the final blow was never shown on screen, leading some hopeful fans wondering if Syrio survived... however, many if not most fans generally believe Syrio is dead at the hands of Meryn Trant)

Syrio could have easily picked up one of the real swords from any of the guards he defeated, but instead chose to continue to fight with his wooden stick... again, his big ego ultimately caused his demise.

And of course, to make Meryn Trant even more despised... he's a pedophile, as shown in Sunday's episode 9. I wouldn't be surprised if his repeated quote "too old"..... would be trending on the web.

The first sword of Braavos does not run from a fight and he does not fight with another man's sword.

... and he doesn't take American Express.

By the way, the unsullied don't seem to be so bad ass either. Whenever trouble arises, even in large, packed arenas, there seem to be about 15 of them and they lose quickly to rich people wearing goofy Halloween masks.

I have to say, the books are becoming rather foggy memory to me. Nothing in it, as far as I can recall, directly supports the theory I gave on the Melisandre. And as others have suggested.. perhaps she is being deceived by her "god".

*SPOILERS*

In the show they have shown the guerilla fighters that once held Arya and Hot Pie and Gendry had a red priest with them and answered to the red witch. And we saw that one of them had been raised from the dead 6 times. In the books.. Lady Stark was "undead". I don't recall if that were ever resolved... but at this point I would have expected to have seen it referenced and that might have had some meaning here with the Red Witch's part in all of this.

And while I know that Stannis was trying to form a Wildling army to support him in the North.. as well as get help from Jon Snow.. my memory tells me he sent Davos (the Onion Knight) to some port city in the South of the North (White Harbor) to get help and that Davos, a former smuggler/pirate, was rather unwelcome and had to pull some real tough diplomatic moves. I do not know if that is coming or if it is just going to be ignored.

WOW.. I just had to remind myself of the differences so I went to this site.. wow. So many differences.

Hey Innermind.. the Trant quote was "too old". And he wants a "fresh one" every night he is in town. That bastard needs to meet the faceless man quickly.

Doesn't it seem that the Red Priestess, who apparently has seen into the future, isn't all that convinced in Stannis' chances? Moreover, she seemed pretty willing to jump on John Snow's bandwagon a few weeks ago.

Looking forward to next week but wishing this season was a couple of episodes longer!

That's what happens when reading the books. I did not start them until there were 3 and nearly 4 of them out there. But the wait for the next book is very long. Which is why the TV series has passed the books.

GRRM's pace has always been slow.. and now he has all the stuff involving the TV show and licensing and so on to deal with. But you'd think as the story winds down he wouldn't have t spend so much time fleshing things out for future plot lines and the like and can just connect all the dots. Now he has to help the TV writers to do that.

It has to be very hard now for even the author to keep the two stories separate in his mind. There are so many things that are different that I hope he doesn't trip himself and write in stuff in the novels that only refers to stuff that happened in the TV show. Weird place to be for this story.

This is explained in the books better than in the show. The unsullied are very good and fearless fighters in warfare (think Roman Legions). But they are not as good at peacekeeping and defending the gorilla tactics of the harpies.

Given the nature of this board, I'm surprised this hasn't already been mentioned - the dragon is probably only a 2-star. How did Rivals have it rated? Did it have any offers other than from Dany? You can't rule the Seven Kingdoms if you don't have some 4 and 5-star Dragons.

As far as I'm concerned, if the dragon torches and chews on as many Buckeyes as Harpys, I like our chances against OSU this year. Though I think OSU will be more like White Walker zombies. I have visions of Urban Meyer slowly raising his arms at the 50 yardline in a stare down with Flood, unleashing pure hell.
Le's see what the Scarlet Knight's Watch is made of.

On another note, I'm just glad to see the Lionel Ritchie look-alike that was Dany's husband was a short-timer.

I'm soo tired of this sh/t ! Fire Danys already. She can't get top dragon talent to commit.

Listen Aegnon Targarean built up his kingdom from nothing. Even though Dragonstone is the birthplace of firebreathing flying death, it was nothing but a wasteland. What did he do, in 10 years?? He sold the dream of owning the seven kingdoms to a handful of dragons and fVcking cleaned house. He would have won the Iron Throne in '07 if it wasn't for a couple of drops in the battle of Dorne. Admittedly, he wasn't much of a battlefield marshall but he could sell ice to wildlings, I tell ya.

Dany??? Are you kidding me? Biggest example of right place, right time. Caught a couple of lucky breaks early on but just cannot recruit. How many times do we have to see local dragon talent have to fly away from the nest? Everyone gets so pumped when the dragons stop by the courtyard to hang out. It doesn't mean sh/t. I stopped following all of the dragons twitter accounts. Can't take it anymore!!! Watch how many wildling giants are trying on wings and switching positions next year; just watch.

Oh and wait until the Star Ledger writes up the debacle in the fighting pits. It will take more than a Delbarton PR dwarf to spin that controversy away.

Added insult to injury, did you notice that the dragon getting its ass kicked was wearing orange sneakers before it flew off campus?

Fire Daenerys!!!
