Steve Pikiell has an in-home with Cam Johnson

I hope he's bringing Mr. Knight with him. This is going to be as tough a sell as they come (given the context of the situation), but I'm glad we're in the game.

Can't believe we're in it. Please please please. I really want nice things

Tough one to get against perennial tourney teams and very good coaches. Not much of a chance Pikiell can convince Johnson that he can help him develop for the next level better than those other coaches.

I am really kind of shocked by this. I assumed he would be going to Kentucky. I cannot believe that we have a shot. It would be nice to shock the world. Now that would be sweet.

Your comment is spot on because it could be made for other recruits that are highly rated. How does Pikiell close the deal against more successful programs when previous Rutgers head coaches failed to sign top tier recruits?

The key is he is getting the visits while countless other schools are not or not being considered. ...has to count for something. ...it's a numbers game, the more quality targets you get in front of, the faster you get things done.
Totally agree. It's also a perception thing. It's definitely a good selling point if Pike can mention the guys he has considering RU when going after transfers/recruits

I believe Johnson's home is only about 50 miles from RU. Hopefully he would like his family to see him play his last year.

He is an immediate eligible grad transfer with 2 years left instead of the typical one year....schools view him similar to a top JUCO, just with a safer and more likely person that won't need to adjust to D1 basketball. ...didn't know he was within an hour or so of the RU campus and we offer elite schedule and competition on the uptick.

It just seems if somehow we can win one of these recruiting battles and maybe catch a break we will be on our way. We nab a guy like Johnson perhaps some dominoes will fall getting a few high powered guys and we will be competitive in the BIG!!! Man, I know patience is a virtue but c'mon we need some promising news!!

???? where do you get that connection - everything seems to say Pittsburgh area native through & through

Hometown:
Moon Township, Pa.

High School:
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart - a private Catholic high school in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.

Johnson’s father, Gil - played at Pitt in the late 1980s

Why not us dammit? If 8 win Missouri can land blue chip prospects, why can't we beat out a few teams for Cam? Let's do it!!

Rumba, I am sorry. A few weeks ago I looked up where one of the guys was from that we were recruiting. The guy was from across the river from Trenton in Pennsylvania. I thought yesterday it was Johnson but I apparently was wrong. I am still trying to figure out who it was unless I looked something up on him wrong. Thanks for the clarification.

Why wouldn't Pikiell be able to convince Johnson he can develop him more than the other coaches?

Because several of those coaches have players they can point to in terms of development. Pikiell does not have that track record yet, with the exception of Jameel Warney at Stony Brook.

Maybe other teams have gone to 20 NCAAs in a row, or maybe it is too hard
to overcome the reputation of RU over the last several decades.
Having said that, I think if anyone can do it, it will be Pikiell at some point.

A very succinct analysis of the difficulty Rutgers faces in recruiting.Pikiell and staff are hard workers but in recruiting it comes down to choices .Winning matters and losing is hard to explain to recruits .

With the Robinson kid leaving Florida and the 2 Michigan players looking to bolt for the NBA the Wolverines and the Gators are going to be tough to beat .

@Russ Wood Does this eliminate Florida from the Cam Johnson race?

I'm working to get clarification on that actually. If I had a nickel for every time I've been asked that question since about 8:58pm tonight...I'd have a dollar.

Right now Florida is full, but I think another scholarship will be opening up. Mike White went in-home with Johnson recently. Johnson is taller than Koulechov at 6-foot-8 but I'm sure he wants to play the SF position and now PF. Florida is also looking at Isiaha Mike of Duquesne and Kyle McIntosh of Illinois State as potential grad transfers.

Edit: Florida is not currently full, I forgot that Freshman guard Eric Hester is transferring.

Florida's pursuit of Pittsburgh transfer Cam Johnson ended this morning according to Johnson's father.

He said UF Coach Mike White called him and thanked him for the opportunity to recruit his son & explained that UF accepted the commitment of another player.

@Russ Wood Would I be out of line if I asked you to contact Johnson's father back and put in a good word for Rutgers......o_O

So you're saying there's a chance?!? All kidding aside, your info (good news or bad) has been great

Every school in the country wants this kid. Unless there are unseen factors or he has less options than he appears to, our chances are still very slim.
