One benefit in all of this, namely Spurrier retiring now and USC firing their coach, is that there will be stiff competition for candidates, and this will limit Maryland's prospects or force them to bid higher. If I have an opportunity to be a head coach at these three schools, I would rank them.

I think Maryland's Under Armour flagship status and Kevin Plank's direct support will make that job more attractive than it was when Edsall was hired.

Mangus has some trouble following recruiting rules.

Please, the guy is a top-notch Div-1 assistant. Rutgers would hire him in a heartbeat. His resume is solid. He is an established coach, not someone learning the trade.

Steve Spurrier has many great quotes. Great sense of humor and would throw digs at all of his opponents. My favorite is his line about a small fire in the Auburn library where 20 books were destroyed. In his great southern drawl he said " But the real tragedy is that 15 of them hadn't been colored in yet"

While in the stadium this weekend, we were talking about Spurrier and the lack of results he's produced so far at USCe and wondering how long he would last. Didn't expect the answer to be provided so soon.

As for Schiano, I don't expect him to be hired for the P5 jobs available so far but he could well end up replacing a head coach who is chosen for one of those jobs. Or he could end up at a G5 program.

Is he on TV very much as a color commentator for NCAA games? If not, I'm surprised that no one has picked him up for a gig like that, especially considering some of the guys who are doing that.

Saw an hour long interview with Spurrier on "Feherty". If you saw it, this season is the scenario he said would make him hang it up. IIRC, he said he'd just walk. No fanfare, no good bye tour. Just off into the sunset.

Just now he mentioned trying to recruit as a 70 year old HC. The same thing had happened to JoePa at PSU and a major reason why their recruiting was sub par his last few years.

I doubt there was any agenda with the USCe Admin and I'm guessing while they had a hint it would happen, probably didn't think this quickly.
