Stony Brook Game Thread

Are we coaching kids to run into a triple team, for F’s sake. It looks like we do and how are we letting this persist? That is on Brian, he needs to change things immediately, F, F, F. OK I am done for today, maybe some exercise to relax a bit.

Hahaha I’m so in your head. Dude follows me around the site like a lost dog lol!

Up 4-0 early in the 1st…at home….lose 9-8. That’s coaching IMHO.
Isn’t our coach an experienced and respected Lacrosse man?
Is it possible the head coach is teaching his players to not move, cut or create space for each other?
Lacrosse is no different than any other sport,..in its simplest form it’s taking away time and space on D and creating time and space on O

@zappaa All of the above is correct which is why it is more mind blowing when our players attack areas where there is not space. It looks to me that someone’s number is being called on the sideline and they dodge into traffic come hell or high water. I do not see other teams holding the ball like we do, you need to be looking for the guy who does have space as soon as a double slides to you.

The offensive coordinator store controls the offense

Offense has very little leadership. You have to have an attackman who, preferably your x, that controls the game. Our attack is all wrong. We play two guys that don't carry the ball and can only shoot. We are also very young and you can see that at the end of the game. I said there would be some maddening play and here we are. Our shot selection is very questionable. We take so many low angle shots.

The biggest issue is the attack and our lack of off ball movement. We are very easy to guard. Substitution patters are questionable. Sommer didn't play all game then he's in at the most crucial times? Jungerkes had 2 goals. As a SSDM he outscored our attack. That can't happen. Ball was getting stuck in sticks and
Glad I'm not at those practices this week.

Jungerkees showed the most leadership on the offense as a D middie. Need Kurdyla to step up. The pressure D disappeared in the 2nd and 3rd. Kulas should play man up and limited even strength until someone runs the O from attack.

A facing a hot goalie didn't help.

That’s why I posted what I did earlier. You can only make the mistake of bad angle shots and attacking from goal line extended once without it being corrected by proper coaching. This is a multi year issue. Thats why I think it is by design. The players have to be instructed and coached to attack these areas of no or bad space.

Same old issues. No off ball movement. Dodging into double and triple teams. Back to low percentage shooting and missing the cage on high percentage shots. I am now convinced they are more interested in highlight reel corner picks than scoring goals. Kulas at X is a head scratcher. Aiello is going to be a good one but showed the downside of starting freshman today.

Stoller was uneven. Had some spectacular saves but let in several he should have had. The SBU goalie, to his credit, overcame a very shaky start and ended up being the biggest difference maker in this game.

This was a very frustrating loss. We clearly had more talent across the board. At times we made them look like HS players. They did not have a ton of opportunities but when they did they converted. We failed to convert time and time again. We dominated the middle of the field, riding and clearing and defense was mostly solid. Turnovers and inability to convert in settled situations were killers. We really need to radically rethink our offensive sets outside of transition.

You seen the Michigan score?
For some reason, we happen to be able to beat Michigan even though they won, if I wrote correctly, back to back big 10 titles? Something, need I remind you, we’ve never done.

Stony Brook, like so many other schools, having instilled an attitude of WINNING. We, on the other hand, are on the short list of schools that have no clue how to ****ing win when they’re ahead. It’s ****ing pathetic and I’ve been bringing it up for years now.

I'd wager it would be closer than 15-6.
Today sucked. But it’s lacrosse and this team will upset an opponent or two. If they don’t then we will have to file an imagined, respectable loss against UNC as a moral victory and I refuse to do that. Everyone with eyes can see there’s a recurring scheme problem but with sooooo much talent in the HS ranks and the portal I think fans are getting tired of hearing about guys who can’t carry, finish, injuries etc.

I was thinking a win over Michigan. OSU didn't get off to a blazing start. Army will be tough, but Loyola will be a real measuring stick after their game vs Maryland.

Those of us who have played a sport at a high level know the head coach has responsibility for the systems and philosophies installed.
True. That’s why he’s going to have to make an OC chance

In the mean time the head coach must demand the OC run an offense he wants to see
There in the lies the issue. Does he have the knowledge to do so? I wouldn’t be shocked if we make a change at the end of the year. We’ve been running on fumes on offense for a few years now.

There is a certain OC in Michigan who would be great here

I’m not sure the OC is capable. He very tied to the old school style of lacrosse. We made a few changes and early it looked great. Off ball and ball movement was good. Then each game it got worse. LIU was fools gold. Our superior talent made superior plays. But that’s not going to work every game. Our scheme can’t be to just have better players. They also play tight. They get pulled after any mistake. Mistakes they often make due to just being asked to go make a play.

Eric Seremet is our OC. After the ridiculous talent we had that took us to the Final Four, our offensive production has been terrible. We had two PLL players last year and still averaged under 10 goals. This season took a dramatic turn today. The worst loss we’ve had in 5 years.

Why has it come to this? These issues have become endemic. My pessimistic side expected it. It's extremely disappointing to see that it hasn't been corrected. Are those early scrimmages our peak play?

I’m not an expert when it comes to lacrosse, but the last two years our in zone offense looked awful. Lot of standing around, one vs one, and frankly no one getting open looks. Very frustrating to watch, especially when you consider how explosive they’ve always been on the fast break.
Do we not have the talent to run what we’re running or is the scheme totally archaic? Second, if the scheme is terrible, who needs to get into coach’s ear to fire him? Because honestly, the last two seasons in conference play should have been a good reason to let the OC go.

Do you know what this means Cali?
You are actually questioning if the head coach of a major D1 lax program understands or has the knowledge of what a modern offense is.
Since we don’t see it, we have to assume he doesn’t…which also means against top competition he couldn’t defend it.

You have to see and understand the schemes and philosophies of the opposition before you can strategize on how to stop it.

So again…..dumbing it down to its simplest form.
We are rushed and pressured on offense, seemingly running into traffic constantly!

On Defense, once the opponent has crossed midfield and set up their offense, we allow way to much time and space and don’t pressure the ball.

He was on my flight home from the PLC championship in Naples back in November decked out in his Michigan attire. Wanted so bad to strike up a conversation but resisted the urge to do so.

A bit of a nitpick, but the D still pressures after the offense has passed over the midfield line but before they set up around the restraining line when appropriate.

Boiled down, the defense needs fine tuning while the offense needs a serious fix.
