Stop with your fantasy about another channel picking up the opener

What's the advantage of playing UCLA, if nobody can see the game?

For that matter, what's the advantage of playing Buffalo, period?
So then what opponents are acceptable to you?

The advantage of playing UCLA is they are an opponent with national name recognition from a power conference. I would rather us play UCLA on a network that many in NJ might not have instead of playing a low level no name.

Playing Buffalo... well, you cannot expect to only play 12 power conference opponents every season. Particularly if you rule out the Pac-12 because their network is not widely available in NJ.

Right now, at the confluence of A) our program's resurgence and increased efforts to build both a local recruiting base and a local following and B) the confusion that is the landscape of sports networks, affiliates, carriage agreements and delivery mechanisms, I see no reason to schedule a PAC12 team if it means there's even the slightest chance we can't get the game to at least 75% of the eyeballs in the metro area.

Disagree with this thinking, but to each their own.

Throw out SEC teams too, as the SEC network isnt available on Optimum, one of the largest cable companies in the area?

I'd also add that there are many benefits to these games even in the off chance they are not made widely available on traditional television. For one thing, the return visits by teams like Washington and UCLA are games that likely all season ticket holders will be excited about, and will certainly be on TV (ESPN networks or BTN). Also, winning these games is a way to get some real positive momentum for the program. These are respected opponents.

I would suggest that these are the exact type of games that should be scheduled. If a game here or there ends up being less available on tv than many would like, that is a downside that is greatly outweighed by the positives of such games.

Finally, when these games were scheduled, I'm not even sure the PAC-12 network existed.

From my experience, streaming from your computer is your best bet. The links on Kodi have been cruddy to say the least. But if you absolutely must watch it on KODI.. .its bearable.

Had no issue watching Rutgers in Seattle playing Washington State on FS1 2 years ago. Guess the powers to be decided this year's game wasn't worthy of a Tier 1/2 channel slot. When we're out on the west coast again, it's highly likely we'll play on ESPN/Fox. Doesn't mean we should shy away from playing Pac 12 opponents. Always interesting match-ups and developed an interest in following Washington State's seasons the last 2 years. Our games against Washington State were fun.

Who scheduled this game? Was it Pernetti or Julie?

The point being, it's imperative that you understand carriage agreements and coverage footprints before you commit to a scheduled series. If 90% of your local fan base isn't going to be able to watch the game, then DON'T F*CKING SCHEDULE IT.

Just plain dumb thinking. As others have pointed out, no one knew what channel the game would be on when it was booked. As a fan base, we were generally thrilled with this match up when it was announced. Also, think of it in reverse - my guess is when Washington comes to Rutgers, the game is a strong candidate for the BTN. Probably lots of people in the state of Washington who do not get BTN and will be in the same boat as we are now. If schools start scheduling only if they can be assured of a basic cable channel slot, not sure if we will be able to arrange premier matchups.

In all its SD quality since even Comcast doesn't deem it worthy enough to carry in HD.

This is why I keep advocating for a new giant videoboard over the North entrance. Our current videoboard is only 2,567 sq ft (less of that is used for actual video due to advertising) & is the 47th largest in college. IIRC, it was top 10 when it was installed but now there are others 2x or 3x larger. We should get 1 the size of Arkansas, which is 6,286 sq ft, or Sun Life Stadium, which is 6,717 sq ft.

This.
Our Video Board is the same size as the University of New Mexico !
Time to step up and be a big boy program .

Maybe when the Stadium naming rights come up for Contract renewal , we can leverage a new, bigger board with the new Sponsor .

At this point it makes more sense to schedule matchups against teams like West Virginia and Miami than Washington and UCLA. The former is just a curiosity and the latter is a mere shade of its former self. Get excited about UW and UCLA all you want, but if our fans can't watch the game then it's a bad choice.

And the miserable penetration of the PAC12 network isn't a yesterday thing. It's always been miserable. Ya know why? Because very few people in this area give two shits and a flying f*ck about the PAC12. Which should have been a clue.

Doubt the reverse will happen. The B1G is available in 90 million homes as basic or as a pay channel. The Pac12 just over 12 million. Most major cable companies carry the B1G. The Pac12 is carried by limited outlets. They will easily be able to find the game next year, we'll be left scrambling because they have a sh*tty TV deal. I have faith a local affiliate will pick the game up. Too many eyeballs that could potentially be lost and those all important advertising $$$$. Right now it seems like some posturing going on by those who own the rights. In the end they won't give up the money to stand their ground. Hopefully.

If your provider doesn't have the Pac12 Network, maybe change providers to one that does.
Pac-12 Networks Channel Finder
http://pac-12.com/getpac-12networks

The PAC Network was stated in 2012 and the RU -Washington game was agreed on in 2014.
No one could have guessed there would be this type of TV trouble when game was agreed upon.
Refusing to play PAC schools at their house because of the TV coverage might not be a wise move
because one can never tell if things will change by the time you start playing teams from that conference .
Getting quality opponents from the PAC to come to Rutgers Stadium might be a little harder if RU puts TV qualifications on games played at the PAC houses.

This would not happen to Pen St
Oh contraire my friend. We have dish satellite service in our RV. When we were at PSU last fall for the game my wife got cold in the rain and we went back to the RV after the second quarter. My sister had stayed in the RV due to a bad foot and watched the game for the first two minutes before they regionally blacked it out. Needless to say we were not happy campers.

Some here aren't thinking long-term. Rutgers joined the Big just a few years ago and is finally trying to fundraise on a level NECESSARY to compete within a P5 conference. Don't you think playing a few games on the West Coast might -- just possibly -- get some West Coast alums interested in their school again? Maybe even start donating if they haven't been or donate at a higher level if they have been?

When you think of how many RU alums are on the West Coast, having games with a few programs out there makes perfect sense.

You can't assume something like the Pac10 network will have limited access. And there's always the chance that changes.

It's a good point, but I think that if you're really trying to build a following (and dredge your athletic department out of nj.com "Subsidy Jail") you think of it in terms of a simply business problem.

As somebody else mentioned in this thread, the loss of eyeballs in our backyard, the most densely populated sports media market in the country, is ultimately more costly than can be remediated by any potential rekindling of "west coast alums".

Jesus will you STFU? Some of us actually want to read this thread without having to wade through more of your bullshit theories.

So I've read all the back-and-forth up until the thread above. At first, I thought you made an interesting point. By now, I feel like you've dug your heels in on an untenable position, especially with the last bit about people not giving an f about the PAC12. We kind of should give a flying f about the PAC12 now and about scheduling quality opponents.

Everyone loved these match-ups when they were announced. This is exactly the kind of opponent we've wanted for years, plus the whole B1G/PAC12 connection adds to it and to the experience of being in the B1G. People will find a way to watch the game - they've been doing it for years - and these games will bring much more good than bad to our program, IMO. The Washington State series was great, and hopefully these upcoming series will be, too.

And that's not just because I have the PAC12 network and consider it my second favorite conference [smoke]

It works!! Awesome. Thank you Rutgers Union and Newell.
Yep! I'm all set, too. I can't get 1.1.3 of the addon to work because it comes without the stream links but version 1.1.1 works just fine. And that's in 1080p HD on all 7 of their channels. I'm running it on a Dell Android tablet with Kodi 16.1. Tomorrow I'll give it a try on an Android settop box that's connected to my large screen TV.

You beat me to it. If you have Amazon TV you can get an addon to your KODI to install the PAC 12 network. Here is a 10 year old boy explaining how to get the PAC12 network onto your KODI.

That kid was really annoying to me. I almost gave up because of him. Instead use this site...
https://superrepo.org/kodi/addon/plugin.video.Pac-12/

Don't upgrade to version 1.1.3 of the addon. If you do you'll lose your stream links. Stick with version 1.1.1 that is part of the Super Repo.

I have Verizon and I thought I have seen PAC 12 Network games on Fox Sports channels from time to time. Might that be an option?

You sound like a whining toddler who had their toy taken away. You can't play an OOC schedule against the same eastern based teams all the time. You need to branch out and play teams from other P5 conferences that are not East Coast. It's good for recruiting, school exposure, and it helps get RETURN games to HPSS. So that when I get my season ticket renewal there are games against teams I want to go see. TV deals like this are normal, and as the article says RU is around by the same rules via BTN. The best way to ensure it doesn't happen is to be good enough that ESPN or Fox Sports wants to pick the game up. The reason this game is on the PAC 12 is because the other national feeds don't value UW/RU is due to the poor state of our team. And as far as negotiating a TV feed. Not going to happen. Rutgers is not in the position to make that kind of demand. So either you get games against good opponents on the schedule or spend you days watching us play on the road at Ball State on ESPN8 the Ocho!!.

Our biggest alumni bases are in the Tri-State, Florida, and California. Most Rutgers graduates live in those 3 places. So we should not stop playing west coast teams forever, this is just one of those weird games. Had we come off a successful seasons it would have been picked up by a bigger channel. Just our luck.

FS1's Pac-12 game that day is BYU at Arizona. Had this game been on Thursday night, as the Wazzu game was, it would have likely been selected by FS1 because they don't have Thursday night game (they declined FCS Southern Utah at Utah).
