Stringer 3.4 Million...Contract released

This is a PC move bye RU..shades of Julie Herman.Tim Pernetti got thrown under the bus in two minutes bye "Mr Too busy Barchi" ,who couldnt view the Rice video.
This is definitely pr move and yes Abro it is not racist but it is most definitely because she is older and a black women that she got this extension. If she got fired it would be considered racist or age discrimination. She had Hobbs by the you know what’s and Rutgers women’s basketball is going to keep paying the price for a couch who is so past her prime it is pathetic.

I don't get it. Hope there is money in the budget for a strong 1st assistant who has a clue about running a half court offense. I don't want her involved in choosing her successor either. She needs a Marianne Stanley assistant. In reality is that this is the type of role cvs is better suited for at this point in her career.

Dumbest decision the administration has made in a long time...and they have made some doosies. I'm ok with letting her stagger to 1000 wins, but four years is ridiculous.

bad move by Hobbs unless this was a call Barchi.be nice if BOG informed everyone why this was approved.

We can disagree on whether CVS should be retained. For argument's sake, let's say she should.

That said, this contract is beyond insane. I cannot find a word in the English language to adequately describe it.

Four years ago, CVS signed a contract that was far more friendly to the university. It included lower base salary amounts, modest buyouts (including a $0 buyout window after two years) and to my knowledge no incentives. She signed it either because she thought it was fair, or because she realized that given her bargaining position it was the best she could do.

So we fast forward four years to today. Her bargaining position hasn't exactly improved, has it?

IMHO the obvious solution for Hobbs would have been to offer her an extension of her existing contract, with the same terms carrying forward. Why he felt compelled to sweeten the pot, I will never know. Are CVS' services in demand outside of RU? Against whom was he negotiating?

say what you want about Julie by she was pretty shrewd with the CVS contract from before. She slashed the base big time down to 700K but laden it with incentives...the idea was that CVS was either going to make a turnaround and another run at the Final 4 or she would retire....instead CVS brought the program to its lowest ever and attendence declined rapidly...Hobbs actually ups her base and incentives which is insane given a 6-24 season, its unfathomable...all the bargainning chips were his, she was not walking away, she should have got less based on spiraling attendance alone

Another great financial decision by the RU BOG. Just shows how irrelevant Women's BB has become. They haven't been in the top 20 in what like 7 years..Since Hobbs signed off on this, you just got to wonder...

I just read on another thread that head coaches need at least a 4 year contract at all times or else they can't recruit.

I would assume the same applies to WBB?

Bob,

How many years before she gets the 23 wins to get to 1K ?
As I said the sooner the better... the out is she will move into a cushy job if she doesn’t get it done in 2 years...Just is the right thing to do unfortunately.

Football needs to add a QB Coach and big name recruiter...Guess money was found somewhere..

During a 1:30 p.m. teleconference Thursday, the Rutgers Board of Governors unanimously approved a four-year contract extension with C. Vivian Stringer that will guarantee the Hall of Fame women’s basketball coach $3.4 million in salary from the university through the 2020-21 season.

"With the start of the basketball season just days ahead, I’m delighted that we’ve reached a new agreement with Coach Stringer,'' Rutgers Athletics Director Pat Hobbs said. "We are making investments in excellence across our department and this agreement, along with the coming practice facility, demonstrates our commitment to returning our women’s basketball program to an elite level. This agreement not only recognizes Coach Stringer's success on the court, but also her tremendous record of preparing our students for the next phase of their life, whether in the WNBA, the business world or anything else they might pursue.''

In addition to a base salary that starts at $775,000 this season and increases to $925,000 in Year 4, Stringer is eligible for up to $690,000 in annual-bonus compensation based on the Scarlet Knights’ academic and team success.

It’s a real shame. For that kind of money I’m sure Rutgers could’ve brought in a good young, up-and-coming coach. Instead they get a washed up 69-year-old who’s best days are very well behind her.

This is a combination of PC and sticking too long with a previously successful coach. Let’s face it the results the past 5 years don’t warrant this salary.

No it's ALL PC and black privilege. Does anyone actually think if CVS were a white man he'd get extended with a raise no less. This makes the Flood extension look like a brilliant decision.

Thank you Moose for having the courage to speak the truth. We in this country have been conditioned to be politically correct at all cost, even when being politically correct is incorrect.

No. As i posted earlier, if she was, she would have been fired, forget about a hefty raise. Imagine what Scott Goodale is thinking.. Its like the guy at work that no one understands how they got in their position.

We weren't exactly quick to pull the trigger on Fred Hill as baseball coach, either. He started his RU career with 24 consecutive winning seasons.... then was under .500 for 4 of his last 6. He then retired, rather than being being kicked out and replaced.

What's the PR hit for pushing out a HOF coach, who happens to be the 6th winningest coach in history, 5th among women's bball coaches and 4th among active wbball coaches, who has 4 Final Four appearances across 3 teams, 14 Sweet Sixteens, and an Olympic gold medal?

Pretty sure Stringer will announce her retirement after two years, once she crosses the millennium mark, and then everyone can start complaining that the next women's coach is overpaid.

stop pulling cards to push your point.you sound like a politician from the left.

Those who tolerate racism are enabling racism.

Being black did not help Eddie Jordan or Gary Waters from being fired. They were not Hall of Fame coaches either. Stringer was extended because Hobbs and Barchi are still convinced she can win.
And she is now getting paid about in the middle of the pack of Big10 coaches. She won 23 games 3 years ago, even 2 years ago still a winning record. Last year a mess no doubt. IMO, she can being criticized all people want to for being overpaid , having a downward trend, poor attendance, etc, but when people say Hobbs and Barchi only kept her because she is Black, well, don't tell Eddie Jordan or Gary Waters that. As another poster above said, she's being shown the same kind of respect that long time successful baseball coach Fred Hill was shown, and he wasn't close to being a Hall of Fame Coach.

And Julie Herman was also fired. After only 2 years. She never proved herself like Stringer has. Those with a long history of success will usually get more latitude. Just like Stringer and just like Hill.

I don't buy this. They kept her on out of a false sense of loyalty and respect. No one would say it was race after 2 bad seasons like that.

Julie Hermann was HIRED only for PC reasons, the same reason Stringer is getting this golden parachute Contract.
he leaders of the search committee sent an e-mail to the group’s members assuring them that the process that led to Hermann’s hiring had been fair and transparent.:eyes:

In e-mailed responses, however, at least two committee members claimed that the leaders had whitewashed a process that felt secretive and rushed, leaving them uncomfortable with the university’s selection of Hermann. One member said that concerns over a lawsuit an employee had filed against Hermann were not fully addressed, and that he did not spend enough time with her to feel comfortable that she was the right person to lead an athletic department still reeling from a scandal involving an abusive coach.

one thing about CVS is that she is a stubborn old one, she will hang on for another contract extension which needs to be given out in about two years...watch
This is how I see it playing out.

One thing I find interesting is how she does not have any of her "daughters" on her bench. The one thing she preached over her entire tenure was how the team learns from prior generation. There is no connection to her prior generations. Did Viv run them off or do they know to stay away?

My goodness! Put the last couple of years behind us. All programs go through cycles. We have a double Hall of Fame Coach. She has taken us to the Final Four twice.

We are in a new league and building new facilities to get at least on par with the other programs. As a fan who has supported the Ladies through a lot of "thick" and a lately a bit of "thin", I can't wait to see how she does. As I have said before, nobody in the history of Rutgers has a Coach's body of work on and off the court anywhere near C Viv's. (with all due respect to Theresa and Frank Burns). She gets to decide when she steps down. She earned it.

1--Tim hiring Flood. 2. BOG approving Julie. 3--Hobbs hiring Ash 4--Hobbs extending Vivian. No wonder many die hard RU fans are discouraged by the continuing ineptness of decision-making. It does not have to be this way.

Where's my parachute? Bring me in, I'll lose as many games for half the money! She hasn't done $hit forever, so glad my donations go in the trash can of political correctness.

she wanted equal pay as the RU MBB HC was supposedly one of the reasons
she left.

Never heard that one before. Anything documented to support that idea ?

Theresa Grentz was forced out as WBB HC after the 1995 season in spite of her 434-150 record at RU. 4 time A10 COY, 9 consecutive NCAA appearances. She was also HC of the USA Olympic WBB team at the 92 Barcelona Olympics when the men sent the Dream Team there.

Why was it OK to push her out but CVS with a 457-255 record is untouchable as a RU HC and gets 4 year extension at a big raise ?

Spoken like a true racist.
Real world, we just went through this in my work place, all kinds out outrage. Votes were done by the employees, she out right lost but made all kinds of race related remark. End results, they gave her the award and cancelled the event for next year. Just how it is.
