Started watching pro football in 1955. One game a week, the NY Giants. If I remember correctly there were exactly 2 players in the league who weighed more than 300 pounds - Big Daddy Lipscomb and one of the Giants Roosevelts. Tommy McDonald, an Eagles wide receiver, did not use a face mask. Most of the quarterbacks had a single bar.
Players today are much bigger, faster, stronger, skilled, braggadocious and richer. I don't think they are tougher, however, nor smarter.
