Other than Mathis, this team is way too slow a foot. Even Geo is not quick enough to play man to man defense.

It is totally against how our coaches want us to play on defense, but if we want to win games, we MUST learn to play a zone. Our length would help while playing a zone and it would make up for some of our quickness deficiencies.

Adding Jacob Young next year, makes us much quicker, but that is a year away.

You don’t learn man by playing zone. They HAVE to play man eventually. Playing zone will only set them back further.

Tell that to Syracuse and even Duke played zone last year.

You have to play according to the players you have.

Doesn't matter anyway, because our coaches only believe we should play man to man.

Duke’s biggest downfall every year (since going one and done route) is their inability to play defense and grab rebounds in zone defense. This year’s Duke team is an anomaly b/c they have length. Btw, Duke made a name for themselves playing MAN. The past couple Duke teams played zone because they are flat out bad defensively, but it doesnf matter biggest they don’t actually have to develop players. So who cares if they never learn how to play man? You’ll also get exposed on the glass. You will not get better playing zone. End of story. Cuse is the exception. Using Duke as an example is laughable.

Somewhat true, but Syracuse plays all 2-3 zone and has won a national championship and historically beats up on Big 10 teams because no one else in the league plays zone.

Your end of story will be the downfall of this year's team unless we get quicker against the Big Ten teams. We will be pick and rolled to death by Carson Edwards and many of the guards in the league. Funny how Duke could learn to play a zone(when their great man to man defensive teams were not there), but we can't. You can learn to rebound out of a zone. Of course it is overall better to play man to man, if your players have the aptitude to play it well.

Cuse is an anomaly. That’s like saying our football team should run the triple option because Army went 10-2 (I think). If you want to sprinkle in a little zone, I’m okay with that. Keep in mind you will give up a lot of bad rebounds if the rotation is off. People think you can just roll out a zone because it’s not that hard. But it can be an absolute disaster if you have poor rotation.

We will lose because we’re not good enough, not because we don’t play zone. Big ten guards will shoot us to death in zone. If you want to sprinkle it in, then I’m okay with it. But you will stunt the growth of the team if you completely scrap man. The B1G guards have unlimited range. No, Duke really can’t play zone. This year they have freaks like Zion and and RJ Barrett, but it has been their downfall come tournament time the last two seasons. Trust me, Duke’s man to man defense back in the day was infinitely times better then their zone. Their zone is lazy and garbage

How does it stunt the growth of the team? Players should know how to play multiple defenses. If man isn't working why not sprinkle in some zone?

Scraping man stunts growth because you have to learn man eventually. I’m fine with sprinkling it in. Michigan actually runs it very well, so that is one more team. Frankly though, if it’s a bad zone we’ll get killed from three.

Some people think you can just “play zone” because it looks easy to do and it hides inadequacies. You should really be a very sound m2m team before you even attempt playing a zone since the basic principles are th same.

Truth is, to play an effective zone, you must practice it to death. Syracuse not only does this, but they recruit specific players who can succeed in it. If everyone on D has not bought in, the zone collapses, and you give up a ton of offensive rebounds.

A matchup zone, like Chaney’s Temple teams used to play is even more difficult to learn and execute. The same with West Virginia’s 1-3-1 from several years ago. The game has also evolved to have less traditional big immobile centers, where you could get away with playing more zone.

So you are left with “sprinkling” it into games, to help with foul trouble and to help when we can keep players out of the lane because the help defense is too slow to rotate, etc. I’m fine with this but I think the better option is to pay more attention to our matchups, and not to have certain big men hedge so high., etc. Any good-shooting, smart team will shred the weak zone that I’ve seen us attempt to play.

We are generally a solid defensive team, but we needed to make adjustments yesterday that did not happen.

We might want to mix it up a bit but I have no issue with us being primarily a man to man team. I think Issa and Montez are our best defenders on the perimeter where it is easiest to get exposed. They need to do better defending dribble drives and pick and rolls off screens.

Totally agree we have to start playing some zone. Our team is realllllly super slow laterally. Besides mathis our team looks like theyre moving in sand most of the team on D

Way too much logic and sound reasoning here. According to some we should be able to play zone just like that. All of that being said, we will probably try it. But we’ll most likely give up bad shots
