Why is it always Michigan State that we have to play at MSG.

Good then don’t give up home court advantage to play a conference game on a neutral floor unless every other team does to make it fair,
Given you complain about this in every schedule-related thread, just curious if you will be at the game anyway? Or will you be taking a stand against this gross injustice and staying home?

Home court was not helpful last year.

In addition, I thought teammates were supposed to step up and contribute.

I like big time....and you guys think small time. Would you actually go to MSG if we played Monmouth.
I wouldn’t give away conference home games.
See Duke playing Illinois MSG on Feb 22.
Seems like B1G and Athletic Director dropped the ball. How does that happen?

Gee I thought I was responding to a new string…
And what’s the main issue that popped on this schedule…. Again…and again….
What’s the definition of insanity?

Or maybe you just don’t like that some diehard fans thinking giving up home league games is nutty.
Duke give up Cameron? Indiana give up Assembly Hall? Kansas give up Phog?
Some might say not giving up home league games is actually Big Time.
Dont ever question my fandom. You’d be dead wrong.

My definition of a home game is one where your fans greatly outnumber that of the opposing teams.

Part of our marketability to fans, donors and recruits is that we are NYCs school. We have the Mecca of bball in our backyard. It’s a huge advantage being able to sell to recruits that once a year you’re going to play in the most famous arena in the world. And it’ll be nationally televised and the arena will be packed.

And it’s fun to be able to bring friends and family to a game since tickets to the RAC are going to be hard to come by for the foreseeable future.

Duke has a multi decade relationship with MSG, and always brings a quality opponent.

Agree with everything said above for non league games, but putting yourself at competitive disadvantage for league home games. That’s the issue.

Could effect seeding in B1G tourney which as we have seen can result in a play in game in the big Dance or even not making the tourney.

When all is said and done, its the Ws that matters most.

I get that - and it’s not unfair. But if that game is the decider, we don’t deserve to be in. Our goal should be to be a premier program with the expectation we’re going to win 12+ a year, not one that slides into the tourney by the skin of our teeth.

As we have seen one game has made a difference and put us in a playoff game or not at all.

“If that game is the decider, we don’t deserve to be in in.” Dont buy that at all.

We should consistently be in the top 4 of the conference - with no stupid Quad 4 losses.

The solution is simple

Schedule a elite non conference opponent at msg....or play in one of the many local big time showcase games in the area

But we know why...

Izzo schedules one of the toughest OOC schedules every year, playing many of the top programs in the country , even though he doesn’t need to do so, and has often struggled in these games, so I am pretty sure he isn’t afraid to play at the RAC. Just a year or two ago, he had his team playing on an aircraft carrier . . .
It’s true he schedules top programs OOC. It’s also true that after we beat Izzo by 20+ at the RAC, he keeps getting the B1G to schedule us at MSG. He doesn’t want to play us at the RAC.

To be honest, let’s start with the premise that the MSG game has to be a marquee matchup - after football season is over (TV viewership). That means you’re in the conference schedule so basically you’ve Michigan, Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan State, Purdue, PSU, Maryland (in the future, sure, the West Coast adds). And we want to play MSG.

Which of those schools do you think would have the least number of opposing fans? MSU might be the best option. Michigan in 2020 was a 50/50 - I mean, I went to the game with a Michigan fan.

I do get the argument about the home game, just not sure it’s that big of a deal. I’d prefer MSU at the garden over any of those other teams, strictly from a headcount perspective.

It’s a big deal. Last two times at RAC, we blew out MSU. Last time at MSG we lost a star player from which we never really recovered and we’re losing at halftime.

More importantly perhaps, no other school gives up home conference games….

Well except PSU and the irony of irony’s, they do it to go to smaller arenas so that they can have a home court advantage like Rutgers has at the RAC/JMAC.

What about Illinois? They were a final 8 team last year, and Duke had a scheduling agreement to play them this year.
Maybe the B1G which forces RU to give up home games at MSG could have encouraged MSG to have Duke play Rutgers. Maybe the B1G could have encouraged Illinois to not accept that game. Isn’t the B1G supposed to be supportive of all its conference members?
You don’t think that’s a slap in the face to RU? Where was our AD when all this went down?
SMH.

We will out number Sparty fans minimum 10-1 For this game you will be able to sit in any section of the garden that your willing to pay for. Season tickets at the RAC are ridiculously underpriced. Be a man and spend some money.

Never money issue for me. Although recognize that it could be. Sympathetic but not my issue.
It’s the fairness and competitive disadvantage that bothers me.
We great outnumbered Sparty last time but the Garden in their infinite wisdom gave many of the prime seats half court to MSU.

I’m sure it’s never a money issue with this fanbase. As I said you will be able to sit anywhere you want.

The BIG had no involvement in this, this game had been agreed to over a year ago between the schools, and Duke, through their long-standing relationship, was able to secure the Garden.

Our Head Coach pushed very, very hard to get this game, but our crybaby fans complain because it will cost them extra money to see it in person, as opposed to it being played in the RAC.

Come on man, injuries happen and we won - no one cares about the half time score. That crowd was loud as hell making the comeback - outscoring them by 12 in the second (even with the injury) - that kind of undermines the whole crowd point, btw.

Again B1G can exert pressure.
They force RU to play there.
Illinois can play a non conference game in the Garden?
Rutgers has to give up home conference games to play in the Garden.
Anybody object? Our AD?
Illinois or B1G don’t care?
If they don't, not very nice conference mates or conference itself.

RU wanted the game there.

And you’d also be asking MSU to come into a hostile crowd and call it neutral. Home game is fair.

MSG is largely booked all fall and winter between the Knicks, Rangers, concerts and things like the circus. For the few open slots they have, MSG can pick and choose whatever they think will maximize their revenues. For example, the Duke Illinois game comes with a corporate sponsor. The BIG has zero influence over MSG, all they can do is propose a matchup to them, if MSG likes it and has an open spot for, they can book it, and if they aren’t interested there is nothing the BIG can do. MSG really doesn’t care if they have any BIG games, they have way more supply of events than they can ever book.

  • UConn gives up Gampel to play in Hartford. Every year.
  • Villanova gives up the Ski Chalet to play in Wells Fargo. Every year.
  • Penn State gave up Bryce Jordan to play at the Palestra.
  • I could swear Purdue and Indiana played a game at Gainbridge recently.
I will say this, though. If given the choice, we would be able to schedule a marquee opponent OUT OF CONFERENCE at MSG, and keep all of our "home" games at the RAC. But we can't seem to get a marquee opponent at MSG for whatever reason. That being the case, I don't mind MSU at MSG, as it is quite an "event".

St. John's gives up Carnesecca to play at MSG several times per year.

I'd take Rutgers-St. John's at MSG annually as long as Pitino is there and St. John's program has energy and intrigue. All B1G home games at RAC.

Both teams claim to be New York's team. St. John's pretends MSG is their home court. For those losing sleep over NET calculations, Rutgers might get it counted as away game. Reality is Rutgers and St. John's would meet in the middle at a neutral court - the greatest arena in the world MSG - and battle it out.

St. John’s and Nova do it because their home arenas are ridiculously small. And at the very least still in the same city/state. Distance far closer. Two private schools. Not major State University. Big East is the only league that does this and has been doing this for years and not random seasons.

I have noted PSU which is hilarious as they moved to SMALLER arenas to gain a home court advantage at the Palestra and Rec Hall that they don’t have at the Bryce Jordan Morgue. Let’s play PSU at the Barn!!!

I don’t recall Purdue or Indiana giving up a home game to play At Gainbridge. And if it did happen, it was a one time only event. We don’t see Michigan State v Michigan at Joe Lewis Arena, do we? Far different than RU v MSU at the Garden.

The best example is UConn. Wonder how their fans really feel? I know it doesn’t work for football which is why they are roaming the football desert/wasteland.

They do have an 85% winning percentage at Gamel. Amusingly I couldn’t find their success rate in Hartford. In any event have been doing it for years and part of their deal.

My premise and argument stands, I would never give away home league conference games to the Garden.

If Pike promised Ace and Dylan I’m perfectly fine with it and I get it. Pike is a man of his word. And Pike previously was none too pleased with the Garden games which many of you refuse to acknowledge.

However, I am extremely worried about the dangerous precedent when the B1G or MSG wants another league game two years from now. Will it ever stop? How much longer are we indentured?

And the fact that it is MSU again is just ridiculous and that MSU skips the RAC again defies logic. Where there’s smoke there’s fire!
