The 2nd coming of Gavin.

The TD to Dremel was pretty nice. He's capable of throwing over the middle, but those are always riskier throws and he does tend to lock on to a WR, which is a bad habit when throwing over the middle against well designed defensive schemes where a QB can miss where a defender is, leading to INT chances.
Agreed. I tried hard to find cases where he surveyed the field, Really hard to find. He immediately looks where he is going to throw the ball. It is usually near the sideline of long.. so he just throws it away.. or tucks and runs.. if that first receiver is not there.

It is strange to criticize after piling up yards and completions.. but the criticism is still worthy. They add in the inaccuracies.. makes me think of Vedral that way (and Wimsatt).. a completion for far fewer yards than you need.. nearly worthless.

Saw a comment earlier... throwing into the rush.. sarcasm about how they killed us by seeing where the blitz was coming from and just running a route there and easy completion.. for huge YAC too... we do not do that. Who's fault is it? OC? QB? WR? TE? HC? Might be any of them.. multiples of them.. do the coaches know the answer?

AK or GW?…doesn’t matter…we still suck on offense with either of them…both of them are NOT consistent

That would be Athan. Lack of accuracy on long passes and not able to go to his second read.
Did you even watch the game or just read about it? Did you see the stats? Anyone can claim anything on a message board, but you have to consider facts. Athan has bad throws, but most of them this season are at least catchable. I wish Gavin well, but Athan is our guy now, and I’m very happy about that.

I don’t understand bad throws that are catchable? Are you referring to the 4th n 2 to a wide open Miller?

I don't even know the name for RU's offense.
Its part pro, part option, part West Coast imo.
Many AK passes are meant to be short quick hits so no reason to scan the passing tree.
Coaches want the darts.

He's pretty good at the quick hits - sometimes too fast but he has modulated as well.
He's scrambling around a lot and that doesn't help with long passes.
He can miss on the sideline "safety passes" but he's made some excellent long passes as well.

Gavin and AK are apples/oranges.
Most weight trainers know long armed guys have trouble lifting a lot - short armed lifters shine there.
In similar fashion, Gavin was long and gangly and not well built for quick passes (hard wind-up).
The fact he overthrew illustrated he was built for longer passes (like Eli).
Kentucky coaches remarked about his skill with longer balls.

Unfortunately RU couldn't block for longer passes in 2023 (GS said) so he rarely got to air things out,.
He also didn't have long ball WRs who got passed DBs and open for the money shots.
Miller would have been a big improvement over 2023 WRs but who knows if OL could have handled it.

GW wouldn't have had more short completions but passing aside he would have been able to run better.
AK only has 3 TDs since Akron (6 games).
I think its pretty certain GW would have had more since he was better on broken plays and red zone.
GW only needed a decent sized opening in LOS and he could gallop

No he didn’t - Gavin rarely scrambled. Most of his rush yards were on design run plays for him.

The apple of your eye Gavin was just in a series at Kentucky. Completely botched two sideline routes. Overthrew receivers both times, second time into hands of defender, who dropped it. Not good. Announcers recounted his throwing problems at Rutgers.
0/5 passing for day.

Just because he was kept on a leash doesn't mean he wasn't a good scrambler. Announcers often expected him to run more in games but GS hates running QBs (Teel said GS told him not to run). Only RU gets a top dual threat and then doesn't use him. As it was GW set RU QB record for run yards (led B1G as well)

Two scrambles vs Michigan (a good tape - GW had best stats vs Michigan of all QBs that played them)
18 seconds in

We are 4-4. Does he give us a good chance to win? His best throw is to the outside to a wide open WR. Can’t throw over the middle at all.
Coaches haven’t let him, same as Wimsatt. This week, with no RU D at all, they did let him throw a few posts, plus Dremel’s TD was over the middle. Maybe there’s hope the offense will use the entire width of the field going forward.

We all knew Gavin wasn’t a good passer. I just miss that power running game and that AK’s passing ability is marginally better.

Did you WATCH Gavin last night with UK? A couple good runs then threw a horrible pass for a pick in the end zone from the 3 yard line. Of course. That’s Gavin.

This thread is laughable.
No, I was watching the Yankees strand all the runners in game 2.

Second coming of Gavin????

Very Funny Laughing GIF

20 pts. AK is part of the issue. He is very lucky to be playing with D Miller. Totally understand why he was benched at Minny.
Wait, he is lucky to have a receiver who can run routes and catch a ball? Isn't that what they are supposed to do? Imagine how great Gavin would look pushing the ball down field with Miller!!

This! GW is a pathetic passer. Frankly, he sucks. He’s down to a 40% completion rate this year while their junior starter is at 57%. What’s his excuse this year??? They don’t have Miller? -lol

Athan is exactly what we expected him to be. He’s a good upgrade at the position vs last year. All we needed was decent QB play this year and we would be a very good team. Unfortunately that was based on having a lock down defense but the defense turned from good to poop. If defense was good we would not have lost 4 in a row. Does Athan miss throws and limit the offense? YES. But can we blame him for this crap…not really.

I see these as offensive truths:

-RU wr corp last year was bad. No threats.
- Gavin was an inaccurate passer along with bad wr corp was a bad combo = conservative playcalling
- Gavin was a better runner than Athan
- Wr corp is light years ahead of last season
- Athan more accurate than Gavin and waaay better passer with more decisive throws and better receivers
- If Gavin was a good passer he would get a start at Kentucky. 3rd qb now playing over him.
- RU actually has TE receptions this season, None last season
- Athan has poor placement of balls to opposite shoulder of wr routes which leads to breakdown of routes and drops
-Athan does not know how to slide for first downs but can get yards with is feet.
-Athan best passer at RU in ten years.
-RU offense can average 200-250yds in the air in remaining games if committed to the pass game.

GO RU

Athan also just threw for over 300 yards without Strong Fletcher and Konekopa

I just saw it. I have no issue with that int. It’s 4th n 1, down by 2 scores, late in the 4th, one option rout. Better than throwing it away or taking a sack. That’s what drives me crazy about AK. Down 2 scores, 3rd n 11, he checks it down for a completion for 3 yds.

Gavin didn’t have the green light to “find” anyone. The script was - this is the pass play. It’s exactly where you are supposed to go with it. Try not to oversell it. If the play breaks down - throw the ball away. That was plan B and he did as told without hesitation. There really was no plan C because we didn’t need one. He got the ball out before being sacked and threw it out of bounds.

Having better receivers to find? Why would this matter when your QB isn’t trusted to look for anyone. Thats a fact. I can’t believe this is even a discussion.

@rufan4life this is another tarded post for example

AK can make every throw on the field and he's done it here so we have evidence of such. Kind of hard to elevate your game when you've got pressure in your face on almost every throw. watching the game, you could see his feet and arm were speeding up so his internal clock was racing which naturally impacts his throws. Not perfect but he's not the issue on the team

He’s not an issue but he has room to grow. A better thrown fade on our first drive would have resulted in 6. Instead we settled for a field goal. Better ball placement is his biggest opportunity for improvement. That’s what we need from him to beat better opponents like USC. You look at Miller Moss and he was throwing darts all over the place.

Nevertheless, Athan played his best game yet, and he gives us a chance to win.

Agreed. He’s not losing us games. D is giving up a ton of yards. Frankly, we shouldn’t have beaten Washington giving up 521 yards.

Sky isn’t falling, but it feels like we’re going to fight to get to 6-6. Long term direction of the program is still up. Think Greg may have to step in and run the D again.

If we had the defensive players that we had for our first few games, we would have been bowl eligible by now. Our D is depleted. Schiano implied that in the last two press conferences. USC marched up and down the field. It is what it is. We have to face reality and move on.

There is a phrase in psychology called “pessimism avoidance syndrome” where we don’t acknowledge the reality of a situation due to our need for a coping mechanism. Usually, it is helpful, because it allows us to have a positive outlook but in cases like this, it masks the reality of our current situation.

See, that’s the logic fail so common here. Being better than the last guy isn’t good enough if the last guy was utterly terrible. AK being better than GW, and Schiano being better than Ash are not things to be happy about. Neither is any good at their role, so what if better than the last guy.

Miller threw 131 of those yards. 😜

It’s the most ridiculous theory. Gavin did not have the coaches’ trust to make a read. AK does. The two situations are night and day on this point alone. Miller’s so called talent would be irrelevant unless you trust the QB to be patient and keep looking for a receiver who has the skills to break open and find space. How is this not obvious? For a quick play targeting a spot that skill is irrelevant. Either the defense has a good read on the original play or not.

Look at last year every throw vs this year. We did not have WRs consistently get as open as Miller. Not even close. AK’s issue in the red zone is that he needs to fit the throws into tight windows and he hasn’t done it. KC is doing the same with AK as GW. No trust to throw over the middle. Lots of jump balls to the corner. Difference is we can’t power it in from inside the 5.

Trust needs to be earned. GW possessed outstanding, physical skills but couldn't process what was going on in front of him. That comes from inside the program. He had three years here at Rutgers and was handed the keys but couldn't drive the car. GW was 3/10...30% vs Auburn. Sound familiar?

Inside which program? Kentucky is his program now. Maybe it's inside his head.

But but but excluding drops and throw aways, he is like 8/10.

Multiple things can be true:

  1. Wimsatt was a bad QB and needed to be replaced
  2. AK may be a slight upgrade but isn't the full upgrade we needed
  3. AK was the best upgrade we could accomplish (I feel like his history with OC KC may have tipped the scales a little here and AK was viewed as a better upgrade than he actually was by HC GS/OC KC). We may have actually been able to get a better QB but AK's history came into play.
