We've had occasional discussions here about urban growth patterns. So I've linked to a New York Times article about a young and somewhat unconventional couple (at least the woman is) who had the choice between buying one of two apartments in Brooklyn, or a larger place in Union City. They picked the place in Union City; it was larger, it had parking available, and the taxes are much less. . The woman feels she's lost some of her "street cred," but that matters less to her, she says, now that she's thirty. I would think that many other young couples, even childless ones like this couple, would make the same choice.
