now that we can stop the ridic talk of how many wins we need for the NCAA and what do we need to do for the NIT...let’s set the realistic goal for this year

A competitive 4-5 in league play...and 15-15

Not gonna be easy

Have five games against Likely NCAA teams

Michigan
At Michigan state
Iowa
At Iowa
Minnesota

And a road bias against the teams That are not ncaa bound
At Illinois
At northwestern
At Indiana
Penn State

Getting 15-15 and heading to the United center with a 8-12 record would be a major stepping stone for this team

That’s the program goal right now..and with the youth we have...that would be major progress for this program with just about everything returning for next year and the additional of two very good pieces

That’s my script and optimism for the season...and I think it happens

Shack actually you're being even more optimistic about 4 more wins for us in conference play. At the start of the season, I was hoping for 6 wins. If we reach that goal and somehow win one or even two more I will be over the moon.

I am glad you started off your post with the sobering reality of talking NIT or even the NCAA. That's just beyond unrealistic for this young team. They're not quite ready for prime time just yet. Next year we take an even bigger step, but the progress we have made thus far is very, very good. The only major hiccup that I see so far was the Fordham game and Pike trying to figure out the pieces in the beginning of the year that may have cost us two wins. The fact that we're 11-10 instead of 13-8 is not a big deal. I predicted we would be better this year than last year and may only win 12-14 games. I think we're right on track.

The goal should be a winning record after 12 straight losing seasons. As to winning 4 more games I don't see that happening because Rutgers will be the underdog in every game except Penn State at home. The offense is too inconsistent and the home games will be against 3 NCAA bound teams.

I posted the other day about being pretty happy with getting 3 more wins, so 4 more would be awesome. More than that is always possible, but shouldn't be expected.

Before the Indiana game, I posted that 2 to 4 more wins were likely, with 3 the likely result, and 4 an outside chance with a home upset of either Iowa or Minnesota.

Well, we got the IU victory as hoped, we have to believe we will beat PSU, and in my opinion the only other winnable games are home against Iowa and Minnesota, and away against Northwestern and Illinois. Maybe we can get two of those four, but I can’t see winning three of them.

I agree the “goal” should be to get another four wins. Just not sure we can do it.

I ageee it is not going to be easy ...but it the goal to reach for...and it can happen

Remember this stat ....

11-2 when holding teams under 70

0-8 when score 70 plus this year

We need to get teams to play our pace and style ...if we can do that, we got a real
Shot at 15-15

Let’s start by upsetting Michigan. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

My goal is 10th place. Might be the same goal as Shack in the end.

Development from 5-6 players on the roster trumps everything.

I’ll sign up for Myles, Ron, Mathis and Caleb improving and looking like guys that will play major roles next year.

Winning home games establishes something for next year and we have started to do that with recent home games.

The X factor is the home crowd and how difficult does the RAC become the remaining 4 games. If it becomes tougher, then winning 3 at home becomes possible.

I think McConnell playing in Ohio today, where he prepped last year, gave him the boost needed to get back on track. The kid seems to play solid on the road in spots, which is a good sign for those trying to find another road win. McConnell on the road at Northwestern, Indiana, Iowa and Illinois are spots where he can help.

The key (in my opinion) is getting Geo to play hard for the time he's in the game. He did that in the last 3 games but needs to get his minutes down to 30-31 to be effective. 3 straight 35 -36+ minute games is going to be factoring into whether RU can win close games with FTs and McConnell is the only piece that can help Geo at the PG spot.

I think we will need 7 to escape playing the first day

The path

@ Northwestern
Minnesota
Penn State
@ Indiana
Not sure if you meant 3 of those or not. All 4 would be 8 wins and 4/5 finish to go 15 and 15 into tourney. Then we have to go 1 and to finish 16 and 16. ( I know you clearly know this stuff).

I personally feel like 3-6 finish and 1 and 1 tourney to end up at 15 - 17. Fordham hurts.

But if so and winning 8 B1G games would be HUGE for this season.

I want at least one unexpected win. A victory in which the team and fans can really hang our hats on entering next season.

Our first opportunity: Tuesday vs. the blue and maize.

I think Minnesota and Iowa are our best chances...think we get one but not both. There will be a game that all the frosh and Geo/Eugene are on the same page. Looks like Iowa will be ranked soon, Minny may be ranked although their schedule is tough.

yes 3 of those...obviously at Indiana will be tough but its in play....they are a notch below Ohio State,

I some how think Iowa at home on sat night could be a wildcard opportunity.

Edit: ha, didn't see your other post. I feel the same..1 of minny or Iowa.

It’s gonna be tough.

Of the 4 games we could win:

Illinois
Northwestern
Penn State
Indiana

3 are on the road.

We need to steal a home game out of:

Michigan
Iowa
Minnesota

Based on record Illinois would be the most logical selection along with Penn State at home. The problem is that Illinois plays a high tempo game creating turnovers and fast break baskets. They could run Rutgers off the court similar to the Minnesota game on the road,

The goal to me isn’t a particular record but to not only not finish last but stay in the top 10 and get a first round bye. With Indiana’s win against MSU though, that’s now gonna be really tough.
