The PSU Lion "roar" and bags into stadium

I have been saying since midway through the first quarter: If I never hear a lion roar again it will be too soon. more than extremely annoying.

I think it was wayyyyy overdone.

And don't get me started about bags into the stadium. Had to walk all the way back to parking lot 26 with my perfectly ok for rutgers stadium clear bag because it was "too big". After I finally got back to the stadium (40 minutes later) I saw people INSIDE with the same bag...... How aggravating....

ah, the bags in the stadium. the ones they say are allowed on their website but didn't allow into the stadium? the one I had to empty into the gallon zip lock bag they gave me and then fold up and shove down the back of my pants to get into the stadium so that I could use it in the stadium? I had two friends with little wristlet purses who were also turned away and had to hide them and get back in that line.

I saw a RU family get turned away at the ticket person because they didn't have a ticket for their 9 month old that was strapped to the mom's chest.

I had a good time while there but psu was a one and done for me and the other 21 people I went with.

I don't plan on returning. The security people were extremely nasty (they should notify you about the strict bag policy on the ticket or something), and about 50% of the fans were also pretty nasty.

Ohio State last year was much better.....

I checked the bag policy before I went. the problem was that they didn't follow what is clearly written on their own website about bag policies. I made a comment to the information people when I walked into the stadium and we are following up with our psu ticket rep today.

we hired our own bus and, despite having a pre -paid tailgating bus parking pass, were directed to 5 different places before they finally allowed us to park. I even tried to bribe a parking guy with $200 just to let us park because it was getting ridiculous, but he wouldn't take the bribe. (mostly because it was the $10,000 and above donor lot and our Scarlet tailgate would have clearly sent a "I bribed the parking guy' message.

The cat noise is supposed to be maddening to the opposition and their fans. I remember it at Giants Stadium the night Graber got in Joe Pa's face.
How they piped in that sound for our home game I'll never know, but they did. I wanted to shoot myself.

Consistency with security is a problem at many venues. I hope they correct that in the future. It use to be much better prior to Sandusky because it was all in house. They now require background checks and other child abuse training which cut the number of people willing to spend full day doing training on child abuse each year just to work 7 days a year. Now they have an external company who is really bad.

As for the family it was their own fault for not checking to see if the kid needed a ticket or not. The policy at Beaver Stadium has always been any one outside of the womb requires a ticket. I have seen other venues with the same rules. Why they did not check is beyond me.

I was in that lot. No way the attendant could have allowed you in. The spots are numbered. I was with a group that had 6 spots for the last 20 years in the same place.

What if you're partially in the womb?

hahahahahaahhaahhahahahaha

Didn't see the "honor Joe" memorial. Spent time at the official RU tailgate before the game, which was very nice.

I shoved my bag down my shorts and got it in. It was so chaotic at Gate D where we entered at about 7:30 that they really couldn't a thorough check. I'm sure it would have been confiscated if any of the security had seen it.

You went?

So how were you treated my companion in fish mongering?

Older people and "adults" were actually very nice and welcoming. Even were offered food and beer at one of their taligates. A lot of what I guess were students were assholes. The part I find laughable is when they run up to you and yell "F--k Jersey" or "Jersey sucks" in your face considering how many players they have from a place they look down on so much.

@PSU_Nut what was most disturbing to me was the "honor joe" memorial. candles, signs, flowers, people actually looked like they were praying there.
I agree it is really creepy. I never venture over that side of the stadium so I never seen it.

Probably should have warned you guys just not to bring bags. It slows you down getting in, and there's the whole consistently applying the guidelines. Post 9-11 world things kind of s*ck for getting into the stadium. But it's pretty much on par with going to Disney, Sea World, etc.

We used to be able to go back to our tailgates at halftime and enjoy another beverage, ah the good ole days.

Wait until you play a typically good Michigan team (you haven't yet) and have to listen to countless renditions of "Hail to the Victors" while they're grinding you.

I was thinking the same thing when I heard it, that I recalled it being played at the Meadowlands but then thought it couldn't be true because that was our home game.

The memorial was right up from our tailgate so I saw it throughout the day and yes it was really creepy. You would think Christ himself had risen from the dead in that same location the way people stood around and whispered and took pictures of each other.

Don't know about a return trip, granted I had a great weekend but I have never been more uncomfortable during a game. If I do return I would probably just stay at my cousin's RV and watch the game on TV.

My wife (who was a real champ sitting through the game in the rain) noticed I think 7 starters for TTFP are from NJ.......

One of the rules they’ve always been good at enforcing is the “everybody needs a ticket” rule. We have a thread every season asking if you can get a kid in without a ticket. I’m usually able to get a cheap one for my little girl, although I did sneak her in as a 4 month old.

As far as the bag rule goes, it has never been enforced uniformly. A year or two ago the Nittany Lion club gave out free bags to members. They sold a very similar bag at the stores downtown. Basically the exact bag without the official logo. My wife got in with the official bag, but they were turning people away with the replica.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the stadium food choices. They’re just awful. My wife and daughter have dietary restrictions and it is just impossible to get anything in the stadium. I guess they figure everybody loads up at the tailgates and doesn’t really care about other options.

On the parking issue, I can honestly say I have never heard of a problem before. Everything is color coordinated and marked very clearly. As another poster mentioned, they cannot let you park in the high net worth lots as they are reserved spots.

The lion roar is annoying to many PSU fans that I know, including myself.

I’m glad to hear most had a positive experience.

I was pretty sure my bribery wasn't going to work. but you can't blame a girl for trying

our group had a great experience other than our Rutgers flag getting stolen from our tailgate and, of course, the outcome of the game. We were even very fortunate and only waited about 35 minutes to leave the area we parked in. no traffic in either direction for us.

I've been attending games at Beaver Stadium since I was an undergrad in the 80s. I never liked the lion's roar over the PA and always thought it sounded like a toilet flushing. Northwestern uses a roar that sounds almost the same. Strangely enough, I don't notice it anymore and can't recall hearing once on Saturday. It's like people living near an airport who eventually tune out the noise. Virginia Tech plays a turkey gobble over their PA. Nothing says fearsome quite like gobbling turkey.

Yeah a handful of us were talking about the roar up in our section. It was definitely annoying! I think it was fine for a periodic use, but it's wayyyy overused.
I think we got into the stadium about 30-35 min before the game and security barely even looked in the bag my friend had.
I saw handful of women walking back away from the front with their tiny clutch purses which were apparently too big. They were PSU fans too.

Also saw some people walking back to their cars with seats that had backs on them - not allowed either. Gate E had the nasty security guy we encountered. The ticket taker was letting us in, but the security guy came up and said "no!", those bags aren't allowed. Since we were already scanned in, the ticket person had no idea how to "unscan" me so I could bring the bag back to the car. They finally figured out how to do that so I could get back into the stadium after the long walk back to the car.

Gate E...yep...that was my gate too. the nasty bald security guy.

and @DJ Spanky it was more disturbing in person. I didn't get a pic of the people praying or paying their respects or whatever they were doing.

OSU was a blast to attend. Friendly folks and great entertainment around town. Only the outcome of that game sucked.

At first it seemed cute, but after awhile did anyone else find it extremely annoying?

Its no more annoying than "That's another Rutgers First Down" is to opponents at out home games.

As far as the bag policy goes, I have a strict "travel light" policy of my own ever since security at the Texas Bowl prevented us from bringing a football in to the stadium (we ended up tossing it over the fence). It did seem like PSU's was stricter than most - basically no pocketbooks for women.

wrong. at Gate E it wasn't just "no pocketbooks" it was no wristlets, which is specifically in their bag policy as an OK item to bring in. It was no NFL type clear bags with a strap, which is again, in their policy as OK. as stated by RU and PSU fans above, consistency is what the problem was.
