Thoughts on Wimsatt

I don’t give credence to the high school excuse at this point. Question is, will he better than Vedral by Week 1. He is not better now, which is unsettling in my opinion.
Agree and the future certainly might be bright with Gavin but it’s going to take time so I’ll say it for the tenth time, we need at least one QB in every class and we now need a transfer QB unless we want the same season we had this year.

Were you playing big time college football as a freshman ?
Of curse not. But Anthony Davis was just two weeks older than Wimsatt and starting on RU’s O-line as freshman. Many true freshman get significant playing time. Some of them are Wimsatt’s age.

As I said, he is light on experience and coaching, but he’s not as young some make it seem.

Those players you talked about had a ton more practice with the team. Gavin literally walk away from his senior prom and onto the field. Big difference especially for a QB

That’s experience and in both of my posts I said he’s light on experience.

Davis had a full senior HS year and full preseason camp. And he played inside at guard his freshman year.

This. Okay fine forget the age. Now would have Anthony Davis who had been a freshman QB with hardly any reps in short amount of practice would have been better than Gavin in this situation? No. I don’t even understand why this is even argued about. Facts are he hasn’t practiced and learned enough yet. **** the “you wish he was comments” cause that’s opinions not facts.

But you compared apples to oranges saying other freshman have played. My point is no one ( that i know of) ever gave up his senior year of high school and played meaningful minutes like he did this year.

But he just turned 18. That means you were 17 in college? He would be normal 18 year old senior in high school in NJ.

Yes. It‘s not unusual. Where the age cutoff is Oct 31 to start kindergarten all of the kids with September and Oct birthdays (who aren’t held back by their parents) will go off to college at 17.

In my day Nov 30 was the parochial school cutoff and 1/4 of my HS graduating class would have headed off to college at 17.

Tom Savage was 18 and 4 months with one summer camp under his belt when he was named starter two games into the season. Chase Dodd was 18 and 6 months when he started.

Wimsatt is 18 and 2 months with four months of college coaching.

Granted, Savage and others like him are exceptions. But Wimsatt isn’t a high schooler on a college field anymore. He’s like a freshman getting on the field in September.

I must have missed when Wimsatt missed a wide open Randy Moss on several deep balls.
I saw it. George Kittles missed an easy catch. Was upset they gave up on John Riggins running up the middle for an easy 10 yard clip at a time

Someone with a birthday in August would be extremely young for their class and would probably be at a disadvantage as well. Imagine that same freshman come in in the middle of the season, has to learn the whole playbook without practicing and plays multiple snaps in a bowl team vs a top 25 team. Probably not fair to expect a whole lot.
I wasn't posting that as a comment on Wimsatt's performance.

Missing summer camp is huge. Once you get into the season most of the time is spent on game prep. There is just not a lot of time for player development in practice.

@Shelby65 you may be the dumbest person I've ever seen on this board.

Not every kid comes in like Trevor Lawrence. And most players are ranked on what they will be, that doesn't mean in the kids first what, 30 college snaps he's going to light the world on fire

We have fans who every single time a new quarterback comes in they hope for the qb to be playing at the level of an upperclassmen, a natural program changer and when it doesn't happen write them off.

Gavin will be fine, he showed flashes today. Likely just started getting (maybe?) first team reps. He also got exactly 1 (one) meaningful rep all year vs Illinois and made it count.

Now going from HS fb to being the scout team QB for a few months to then being thrown into the Gator Bowl with no meaningful game reps under his belt - what did you think was going to happen?

For perspective - In Tom Savage’s second start vs Florida International he was 11/28 (39%) for 185 yards, 0 touchdowns… he went on to be a Freshman All-American… do you think our fanbase was saying he is not good or awful after that game? Come on folks… Wimsatt looked raw today as he should but showed flashes of things to come… patience is a virtue

Many forget how this got built the first time around. Or weren't fans until the team had already built that foundation. Teel sucked as a freshman. Savage kind of sucked as a freshman. Nova sucked as a freshman. It takes time... and whoever compared GW to AD is ridiculous. QB requires so much more development than an OG.

Its hard to even say Gavin sucks! Or will suck! Because we have no clue… you cannot base much of anything off this year, certainly not today.

What I saw was confidence gained with each rep. Smooth as butter when he runs, good arm, hitting easier throws in 2H. It’ll come

Our fan base, like most, are so quick to anoint someone a savior or scream HE SUCKS! depending on the previous play (which is under review).

I get it. He’s not as good as Michael Vick, for example, was as a freshman. But then again, Michael Vick finished high school and redshirted for a year. Again, Michael Vick didn’t even play as a freshman.

Naturally, there are examples of very young guys who crushed it as young freshmen, but maturing and maturity actually matter. It’s just a fact.

Michael Vick was a one in a million talent and like you said, he wasn't starting games until he was in his second year in the program.

Another example that comes to mind is Johnny Manziel. He was ridiculously good in his first year playing. But he did redshirt as a freshman. He was two years older than Wimsatt is now when he started his first college football game.

We all want him to live up to his potential. And yes, some of us were hoping he'd be good enough in August to unseat Vedral. But if that doesn't happen, its not the end of the world. You can see that when you combine his skillsets with experience, he's going to be very good. He just needs to keep working.

Of course for the future he’ll be age ready and prepared. I’m talking about a game like the bowl game we just played with the limited amount of practice he had with the team. Sure maybe influence couple weeks of practice than I’m sure he’ll be able to be game ready. He just haven’t gotten enough practice yet. That’s all.

Mostly true . But savage didn’t suck as a freshman. He sucked as a sophomore

Caleb Williams has studs on offense.
True ,but the talent gap between the two would still be evident. GW is far behind in his development. Time will tell. Getting rid of Gleeson ( not happening) would be a good start.

Context is everything. Same people “concerned” about Gavin also wondering how our defense got so gassed in the second half yesterday. Just 0 clue about anything and never involved in a football program.

Do you think during game weeks the coaching staff is wasting reps on the starters’ bodies on fundamental player development of freshmen? No. Sorry. Spring ball and summer camp and Gavin will be lighting it up come next season

“Far behind in his development?” That makes ZEEO sense. He came in a yearly early. He’s literally WELL AHEAD of things.

Need to fix the O-line before we go judging the freshman QB. I thought the line played better, but it wasn't going against B1G talent either.

Decent protection should allow him to settle in.
We're Rutgers fans, gotta have hope, right?

You sound ridiculous. The kid should be starting his lasts semester in high school rather than playing against the #2 ACC team that was 10-2 and ranked most of the season. Most high school seniors need freshman year to acclimate to the academic demands let alone deal with playing QB at the highest level of competition.

Johnny Football was asked about wimsatt and how he did.
Langdin said he turned 18 what a month ago?
He did good.

My birthday is late November, I didn't turn 18 until my first semester was almost over. Then again, there were people in the grade below me who were older because I think they changed the cutoff date the year I started school or something. It was annoying when I was a senior and some juniors were able to drive before I was.

Gavin is going to make a big leap in how he develops from now until the fall. We as a fan base need to for once be patient and understand not just his youth but the development going on around him. Do not underestimate the bowl games positives yesterday for these young players . One thing… he doesn’t panic …doesn’t have happy feet. Let’s continue to build depth and quality at all positions.

Phenomenal pocket presence for an 18-year old.

The last kid we had who stood tall in the pocket and was good as a frosh …Tom Savage. Savage didn’t have the overall running capabilities of Gavin Wimsatt and all who were there to see it then realized why the O line is vitally important to a QB’s health. Tom just looked like an NFL guy in the pocket Gavin will be fine.

Are you pointing out the fact William’s had better players upfront or is it you feel Williams is better ?
