you are asking the wrong guy. Outside of Myles Johnson, as of now, I don’t see any top half B1G talent on our roster. All guys are young and it doesn’t mean sum of parts can’t be greater than whole.

IMO

Mathis can be a lock down defender.
Caleb can be a 3ball man.
Gio is GIO...and has a world of potential: needs to bring it every nite.
Young...if he ever plays under control, his pure speed is AMAZING...dishes and can hit the 3.
Mulcahy: needs to shoot more...but his TO/A ratio is GREAT.

We can beat a several teams....both at the RAC and hopefully on the road.

I'm not giving up on RU breaking into the top 10.

GO RU!

Maryland. I know they are ranked 6 but they are over rated. Harvard ( who is very good, along with Yale and Penn for you Ivy nuts ) had the lead for 35 minutes yesterday. They have gotten off to slow starts and their starting 5 better bring it every night because I question their depth. I am putting them 4th so far, because they are undefeated but I am not convinced they will end up that high.
:Eyes: :See:
This is the deepest team Maryland has had in the Mark Turgeon era. They bring guys off the bench that could start elsewhere. Also their starting 5 is a bit fluid. Started 4 guards vs. Marquette.

Not so impressed with their bench. If their starting five is not all locked in , no one on that bench is going to bale them out. They have struggled with slow starts. As I type this I see they are up on Marquette big at half. But I just checked the box and the starters have 33 of their 42.

They won 84–63 and the starters scored 71 of the points .

Their bench had just 13 points (Marquette's had 4) but Maryland's bench also had 8 rebounds and three steals. One guy drew a couple of offensive fouls on Marquette. Their bench is also full of young guys who will only get better as the season progresses. Today Maryland played like a top 5 team. Marquette's Markus Howard is going to see Maryland defenders in his sleep for a while.

I'm a Maryland fan and I think Goru's comments are valid. Until today they really haven't played like a top five team. We'll see how it goes going forward. It's not very reassuring to see the Terrapins trailing Temple and Harvard for most of the game.

As Russ said, however, it's hard to know exactly who the starters are, so it might not be useful to imply that only the five "starters" can be relied upon. In fact, I can't remember before today a game where both Ayala and Wiggins were both in the starting lineup (I'm sure it happened, but not often). Moreover, I would contend that there's a lot better ways to evaluate a bench than merely by scoring totals.

The point with Maryland is that there are 4-5 guys on the bench who can come in and provide legit quality minutes while giving the "starters" a rest. I doubt you'll find many basketball people who aren't willing to agree that the Terps have a lot of depth...

3 most impressive teams so far are Maryland, Michigan and Ohio St., MSU is MSU. Indiana have won a couple good mid-majors. Not buying them yet.

3 least impressive teams NW, Nebraska and Wisconsin. MInnesota and Purdue have all good losses. Rutgers kind of fits in that middle 5-10 range. December will arrange the standings more clearly for many teams.

As of today:

1. Michigan
2. OSU
3. Maryland
4. MSU
5. (TIE) Indiana, Illinois, PSU (yeah, I know this is a cop-out)
8. Iowa - I give them the nod over RU because they beat TTU
9. Rutgers
10. Purdue
11. Wisconsin
12. Minnesota
13. Nebraska
14. Northwestern

At the current time, I see Rutgers' ceiling being 8th, but I also think it will be a dog-fight, and we could finish as low as 11.

purdue is having a similar start to last season where they lose a bunch of close ones against a tough schedule.

Like most years Maryland has a lot of talent. Maybe even more this year. But, also like most recent years, they have Turgeon as their HC. He can recruit but has never impressed me with his in game coaching. The big question is can he coach this team with Final 4 talent to the Final 4?

You would fit in well on the Maryland message boards, ha ha...

I am going to go back to SFA game prediction thread....you better not have had them winning by only 3 or even losing.

Yeah, it really seems like "positionless" basketball means "rudderless and confusing" basketball.

Seriously, though, aside from the shooting woes, it really seems like guys are either confused by their roles or Pike hasn't properly SET their individual roles, and the result is just chaos on offense.

2 games later we are #9 in B1G and floor is 11th.

Sorry to point you out, but it is amazing that people can turn a complete 180 after beating 3 teams ranked betweein 180 and 220 at home.

SF Austin is not a 180-220 team, they may finish there with 3 Non D1 opponents and Southland conference schedule but they are better than any finishing ranking a computer says.

or with anybody that has watched a Maryland game the last 5 years. Turgeon has been just good enough to not get fired at a school with high hopes.

You’re pointing out comments I made in relation to a single game — in which we looked AWFUL — and comparing that to my current opinion after reviewing the entire sample size of games. Not a fair comparison.

Also, we looked like crap in the early games at home against worse competition, and we actually looked like a team in the more recent games. Opinions can and do change based on additional evidence.

I also cannot give much credence to early season “rankings”. Sorry, but SFA is not a sub 200 team.

The Big east can't be better than the Big. SHU is rated as the top BE team and the BIG today has Michigan, Ohio State, Maryland and Michigan State all in the Top 12 of the country and all rated ahead of SHU. Villanova is behind 5 BIG teams.

B1G is 7-4 against the Big East this year.
