Too Much Subbing

I think that the big time subbing was a smart idea when we were playing the cup cakes. Gives players that ordinarily wouldn't play, important game time experience.

But now that w are entering conference play (and of course Seton Hall) Coach needs to tighten up the rotation.

I heard that he talked about the season long fatigue affects that playing many players helps alleve. But you have to give more minutes to your best players. And 4 player subbing at one time, does not allow cohesion. It would be true if you had 12 equally talented players *(I would still not do it) but we definitely have a hierarchy of talent w our players.

In reference to the season long fatigue affects, my solution would be to not play all the lesser sub players every game. Give a & c some time in the next game and then give b & d some time in the following game.

I am very happy w coach. Was never happy day one w the hiring of Fast Eddie. You always have to worry when the news articles that introduce the new coach never mentioned his past win-lose records,,,which basically stunk.

As the announcers said..."the rotation/lack of cohesion is the price RU pays for such good D"

They LOVED how good our D was.......heaped praise on coach P and the team...

I have no issues with the substitutions. Coach demands max effort at all times. And wasn't it recently reported that the players have monitors? I think coach is doing a very good job keeping players fresh, especially the guards where we lack depth.

Hopefully Corey will recover fast because the guard depth will really take a hit if he misses time.

I like his subs. Last season we would be playing 6 and Jordan wouldn't bother to call timeout for rest. Huge improvement.

Fans watching this game saw far too many occasions where there were 3 or more players on the court who aren't offensive scoring threats. Its darn near impossible to win B1G games with the lack of scorers but that is what Pikiell has to deal with this season.Substitutions are made to keep players out of foul trouble, rest players to keep them fresh and replace those who aren't performing.Pikiell must do the juggling act because of the lack of talent .

In general, I agree you want players to spend some minutes on the court for continuity. Yesterday, the substitutions were being made by what Coach was seeing on the court. He kept trying different combinations trying to find something that worked. During our runs, he did not substitute.

subbing is basically a big reason we've won more games this year. our fans that lash out at anything and everything are hilarious. i couldnt name a definitive top 5 if i tried. everyone has had great games at different points in the season so far.

Pikiell's sub and rotation patterns have been quite good considering talent level and intensity requirements. I like the fact we can go almost 10 deep. While it may not make a difference this year in terms of dancing, once the talent level gets to NCAA tourney level it will make us a very dangerous team to go that deep while keeping up the defensive intensity for 40 minutes.

Couldn't disagree more here.

If a guy catches fire or a team is on a run that is 1 thing.

I wholeheartedly agree with your disagreement. ;)

Coach Pike has been quite good at a seamless rotation of players, which is much needed when talent is pretty comparable for the first 9 guys on the roster and coach wants a vigorous effort on offense and defense.

For the Wisconsin game, it seemed like a lot of substitutions but I saw this as Pike trying to make adjustments to find something that worked.

Guys get tired....they are subbed out.

Guys make bone head mistakes...they are subbed out.

Mix that in with a little matchup mingling due to the opposition or foul trouble...it's really that simple.

Pikiell wants 100 percent effort every play. Do that and you get tired. Don't and you make mistakes. People being better than you talent wise...can't control that just yet. But we should never be out hustled in the eyes of this coaching staff!

Would think that those second guessing our substitution patterns are exceptionally versed in basketball coaching, and also intimately familiar with the players on our roster. Would never dream of taking a side in this discussion, given the expertise on the part of the coaches and on the part of their critics.

Yeah, I can live with more frequent substitutions if it means more intense defense. Right now, our defense is our strength, and I think Pike is smart playing to our strength.

We're not going out-gun teams with explosive offense. Our big runs this year have been triggered by smothering defense. So frequent substitutions are a smart way to play to that defensive strength on an offensively challenged team.

We aren't going to beat anyone on talent. It's going to take max effort on the D end to win games at this level. That means lots of guys play, mostly because they seem to capable of doing it.

That and rebounding. It's ugly, but effective. Especially when that is all you have to work with.

I like the frequent subbing. It keeps guys engaged in the game. If they know they're number is going to be called, they will try harder in practice because of the game time reward. Also, as many have said, with the intensity required by the staff, need fresh bodies to throw out there. It can only help the development of the younger players.
