Top Freshman in B10 - Gavin @ #6

Ideally we'd be good at everything, yes, but having a coach that is a bit below average at offense and amazing at defense is still pretty good and combined with talent can result in a really good team.

I mean this is a huge exaggeration as usual.
'no exaggeration' hypothesis supported p <.00001 .

Anyone who is watching knows that we run a structured offense with plays on most possessions being called from the bench, almost exclusively from Pike. Not sure why, but every game the plays he calls have new names. In any given game there are at least 10 different plays that are called and are either a gesture or written on the white board.

This notion of we don't run an offense is complete hogwash.

unless the structure is ‘Derek, beat your guy and take a shot’, or the same concept for JWill, and others….no, there is no structure.

We never, and that’s no exaggeration, get open looks. We don’t create mismatches with ball movement forcing switches.

There is no structure at all. Three ball dominant guards hunting for shots is not structured offense.

Besides, plays are not the same thing as structure. Opening tip plays for Cliff alleyoops are plays but not structured offense, in case you don’t know …

Pointing to a few set plays in a game is not evidence of having a regular half court flow or flows.

Running plays is absolutely not the same thing as offense.

We have open looks every single game. Our shot quality is fairly bad, but not THAT bad, and can mostly be explained by the fact that we take too many midrange shots. Pretty much every three we brick is open.

We run an offense with rules for players. It is in on way disciplined. We don't miss a lot of open threes either. Nearly everyone in the league gets more open looks from three than us. Our over help defense is a big reason why.

Our help defense is the reason we don’t get open threes?

Not Emphasizing shooting doesn’t mean you can’t recruit guys who can shoot?
Let’s agree Pike emphasizes defense, I’m pretty sure he’d take what he considers an excellent defensive prospect who has a good history of shooting over one who can’t.
He took Chol who supposedly can shoot but can’t play the game didn’t he?
Reminds me of the schiano prefers quick but not big defensive lineman theories.

Also plays are literally offensive structure.
no. do yourself a favor and learn basketball. designing and executing a play, or several over the course of a half or a game is absolutely not the same thing as an offense.

A play is something specific in a matter of a few seconds and at most a pass or two, like an inbounds with 4 seconds left on a shot or game clock. As in the last play of the Nova title win.

An offense is a system of extended and designed ball movement and cuts probing for good shot opportunities. We absolutely do not do that.

Princeton’s regular offense is not of plays. Neither is Purdue’s or UConn’s. They are playing chess with extended ball movement yielding an eventual good look. It might take a sequence of 5 specific cuts and passes to beat the defense for good looks. We play checkers with players looking for their 1 on 1 shots when we pass half court, and yes maybe a play after a timeout or something specific and brief.

Very different things.
