"Whoever the next coach is, he needs to go and hire one of the best high school coaches in the state to come on his staff and he needs to hire one of the best AAU coaches in the state to be on his staff," Bright said. "That's his first two moves. He needs to hire, for example, (Linden High coach) Phil Colicchio. He needs to go see if he can get (St. Anthony coach) Bob Hurley. He needs to go see if he can get (Roselle Catholic coach) Dave Boff. Someone who understands what these high school kids are thinking, that's had to manage them."

Or we could have no relationship with them like Eddie Jordan did. That worked great.

Bright added the next coaching staff must do a better job on the recruiting trail. While he declined to denigrate Rutgers' recruiting efforts under Jordan, Bright said in-state rival Seton Hall has done a far better job establishing relationships with top programs, coaches and players.
"Not even close," Bright said. "Do I know (Seton Hall assistant coach) Shaheen Holloway? Sometimes I think Shaheen lives with me. Shaheen's there. I don't know a coach that does a better job of being there than Kevin Willard and Shaheen Holloway. That whole staff — those guys are in the street. They're at games, they're on the recruiting circuit, they're calling you. They do their homework. And it wasn't close."

I like the way Coach Ash handled a similar situation. He added that position "Director of HS Relationships" that Rick Mantz currently occupies. Our new basketball coach should probably add that position to the staff. In basketball, that person would be dealing with the AAU guys too. Actually, it would be a good idea at Rutgers for every sport to have a "Director of HS Relationships."

Ive been saying this for years

Ash was hired and immediately was talking to a gathering of high school coaches

has this EVER been done in hoops...does this school give a shit at all...they treat like its step child they want to avoid discussion. Jordan had to go because he wasnt selling the school the way it needed to be and appealing to NJ coaches and AAU

What those denigrating Hurley are missing is that Danny could be the guy to sell to these coaches, he knows the area and he knows the pitfalls. Danny isnt Fred Hill who coudnt coach himself out of a paper bag and wasnt meant to be a head man, nor Kevin Bannon with off court issues, nor Mike Rice who couldnt keep his temper under control. Danny provides that chance. If this rebuild is going to happen, we need NJ all in...Danny provides the best shot at that no matter what people try to say about his record. And as for being polarizing, I asked Carino that and he said that is totally overblown. Pretty much every NJ mediaguy who deals with all of these high school coaches and know the college landscape in NJ feels Danny is a slamdunk hire. If its not going to be Herb, it needs to be Danny

Danny's the guy. Now can we close.

Or, Sendek/whomever is the guy, but he brings in a recruiting staff like the one this guy describes, which makes a lot of sense IMHO.

I seriously fear a staff full of RU-retreads.

Frankly, it's all BS. Yes, we need to have better relationships with AAU & NJ HS coaches, but it isn't like they were sending us their elite 5*s when we did with FHJ & others in the past. Until we get a coach that wins or has strong name recognition & build the basketball facilty, it's very unlikely these handlers will change their attitudes towards us, even if we live with them too.

AAU guys always looking for a connection somewhere.....I've got more people that are not thrilled with Hurley than are OK with Hurley....if we are hiring based on a premise that the borders of NJ are somehow going to be closed, good luck with that......I won't comment about the SHU stuff, wake me when they actually gain consistent recruiting results in state....that hasn't happened in a quite a while...being visible or at each games, doesn't close your deal when it comes to recruiting these days.

Pass on Hurley. We can do better.

AAU coaches will fall in line as long as the coach can navigate that cesspool. Any successful coach in the country understands that. Hurley isn't unique. If he was, RI would have a bunch of studs on the team.

Same with Seton Hall. All that work and they still get killed in their own state.

Get a true accomplished professional, like Ash.

Most of these HS guys have assistants get them players. Is Boff responsible for the talent or does he have a system in place where he's the coach and others recruit? Also Linden HC won't work under another HC. He's s HC through and through.

They are a top 25 team next year - that means they have good players.

He's got a kid from St Pats coming next year

There are MAAC schools out recruiting Rutgers. That is a very low bar to cross and certainly shouldn't be used as a measuring stick for hire.

Hurley is mom and pop.

The next coach just needs to hire the father of the top prospect in the country, just like Kansas did by hiring Danny Manning's dad way back when.

Bright talked up Seton Hall but how many Jersey kids do they have on the roster connected to Sports U?

Sanogo?

Powell, the 2016 recruit, is Jimmy Salmons.

Carrington, Desi, Whitehead and Delgado were tied to NYC dealers.

Interesting.....because, Phil Colicchio tweeted that Rutgers should think outside the box and go after Kevin Boyle.

We have heard all this before. How about sending us a player or 2 before lecturing the BB program. I get what the aau guy is saying, but lets make it a relationship that goes both ways.

Just as every basketball thread got turned into a "fire Eddie Jordan" thread, now every thread is turned into a "hire Danny Hurley" thread.

Hire Danny Hurley
"fire Eddie Jordan" ( again) [winking]

how about Rutgers invest in hoops for once...the AAU coaches and high schools coaches laugh at this schools committment, why send kids when the school has pissed on the program for so long..cannot dispute that

By "invest in hoops" do you mean pay tribute to the AAU goons who may eventually throw us a bone?

I think he is referring to the work being done on the current soph HS class, NAZ Reid et al. We don't have many ships till then. (BTW we got A verbal from the rivals #81 today, a 2G from DE)
