FB Recruiting Transfer QB Athan Kaliakmanis visiting RU

On the average, yes. There is some cause for hope, however, in that his performance was up/down, but was trending towards improvement.

Let's go game by game, but by %completion, and do average not by # of total passes by game.

Common Opponents (NW, UM, WIS,Iowa, OSU, MSU):
Gavin- 47%
Athan- 54.2.%

Slight edge to Athan.
Troubling that each QB did worse in second half of season.
2nd half at least for us was much tougher comp

This is exciting news. Would be the perfect kid to bring in to challenge Gavin. Someone who played for Kirk and now has a full year as a starter under his belt. A kid who obviously wants to play in Kirk’s system. Let’s seal the deal here.

But he's... maybe marginally a better passer than Gavin but doesn't run like Gavin at all. Would he really be a more effective QB?

Even their QBRs are identical, Athan 80th and Gavin 81st.

The blended numbers don’t tell the whole story. This kid had 2 inaccurate games in 2023 where he was asked to throw a ton - Purdue and UNC. I’m not saying those games “don’t matter” but it’s still the case that Minny’s completion rate in the other 10 games where he was the QB was 57% or so. 10 games seems more representative of the norm than 2.

You can’t do the same thing with Gavin because he was inaccurate every game. He only threw better than 53% 3 times on the season (and one was against Wagner).

Rutgers has 1 other QB on the roster, Sheppard, who pass twice this year other than Winsatt. I believe most coaches want someone as backup that played a few plays in college.

Some on the board say that Schiano just wants to run, run, run. I think that Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan are run first teams and pass when necessary. Clemson, Louisville and Oregon are pass first team. They all want the best QB. Many of the Ohio State game, they start passing when the run game doesn’t work but you still want the best QB. You think Schiano doesn’t see what 90% of the board see? We need a competent back up and some competition.

Yes but we’re not bringing in Minnesota’s starting QB with a plan to lock him in as Gavin’s back up. He’s going to compete for the starting role if he comes to RU.

The question is NIL? I don’t think we need one since on paper a little better than Winsatt. He thinks he going to be the starter base on Winsatt performance.

This has been brought up on the podcast but how exactly is the visit going to work?

Will they just hide this kid from Gavin the entire visit?
How does having your hopeful replacement visit during practice work?

Just tell Gavin we need an experienced backup and when he comes, he wins the starting role. No one is guaranteed the starting position.

This kid will cost zero dollars. This fanbase is hilarious it wants a quality established college QB but will ignore NIL completely. You very busy men spent a week taking about the Ohio State QB possibly coming home knowing full well our pathetic NIL situation. This Minnesota kid is the type of kid your getting when you choose to ignore to help like how the Nebraska’s of the worlds fanbase participates.

The problem with our fan base vs the old established football powerhouse is that they have older fans, 55-85 years old, that have experienced being national champs when they were younger. They now have money and they want that old feeling of having a winning football team. Our fans, at best, me including, got excited when Schiano got us to 8-9 wins. Not the same as National Championship. I think this QB will be enough to win 6-7 wins next year.

I’m not a very busy person!

STFU already, you twit. How the F did Rutgers hold onto the entire defense (except Max, and Dixon pending) and also get Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper for hoops. You have no clue what you are yammering on about. You are a broken record who does more harm than good with your constant browbeating of "the fanbase." Shut up and sit down. You have no idea what our NIL situation is. You are just a troublemaker. Twit.

Call @gef21 --thoughts?
Can our receivers or TEs run slants like the Minnesota receivers?
He is a solid QB but not elite. He can run but is not as big a running threat as GW. I like his ability to step into contact throws and not elevate his shoulder (meaning he is accurate with contact in his face). He had better WRs than we did and they elevated his play at times. He does check down and scans the field well. His play fakes are good and he has good pocket sense. He was sacked 7 more times than GW, which I would assume means he was also rushed more, which could explain the extra INTs.

I watched Dino's high school highlight film. He has good acceleration but not elite top end speed. He is physical inside and finds windows well. Competition against him did not look phenomenal. Makes big catches down the field but can not accelerate away from defenders. Lots of yards, lots of catches, not a lot of TDs.

He is sitting at the 6 foot 2 200 plus pound range. I could see him filling a roll as an inside route running guy in place of a TE.

I do not think it would be a bad get to get them both, do not think either are going to come and light the world on fire.

What is kind of interesting is OC KC's year 1, 2, 3 mantra.
Both Gavin and Athan will be in year 2 of his program. Athan had a year under someone else this past year. Not super excited about this should he commit, but experienced depth is always needed.

Wow so mad old man? If the mods followed their own rules you would be banned on a daily basis. I know the rules 100% it’s why we won’t be grabbing any of the QB’s that can come here and start day one. Any QB worth a dime k les that the starting job here is there’s for the licking unless Gavin improves dramatically. We have guys like you that think they are someone when you are just like the rest of us another no body. So please Mr I can’t give a dime because I’m tapped out on Rutgers R. Go take a nap or get ready for the 430 dinner special at the diner. It’s an anonymous message board go start your boring and old Haiku thread lol.

Installation is in levels. If you look at what KC does it all looks similar on the line, from the WRs from a QB and RB action standpoint but it begins to add in layers so that deception catches people off guard.

I am hoping with a stronger WR room next year we will see more RPOs and I really hope we see a true TE emerge that will allow us to run the level concepts KC loves to implement.

He's not coming to Rutgers for depth, if he commits he's QB1 next year easily.
With the departure of Evan Simon it was a foregone conclusion Rutgers had a need for another QB. This player is a good addition if he does come here. Pretty bold statement by you to anoint him QB1 from day one Richard…While on the recent podcast with Mike and Craig you all seemed to be stunned that we were not perusing a transfer QB. It will make for an interesting and somewhat typical Rutgers QB controversy in the spring or summer. We don’t need a repeat of 2022 where we had multiple injuries at the position. Watch how if he signs on the number of posts which question his ability and Gavin Wimsatt and Sheppard staying . Don’t forget AJ Surace who some here had already penciled in as the “ guy”. Need good to great QB play if we are to actually see a better than competitive squad in 2024.

this here is a powerade segment on this player

I don't know how much of this is typical training for a college qb.....at minimum, makes him appear to be serious in his work

sorry if already posted in here somewhere

When I first saw the news that he was taking a visit here, I shirked in horror. Ok, not really. But, there has been a lot of blame this kid has taken this year for a rather imperfect Minnesota offense (from their fanbase, from the media, etc.). Maybe, if you transplanted one piece of that offense (the QB) here, the result might be altogether different. And, I'm sure, that's what the coaching staff is thinking. Besides, wasn't Minnesota's OL banged-up this season? Injuries, schemes, etc. could all be contributing factors to less-than-stellar stats.

That said -- I would've thought that the coaching staff might've looked at a more impressive portal guy (if not a P5 QB, than perhaps a G5 or even an FCS QB) -- someone who really jumps off the page with their athleticism. It seems, as many have mentioned here, this is more of a solid, experienced, "game-manager"-type.

Who are the top lickers in this competition?

I don't have a premium subscription so can't initiate a DM.

But anyone who does, send me a message for a pretty funny joke that I don't think I can post here.

this is typical for any QB from about 6th grade and up. You have 2nd graders paying QB trainers 100 bucks an hour for group training

If there is any chance of Gavin leaving why go after a scrub or someone who appears to be just like Gavin. There seems to be so many QB’s in the portal who have had success. Oh I know why!!!
